  • Personally, l think Hold Your Fire was their best album. They hit their peak, and aside from Roll the Bones, nothing they've done since compares to their earlier work. I love Rush. They are my favorite band. I just am not happy with their later stuff.

  • this is one of the most inspiring songs i have ever heard. This song in combination with reading the talent code and outliers really made me pushing myself in life and in drumming. If you could please watch my video that uses this song, i promise you wont be disappointed.

  • Hold Your Fire is a magnificent album. If you think that it suffers in comparison with the preceding albums of the late seventies or early eighties then you're looking at it the wrong way. It stands apart in itself (like all the other albums) as a statement of a certain time - in this case, 1987. just enjoy the album for what it is without comparing it with what went before and after.

  • This is probably one of rush's best basslines! I cannot comprehend how Geddy can sing while playing it

  • it's eerie how precise neil was back then

  • @shed412: So he's less precise now?

  • hopefully they'll play this song next tour, it would've been awesome!

  • I loved "Hold Your Fire". Has some of my all time favourite Rush tracks.

  • @therealficolley the only thing "bad" about Hold Your Fire is that people didnt respect the songs other than "Time Stand Still" "MIssion" and "Force Ten" personally i think its good but i like the syth sound better (IMO)

  • have they played this song on any later tours? Id love to hear it on their next tour.

  • @sayyes1100 Not since the HYF tour, unfortunately. I'd love to see the band omit Time Stand Still and blow the dust off of this tune. It would sound GREAT with how the band has been clicking the past few tours.

  • the best bassline ever..

  • I could not have survived the last four decades without Rush.

  • @barnabas50 Neither could I have my friend. Nothing more needs be said.

  • @superunt43 everytime a new rush album then cd's would come out i got really excited when i got my hands on it and started listening and learning all the songs.

  • Rush, 3 Wise Men.

  • Alternating currents force a show of hands!

  • This sound quality is a lot better than the actual Show Of Hands DVD, that's for sure. Possibly the old laserdisc? Hmm.

  • Why did I have to be born after all Rush's good stuff was made. And then they torture young fans like me with the Time Machine Tour. I would kill to have a

G-Filter and I would go back to when they were performing in the Church basement. Who knows maybe my future me was in that basement, and in this crowd

  • Aristolte Rocks!

  • killer bass and great band always

  • @Eternityflows I listen to all those albums daily. So badass.

  • A wal bass

  • what kind of bass is he using?

    That punchy tone, wow!

  • @CircusEnvy23 The bass used by Geddy in the late 80's was a Wal. The company made high end basses similar in quality to Alembic. The company folded in the late 90's I think.

  • Comment removed

  • @sysrq120 Tried to be commercial? WTF? What happened was Geddy got into synthesizers big time.

  • US 187+ vs them 0

  • 1:35 - 1:43 blurrr blurrr blurrrrr, freakin' sweet bass blurrrrrr!!!

  • A lot of people will say Rush took a shit in the 80's, but I have to highly disagree. I personally think their prime was in the 80s. I've seen these guys live 3 times now since 2007 and their latest tour (Time Machine) was absolutely stunning. When they played "Marathon" live, I lost it. I was in complete euphoria.

  • They are the best!!!!

  • I was born in 94, i'm days from turning 17. I hate the fact that i missed so much rush. My first Rush concert was on the Time Machine tour. I wish they would play more of these old songs that the new fans haven't seen or the older fans haven't seen in a long time. But i might just be wishing too much lol

  • @RushRules4 You're lucky to have even seen them. Also born in 94, the closest they've been to my hometown is 100 miles. And with no license or anything I'm fucked.

  • @RushRules4 I'm only 15, but I know what you mean. Seeing Rush for the first time on June 10 in New Orleans. I like their new songs, though, especially songs like Earthshine, Far Cry, Faithless and Workin' Them Angels (not to mention BU2B and Caravan are GREAT)

  • @RushRules4 We have very similar names, my friend.

  • i feel like behind that keyboard bank, Geddy is "in his office"

  • This song makes so much sense to me....

  • I still find it amazing how a "band" like Slipknot can find peace with having 8 members in the band....RUSH clearly shows 3 is all it takes to make a MONSTROUS sound!!

  • one of my absolute favorite songs by these guys.

  • I almost wish I was a 70s kid so I could have seen Rush play like this live.

  • This song along with other great Rush songs are the reasons why Geddy Lee is my favorite Bassist just true talent and never overdoes it.

  • "Prime Mover" is probably in my Top 10 fav Rush songs. It has that wonderful 80s Rush sound of being a little rock, a little techno, and with those wonderful cryptic lyrics that seem to suggest life, relationships, and science.

It also has the impression of being distinctly "Rush" in sound. The structure and style is unlike anybody else.

  • Pearl God of Drums , the best , the Magical hands and feets , The BATERISTA............

  • RIGHT LET'S STOP MESSING ABOUT!!

Try playing Lee's bass lines (and singing) simultaneously, Lifeson's guitar riffs/arpeggios and solos, and finally Peart's syncopated drum rhythms. None of the above is easy to perform.

The "musicians" in many of the so-called bands of today would be completely and utterly out of their depth i.e. bands like say McFly or U2. Rush's complicated awesome music could well be described as being on a "timeless wavelength"!!

    Does anyone else agree?

  • @ecapa0020 Not really, but thanks for asking.

  • @ecapa0020 Agree y friend. Totally!

  • Rush = the reason why I consider all Canadians my friends

  • it is so hard to play the bass like him and sing along with that

Those bass lines are hard to catch with another voice patterns

geddy has that talent like anybody else

  • cracks :D

  • This song is about life. It's not arriving - it is the journey!

  • They should play this song in their concerts :)

  • sometimes hold your fire is a little bit underated, it has great songs like force ten, mission, prime mover, time stand still and lock and key, it deserves more recognition

  • @xXmartinoliXx

I agree. It's my favorite Rush studio album. The problem with HYF, though, is that almost all of the songs sound incredibly better when performed live.

Some are equally good on HYF and ASOH...but in particular, the studio versions of "Mission" and "Turn The Page" are very weak.

  • Absolutely love this song, and it sounds brilliant live.

  • AWESOME! Fan since 77

  • freaking awesome lyrics :D

  • One of the best songs on Hold Your Fire. Kicks major butt.

  • i think alex should really bring back the signature. its a beautiful guitar.

  • Is it me or do Rush's songs sound so much more better live :)?

  • @MegaCrusher99 nah its their god like talent

  • This wasn't on the cassette version of the live album. Should've been. This kicks ass!

  • @ZoahLord this isn't the only song left off of a cassette from a live album in the 80s. Ministry's "Stigmata" was left off the cassette of "In case you didn't feel like showing up live!" I hooked my VHS player up to my cassette deck and copied the VHS off onto tape! Got the whole damn thing! hahahaHA!

  • from the point of ignition to the final drive

the point of a journey, is not to arrive!

  • why do people hate on Hold Your Fire? its one of my favorite Rush albums, and this is one of my favorite songs EVER. I am proud to be a Rush fan.

  • @TheCityOfKingsALC Don't know why....HYF is one of my favs......Prime mover being my fav on that album along with Force 10. Long live Rush

  • This song is absolutely brilliant. I learned this bass line and it was a b***h to get the right feel and intonation for this song. Geddy is extremely tough to emulate. This is also a very fun song on drums. I absolutely love the punch Neil's toms put out on this kit. I would kill to get that exact sound.

I really hope we get this gem on the Time Machine Tour!!!!!!!!! October can't get here fast enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @cygnus434 my friend called me from new mexico and held the phone up so i could listen

  • did they play any songs from signals in this tour?

  • FABULOUS - cant wait for the new album "Clockwork Angels"! brilliant band

  • From the point of Conception to the Moment of Truth.

    ... beautiful.

  • anything can happen

  • And I thought the album version was good, this is frickin brilliant!!!

  • Beautiful (enougth said?)

  • Just picked up the HYF album on CD. Love it -- especially this song. "Tai Shan" is beautiful, and the closing track ("High Water") is fantastic. I love how Rush can take complex intellectual topics and create great rock out of it.

  • I want that drumkit...

  • @fassaalbrecht hey have you seen the drum kit for snakes and arrows? if you like this one you'll love the snakes and arrows one.

  • I saw the HYF tour 3 different times in '87...Dallas, Little Rock, Memphis. Geddy kills this song live... As with everything this band does, their songs are better live and they don't scrimp on anything....

  • I agree with everyone who's posted a comment. This song NEEDS to be on the next tour. It will be my first Rush concert, i want to hear my fav song from my fav band!!

  • My lil white got abused during this time. I had blow into it a couple of times a day just so I can get to this last song.

  • their songs sure were a lot more optimistic back in the day...

  • @jcfbell3001 The deaths of a wife and child can do a lot to curb your optimism, i think.

  • I can't get enough of Lee's bassline & tone on this song, not to mention the fact that I can't conceive of how he can play such complex lines and sing simultaneously. All three of these guys are just absurdly talented.

  • I just love seeing other RUSH fans say how they feel about them. Long live this perfect trio we call RUSH

  • one of the best songs on hold your fire

  • This song is a perfect example of why Rush are gods. Everything is perfect - the guitar, the bass (Geddy armed with that Wal bass = awesomeness embodied!), the synths, the drums and the mind-blowing lyrics. HYF is probably Rush's creative peak, and it is definitely my fave Rush album. This song is my second favourite after Emotion Detector.

Please guys, dig this out of the vault and play it next tour!

  • HYF is criminally underrated. And if "anything can happen", let's see this on the next tour, guys!

  • I agree wholeheartedly. HYF is one of their best records, hands down. On my top 5, it's right below "Vapor Trails" and "Moving Pictures".

  • Fuckin' underrated album!! ALL RUSH ALBUMS ROCKS!!!

  • This song is a perfect example how Rush's music picks me up and whisks me away to sum higher way of feeling.Mentally & spiritually. There has been times that Rush has brought me to tears of joy. Bless this Band.

  • I has A Show of Hands on viny.l

  • I bought this on VHS and wore out that one and had to buy another!!! This is an exceptional live production from a beyond exceptional band!!!

    "the point of departure

    is not to return"

  • The song that made the name for the live album.Anything can happen.:)

  • I wish this had been on the vinyl and not just the DVD. It sounds stunning!

  • Man, I love the bass in this song.

  • The point of departure is not to return! Anything can happen! ANYTHING! :D

  • From the point of conception

    To the moment of truth

    At the point of surrender

    To the burden of proof!

    From the point of ignition

    To the final drive

The point of the journey is not to arrive

    Anything can happen!

  • One of my favourites...i HOPE they will play this on the next tour!!!! :-o

  • My favorite Rush song. And the first Tour I ever saw live.

  • If I could own Alex's rig / guitars from the Hold Your Fire tour, I would be in heaven.

  • If you buy A Show of Hands of iTunes, there are songs that are not on the list here.

  • Why do you say this? on the italian iTunes store they are exactly the same tracks....

  • Yeah same for exit stage left. For the live albums they combine songs from a bunch of their shows, not just one.

  • ha. this is one of my faves of all time, and i have all of their studio albums :)

  • this music is so powerful. just pure power. god bless rush, the greatest band ever to be assembled.

  • I agree.........pure power!

  • NEIL PEART, ALEX LIFESON, GEDDY LEE=RUSH!! and i just love it!

  • Comment removed

  • Just WATCH Alex!

    He F***N LOVES this song!

I know exactly how he feels.

    AWESOME!

  • My fave rush tune. Cant stop listening to it!

    GOD LEE

  • i cant stop listening to this song!

  • if you dont like rush then FUCK YOU !!!!!

  • @newworldman123... k`mon men..

    be polite..diplomacie.. ( rush style )..

    said something like..

    if dont like rush..

    just keep listen to them..

    give youselft sometime ..

they are hard to digest at the beginnig..

then you will get fricking adicctive to their music "

    LOL..

  • @rickysalas2113307243 Amen to that!

  • @newworldman123 I know right? I can't understand people that DON'T like Rush. If you hate Rush, you are not human. Or alive.

  • @newworldman123

Some creeps would argue that you are too blunt and too rude and insulting. However, the truth is direct and very simple. Thanks for preaching brother.

  • greatness

  • Well ,if that isn't one of the most boneheaded comments I've ever read.

  • It´s called progressive rock. And I love it.

  • rush is progressive rock, thats what progressive rock is u idiot. go listen to ur stupid rap music or something, let us rush fans enjoy the music without all ur comments.

  • Love this song!

  • geddy lee has a good sound ... hes been playing since hes like 10 years old hes like 55 ... this is why he is a bass god !!

rush is the best canadien band ... im proud to be canadien !

  • if you're so proud, you should learn to spell it right.

  • What bass did Geddy have here?

    Awsome sound!

  • thats a wal bass. inthescissor

  • That's what I thought. Thanks

  • MUSIC...that...makes..u..think!

    stirs...the...imagination

    --

    "LIVE...FREE...OR...DIE"

  • anything CAN happen

ur happy one min then dull the next

or crossing a road then in a flash a oncoming vehicle hits you

  • I love all the plays on words in this song. I can't even begin to figure out how many different levels of meaning there are (not to mention the meaning of the song at all). Peart is a brilliant lyricist, not to mention the best drummer in rock. And the music to this song is awesome.

  • I really agree! :D

  • A M A Z I N G ! ! Rush rules!!

  • amazing musicianship.

  • I love Geddy's voice in their 80's material

  • GOD LEE!!!!

  • This is one of the few songs out of their Signals-Hold Your Fire era where Geddy isn't behind the keys. I'm suprised that they haven't used this on tour since the HYF Tour...

  • Geddy Lee is just UNBELIVEBLE

    God Lee

  • Just superb!

  • these mofos are multi CULT u aural !(yugoslav, polish and limey ) strange but true! but all canadian nonetheless

  • If anybody wants a great, fun rock and roll song, I'd point them to this song, live.

  • this made me re-realize how great hold your fire is...i kinda let that album slip to the back of the shelf for a few years

  • I never tire of Rush, and having seen them live over the years they continue to Rock Love this track

  • RUSH is imbued with the power of the gods.

  • man I love this song...

    "Anything can happen!!!"

  • what a killer song.

  • I love the bassline in this song, Geddy is awesome!

  • HYF ,, GUP >. Dark Horses for Rush's Catalog for Sure!! Prime Mover is a classic "DEEP CUT " from Rush 80s stuff .. Open Secrets is one of my favorite GEMS too! :-)) That solo/instrumental part in particularly unforgetable!

  • Prime Mover should have been on the Chronicles album.

  • I agree jlsmsu . I believe Chronicles was one of those Best of Albums the Record Company put out without really consulting the boys. I think thats why they put out those 2 "Rush Retrospective" cds that one time because Rush felt that Chronicles didn't cover the scope of their career thoroughly. I still like Chronicles as a back up but yeah it's an incomplete picture of the Rush catalog.

  • Which bass is Geddy playing here?

  • Wal bass

  • thanx gozac123, Wal bass sounds very unique.

  • yup it has very very tiny frets

  • HYF is way awesome. I think Geddy's best singing is on this album! It's just so great!

  • Agreed x10!!

  • Geddy singing is always great on every album and beyond

  • Absolute Greatness!! Beautiful.

  • If anyone can remind one why we are here at all, Rush comes closest.

  • Hold Your Fire is Rush's best album IMHO.

  • slurs the schwinging

  • I have the Hold Your Fire LP.

  • God, I wish they would play this on the 08' tour. Lets be honest we wish they could play everything. For the first time listeners to this song and rush in general, the sound on Youtube does not do them justice. GO an get the DVD and a good sound system! RUSH=Gods.

  • they really need to bring this song back.

  • I agree. This song is just so cool it would have been a welcome addition.

  • I say put this in place for dreamline or one little victory

  • Yes -- it would be ***amazing**** to hear them pull Prime Mover out of the vault!

  • I'll take anything from Power Windows or Hold Your Fire. Specifically, this or Marathon. That would be incredible.

  • Marathon -- best Rush song ever, IMO! If they played this again, oh, baby...

  • Comment removed

  • activates the lantern's candles

  • anything can happen...

  • Memo to Alex, Geddy, Neil...drop The Way The Wind Blows from your set list and play this forgotten gem please.
