I'll assume you've read Leviathan.
The US Constitution was designed to protect natural rights. One of those rights, an inalienable one, is the right to pursue happiness. IE one's right to sovereign property.
Government health-insurance is a violation of that inalienable right, as it is redistributing wealth, and is thus always unjust.
If you want to create a socialistic state repeal the Constitution first. If you don't, you have no respect for the law and we'll all drink Hemlock.
If you think govt. taxation in exchange for a public service which is not being effectively delivered by the private sector is an example of socialism, then the United States has been a socialist state since 1790. Deal with it.
If you think nominal redistribution of wealth is a violation of the natural rights of man, then you can go and watch Thomas Paine and Thomas Hobbes have a debate about it in the Twilight Zone. But the rest of us have to live in the real world.
I'm a little confused as to how our health system is broken. In the last twenty 1 year heart attack survival is up 80%; breast cancer survival has doubled; life expectancy is up 5 years.
Are you referring to the fact that 10% of our population is uninsured as a failure? 65% of those are 18-24.
If you want to increase coverage why not reduce cost by taking down the legal barriers to entry? Adding a monstrous bureaucracy will only increase cost.
I didn't say the health system is broken, just the HMO system. All the other developed countries provide universal coverage, with equivalent or better health outcomes at less than 10% of GDP, while the U.S.A. spends 17% GDP on healthcare while leaving millions without coverage.
Define what you mean by a 'legal barrier to entry.'
We spend 17% because, one, we eat much more than any other country (because we're rich) and, two, each person receives the best possible medical treatment. We have the best doctors and the most innovative tech, that's not cheap.
Do you ever wonder how single insurance companies are able to gain huge market shares? 80% in some states. It's because they lobby for tough licensing procedures. If we could buy across state lines they would lose their monopoly power and their monopoly pricing.
Sorry, but if you think "each person receives the best possible medical treatment" in the United States, you're in denial.
No I don't wonder how HMOs are able to gain near monopolies in individual states. It's common knowledge.
1. Other than baseball, HMOs are the only industry exempt from anti-trust/anti-monopoly laws.
2. Smaller states don't have a large enough client pool to enable efficient competition. Even the "sell insurance across state lines" talking point recognizes this.
America is the front line of med innovation, the majority of med innovation comes from the US. That means US citizens receive the newest & therefore the most expensive medical treatment
Both of your arguments are retarded. If you let anyone buy insurance from wherever all of those legislated monopolies will disappear overnight. The shortages & profit from pricing MC=MR will be gone
I'd say that's a better solution than politicizing health-insurance -- vote 4 me, I'll cover whatever ales you!
Contrary to talking points, the majority of inovation does not come from the United States. Six of the ten largest Biotech/Pharma companies (Novartis, Bayer, GlaxoSmithKline, Sanofi-Aventis, Hoffman-LaRoche and Astra Zeneca) are in Europe, where they have universal health care.
Maybe you can tell me where Insulin, pasturization, ASA, antibiotics, heart transplants, heart stints, and X-rays were invented?
Although, there's no question, the U.S. has some of the most EXPENSIVE procedures.
1) Over 65% of world-wide medical research is conducted in the US. That doesn't include pharma, which is significantly more (cite Folland's econ of healthcare *my textbook)
2) There are many forms of barriers to entry: government regulation (legal barriers); start-up capital requirements (high fixed costs); consumer beliefs (product loyalty, unwillingness to change, etc). Please, watch the videos.
1. By what mesure? Expenditure on research, or innovation? There's no doubt that more than 65% of the patents are filed in the US patent office, but most of them are ornamental. You'll have to show that more INNOVATION takes place under the U.S. system to make your case.
2. When I asked you to define what you meant by 'legal barriers to entry' you COULD have said any one of those things, but instead you just decided to show off your Tourette Syndrome. A sign of a very weak argument.
3. The proposed bill allows for purchase across state lines by setting up a national health care insurance exchange, just like the one federal employees use. Thus allowing across-state-line purchasing that doesn't violate state laws. The bill also allows for inter-state compacts, which is what the GOP has been whining for.
4. By 'licensing procedures' I presume you're talking about 'Mary Ruwart style' complaints about licensing of physicians.? That's a separate issue.
