i would have had better luck asking a 8 year old how to tan a deer hide. This is a shitty video. If you are reading this comment waiting for this video to load, just trust me and exit out.
i tanned a deer hide with the hair on a few years back. This man has some fancy tools, but don't panic if you don't. I did the whole thing with no fleshing knife (handheld or electric), no fleshing beam, etc. It would have been easier if I DID have these things, but it is certainly possible without them.
And I wouldn't use something excessivly sharp to flesh the hide, like the scalpal he's using, it's likely to cut a hole in it, which is a pain to work around during the next three weeks.
Looks like one of those things they sell on TV, you know? "Just $19.99! CALL NOW!" LOL! Then you see 'em several months later at Wal-Mart or wherever, with "As Seen On TV" on the box. Now...if they didn't sell on TV, why...? Know what I mean?!!
i wouldnt salt it, it just drys it out, you can do the same thing by letting it air dry, then take brains mixed with water and blend them with a fork, put them in the Nuker for about 30 sec just to warm em, or do it over the stove, when there warm spread them evenly over the dry skin and work it in evenly and hit EVERY spot or it will dry hard as a rock, work it in and you will feel it soften up instantly. Watch it carefully as it drys, not to dry and then break the hide stretch and work it
salt is the preservative, just like pickling something in formaldehyde , preserving is necessary because it may stink o damp days in a bad way due to bacterial action
I totally disagree. Over half the videos on Youtube are commercials for something. It cost a lot of time and money to produce professional instruction videos. Our intention is not to mislead but provide information on were you can get quality taxidermy videos for a reasonable price.
There is lots of free information on google some of it is good and some is not. We have spent a ton of time and money producing good quality content and just want to recoup our costs. We are using youtube to let interested parties know about it.

is that salt uniodized???
IPOD4WHO 3 years ago
I read somewhere online its supposed to be canning salt, not iodized. Cabelas sells tanning kits, but I don't think they include the canning salt.

Capitolism is fine, but do you really have to charge people to teach them how to utilize all parts of the animal they have just harvested?
