Landshark stadium will never compare to the Orange Bowl. Ever. It may have been rickety, it may have been ancient, but it was home to the Hurricanes. Much like Lane Stadium to Virginia Tech. There was just an aura about that stadium.
You know, we here in Ohio are a bit biased when it comes to football and tradition. A bit full of ourselves, maybe. But NOBODY can argue the importance of the city of Miami and in particular the Orange Bowl stadium. You could list countless memorable games and sights with just the two home teams that played there throughout the years in the Dolphins and 'Canes. They had some of the biggest games in their own histories on that field, and we can all remember them no matter who we root for....
...But when you think of the major sporting events and gatherings there, between all the incredible Super Bowls and Orange Bowl classics, you have to say that place was one of the most important structures in our country's entire sports history. Hands down, it was the biggest stage to be on when the lights came on for a night game. The crazy fans and incredible noise they made in that place will be heard in our minds forever. I even loved the way the turf got chewed up around bowl season and
...the NFL playoffs, and you could see the faded orange bowl guy with the crown at midfield for Dolphins playoff games. I'm an old Browns season ticket holder, and kept them for our rebirth in '99. I understand how it just isn't the same once the old stadium is gone. I know Miami built a new one in the late 80's, but to me it was never the same once they left the Orange Bowl. We don't preserve most old historical places, we tear 'em down in pursuit of the allmighty dollar and luxury suites.
...It may be a quick payoff and turnaround money-wise for owners of teams, but the atmosphere and electricity and passion don't always make the move with the team to the new stadium. I'll always have a fondness for old stadium sites, empty lots now or not, because it's where the real history and memories of our best days happen. The OB was electric. They'll never make anything like it, anywhere again. You can't help but be sad to see it go, condemned building or not.
If the Packers can still play @ Lambeu Field then why couldn't the Dolphins play @ the Orange Bowl? It would've cost less if not the same to renovate the stadium.
At the old OB, I saw an Easter pageant in the '50s, Johnny Unitas quarterback sneaking in the '60s, the 'Fins' undefeated season in the early '70s, and was an extra in the '76 filming there of "Black Sunday". So many memories for so many of us.
Shula's BIGGEST loss of his HOF career was played at the Orange Bowl in 1969. His team lost to the NY JETS 16 - 7. Because of this game, Shula was let go and eventually signed by the Dolphins.
He was hardly let go. In fact, Shula cost the Dolphins a number one draft pick as punishment for tampering. It was a violation for the Dolphins front office to go directly to the coach with a job offer, they needed to go to the Colts front office.
They are done demolishing it, who knows what will replace it now there. Considering how controversial and poorly executed the Florida Marlins Stadium deal is set up; maybe even they won't even built the stadium there. I hope that they do not put a Wallmart Superstore there.
They already over build Brickell and Downtown Miami with them. A Big box large store and a shopping center are more likely there if the stadiums are not built there (plans for the Soccer stadium are even more unlikely than those for the baseball stadium).
I live across the miami river and the over built the area and brickell is just four block away. I see a new publix or worse yet a new mall for the latins oh vey and I am latin. Remember when the city of miami passed a bill for a Castro is dead party at the OB for when he finally croaks?
Regardless of what happens to the site of the now gone Orange Bowl, it was tragic how politics accelerated its demise. It was its time to go in the end, but was so controversial and unfair for its long history & legacy. I hope the name remains on the site for any new project they put there, it could nice if the OB's outer frame is rebuilt for any project that replaces the Marlin's Stadium. The site is large enough for an Imax with 10 screening galleries, I would love to have one there.
the problem is that if you put something that is cheap to shop of see movies the neighborhood would draw punks and gang members. The bottom line is the city of miami neglected it for 10 years before the dolphins left in 87. I last went to a game in 2006. when I look at the steel coloums under the upper deck it was so rusted I thought it could come down.
I know, after so many years of poor management by the City of Miami, the poor Stadium had to go. Oh well, consider it anogher sign of the coming End of the World. At least it was spared becoming an artificial island if sea levels go up as they are supposed to. It could have reminded people of the floating fortress of Water World.
That was a great farewell event, I was there. Everything sorry and great about Miami's Grand Old Stadium, booing Diaz and Zanchez, the Hooker (sorry Hooter) girls and their mascot, The Greedy Blood Sucking Miccosukees Casino, the veteran players and coaches too. They want to put the new Marlins stadium there as well as a Soccer stadium nearby (crazy).
so many great memories growing up in South Floridain the 70's and 80's saw great games there with the Dolphins and Hurricanes-hate to see it go

I would have, but I hadn't been born yet. The first game that I REALLY watched here was the Rice Paddy Classic in 1983 against the Jets.
