Personally, l think Hold Your Fire was their best album. They hit their peak, and aside from Roll the Bones, nothing they've done since compares to their earlier work. I love Rush. They are my favorite band. I just am not happy with their later stuff.
this is one of the most inspiring songs i have ever heard. This song in combination with reading the talent code and outliers really made me pushing myself in life and in drumming. If you could please watch my video that uses this song, i promise you wont be disappointed.
Hold Your Fire is a magnificent album. If you think that it suffers in comparison with the preceding albums of the late seventies or early eighties then you're looking at it the wrong way. It stands apart in itself (like all the other albums) as a statement of a certain time - in this case, 1987. just enjoy the album for what it is without comparing it with what went before and after.
@therealficolley the only thing "bad" about Hold Your Fire is that people didnt respect the songs other than "Time Stand Still" "MIssion" and "Force Ten" personally i think its good but i like the syth sound better (IMO)
@sayyes1100 Not since the HYF tour, unfortunately. I'd love to see the band omit Time Stand Still and blow the dust off of this tune. It would sound GREAT with how the band has been clicking the past few tours.
@superunt43 everytime a new rush album then cd's would come out i got really excited when i got my hands on it and started listening and learning all the songs.
Why did I have to be born after all Rush's good stuff was made. And then they torture young fans like me with the Time Machine Tour. I would kill to have a
G-Filter and I would go back to when they were performing in the Church basement. Who knows maybe my future me was in that basement, and in this crowd
@CircusEnvy23 The bass used by Geddy in the late 80's was a Wal. The company made high end basses similar in quality to Alembic. The company folded in the late 90's I think.
A lot of people will say Rush took a shit in the 80's, but I have to highly disagree. I personally think their prime was in the 80s. I've seen these guys live 3 times now since 2007 and their latest tour (Time Machine) was absolutely stunning. When they played "Marathon" live, I lost it. I was in complete euphoria.
I was born in 94, i'm days from turning 17. I hate the fact that i missed so much rush. My first Rush concert was on the Time Machine tour. I wish they would play more of these old songs that the new fans haven't seen or the older fans haven't seen in a long time. But i might just be wishing too much lol
@RushRules4 You're lucky to have even seen them. Also born in 94, the closest they've been to my hometown is 100 miles. And with no license or anything I'm fucked.
@RushRules4 I'm only 15, but I know what you mean. Seeing Rush for the first time on June 10 in New Orleans. I like their new songs, though, especially songs like Earthshine, Far Cry, Faithless and Workin' Them Angels (not to mention BU2B and Caravan are GREAT)
I still find it amazing how a "band" like Slipknot can find peace with having 8 members in the band....RUSH clearly shows 3 is all it takes to make a MONSTROUS sound!!
"Prime Mover" is probably in my Top 10 fav Rush songs. It has that wonderful 80s Rush sound of being a little rock, a little techno, and with those wonderful cryptic lyrics that seem to suggest life, relationships, and science.
It also has the impression of being distinctly "Rush" in sound. The structure and style is unlike anybody else.
Try playing Lee's bass lines (and singing) simultaneously, Lifeson's guitar riffs/arpeggios and solos, and finally Peart's syncopated drum rhythms. None of the above is easy to perform.
The "musicians" in many of the so-called bands of today would be completely and utterly out of their depth i.e. bands like say McFly or U2. Rush's complicated awesome music could well be described as being on a "timeless wavelength"!!
sometimes hold your fire is a little bit underated, it has great songs like force ten, mission, prime mover, time stand still and lock and key, it deserves more recognition
I agree. It's my favorite Rush studio album. The problem with HYF, though, is that almost all of the songs sound incredibly better when performed live.
Some are equally good on HYF and ASOH...but in particular, the studio versions of "Mission" and "Turn The Page" are very weak.
@ZoahLord this isn't the only song left off of a cassette from a live album in the 80s. Ministry's "Stigmata" was left off the cassette of "In case you didn't feel like showing up live!" I hooked my VHS player up to my cassette deck and copied the VHS off onto tape! Got the whole damn thing! hahahaHA!
This song is absolutely brilliant. I learned this bass line and it was a b***h to get the right feel and intonation for this song. Geddy is extremely tough to emulate. This is also a very fun song on drums. I absolutely love the punch Neil's toms put out on this kit. I would kill to get that exact sound.
I really hope we get this gem on the Time Machine Tour!!!!!!!!! October can't get here fast enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just picked up the HYF album on CD. Love it -- especially this song. "Tai Shan" is beautiful, and the closing track ("High Water") is fantastic. I love how Rush can take complex intellectual topics and create great rock out of it.
I saw the HYF tour 3 different times in '87...Dallas, Little Rock, Memphis. Geddy kills this song live... As with everything this band does, their songs are better live and they don't scrimp on anything....
I agree with everyone who's posted a comment. This song NEEDS to be on the next tour. It will be my first Rush concert, i want to hear my fav song from my fav band!!
I can't get enough of Lee's bassline & tone on this song, not to mention the fact that I can't conceive of how he can play such complex lines and sing simultaneously. All three of these guys are just absurdly talented.
This song is a perfect example of why Rush are gods. Everything is perfect - the guitar, the bass (Geddy armed with that Wal bass = awesomeness embodied!), the synths, the drums and the mind-blowing lyrics. HYF is probably Rush's creative peak, and it is definitely my fave Rush album. This song is my second favourite after Emotion Detector.
Please guys, dig this out of the vault and play it next tour!
This song is a perfect example how Rush's music picks me up and whisks me away to sum higher way of feeling.Mentally & spiritually. There has been times that Rush has brought me to tears of joy. Bless this Band.

I agree jlsmsu . I believe Chronicles was one of those Best of Albums the Record Company put out without really consulting the boys. I think thats why they put out those 2 "Rush Retrospective" cds that one time because Rush felt that Chronicles didn't cover the scope of their career thoroughly. I still like Chronicles as a back up but yeah it's an incomplete picture of the Rush catalog.
God, I wish they would play this on the 08' tour. Lets be honest we wish they could play everything. For the first time listeners to this song and rush in general, the sound on Youtube does not do them justice. GO an get the DVD and a good sound system! RUSH=Gods.

If anyone can remind one why we are here at all, Rush comes closest.

God, I wish they would play this on the 08' tour. Lets be honest we wish they could play everything. For the first time listeners to this song and rush in general, the sound on Youtube does not do them justice. GO an get the DVD and a good sound system! RUSH=Gods.

I agree. This song is just so cool it would have been a welcome addition.
Culex1047 3 years ago 2
I say put this in place for dreamline or one little victory
FBIxWARNINGx 3 years ago 3
Yes -- it would be ***amazing**** to hear them pull Prime Mover out of the vault!

I'll take anything from Power Windows or Hold Your Fire. Specifically, this or Marathon. That would be incredible.

Marathon -- best Rush song ever, IMO! If they played this again, oh, baby...
