at 06:06 he's like: "hell yeah! it's freakin hard to play, but why even look at my fingers? what's the conductor doing?" :D awesome pianist, his playing is outstanding!
Happy Birthday Fabio Luisi. You're the best conductor ever. Hope you have more life and blessings to come in Life. Nodame cantabile is awesome and keep conducting maestro! <3
I was just looking around on youtube and then randomly found Nelson Goerner playing this on the first video I clicked on! ...Funnily enough last week he gave me a lesson on this movement :D:D:D:D:D I was amazed at how awesome he was able to play and what he told me! Ha! Out of 122 THOUSAND people - I got a lesson with him!!! ;) Plus aside from his piano playing he's a good guy! :D
@JohnnyRedzin - if you are REALLY 'Old School' you must watch 'Brief Encounter' starring Trevor Howard - a black & white romantic tear-jerker that even brought tears to my glass eye!
It features this music as it's sound-track - well worth a watch + you can see clips on You Tube. Have your hankie ready. Enjoy!
That show really gave me a jump start into classical music. I was into Neo-classical shred before watching the show so i guess this was only a natural progression.
Play them as huge arpeggios or one hand arpeggio + right hand chord. I must train playing with arpeggios, because I can reach these notes, but there's problem with good dynamics.
@MariusChamberlin Yeahh, Nodame Cantabile has the best soundtrack of all time, but is because that anime uses the music of the greatest masters of music.
I have never seen someone look at the conductor so much. Usually the conductor is following the pianist during a concerto arent they? Lovely interpretation though!
@FunInUtah do yourself a favor and talk to musicians 2 better understand what's going. you'll get more enjoyment and won't be distracted by worrying about who's looking at whom? how much/when they look at each other is unique to each situation. each 'team' works out its own way of communicating. maybe they never played together and the pianist is learning the movements of the conductor. or vice a versa. in spite of this, you have very good taste as this really is a fine performance.
5:53 - 6:03 is rachmaninoff is rachmaninoff becoming ever closer to coming out of his depression, and then at 6:03 he conquers is and comes back with full force. That's just how interpret that section (listen and judge for youself, would love to hear everyones thoughts)
@LoftyProduction one finds whatever meaning he wants in music...when i hear this amazing piece i think of beautiful natural disasters (such as an avalanche or a volcanic eruption)...the sheer force of this concerto is comparable with the force of nature...monumental.
Man,I'm just in love with this. This may be the only or one of the very few things Rachmaninoff is famous with, but it can be put in the top 5 best piano concerts and classical compositions ever!
Nelson Goerner - a pianist of phenomenal technique, and the utmost humility and integrity. I shall never forget seeing him in recital in 07 or so...I bawled my eyes out afterwards. Would love to see him in concert again!

imoimo19891010, thank you for this vid. It's the best I've ever heard my favorite movement of my favorite piano concerto. Love it! Fabio Luisi, NHK Symphony and Nelson Goerner, no wonder.
@flawlessly personally, I'd say it's too fast, and the piano drowns out the strings too much in this movement. Karajan had the best version, but it got removed D:
@CheesePhoenix ABSOLUTELY AGREE! Cheesephoenix.. I unfortunately had to hear the Karajan version first before any other ones and the difference for me in Passion and Musicianship from Karajan to other versions is night and day!
@CheesePhoenix I think I prefer a faster version coz it makes the melody itself more powerful and overwhelming. But i guess it's a matter of personal taste. Karajan version was good, too (Karajan is always good, hehe). Shouldn't have been removed! =(
