Where did you start biking? I drove up it, and the climb was... intense even for the car and I saw ppl biking up from like...the base, where the homes are.
@phaschum I want to say it took us 7 hours but we stopped to enjoy all the views, had some lunch, and I was ill. Yes, I climbed Mt. Haleakala on a bike.....with a cold.
@phaschum I did this climb back in 1989, in about 5 hours. Most of the grade is less than 6%, but its harder to breathe around 9,000 feet up. The last mile or so is when you really feel the altitude. Pedal 15 seconds, stop, 15 more, stop, etc. This was one the best rides ever. If you're in decent shape, you can do it. But take twice as much water as you estimate. I ran out of water with 10 miles left, had to bum some from a passing motorist.
at the 3/6/11 annual Fargo climb, I became the first person in history to successfully climb Fargo street...on a UNICYCLE! And I did it twice! Go to my channel at ttt8699 and look for "Fargo Street Hill Climb 2011 "UNIGEEZER" MAKES HISTORY!"
@bl00dw0lf6 This musicshake production SUCKS! I am changing it now....I have no idea how this song got on here, I must have let YouTube choose the music when they took all mine away for copyright reasons.
Cool!! When I rode up it in july 2007, the downhill bike tours had been suspended (too many accidents and a few deaths). Mine was a lonelier ride. Also WAY wetter - you guys got so lucky with the weather! Thanks for taping and posting.
I just did the 2008 Run to the Sun Haleakala (36.2 miles) from Maui mall. Took me 7 hours and 34 mins, this video reminds me of that run...every step of it. thanks =)
I just did this climb 10 days ago to the day when I was there.. I have to agree there is just a pull from this beautiful mountain that begs you to come back for more... people may think we are stupid for riding up it, but how many people in the world can say they did it or can even do it! Haleakala RULES!
I did this ride a few years ago and was hooked ever since! Now, every time I visit family on Maui I have to bring my bike. There's just something about that Mountain that calls you back. I also love the comments from the downhillers, my favorite is being called a "Spandex Warrior". Good job! You lucked out with the weather, my last two visits were clouded, wet and cold.
I just did this ride in late October (2007). I am posting a comment to say thanks as I had watched your video before I left for Maui and I was just checking it out again. I wish I had a clear day like had in your video... Funny thing is that my wife and kids had a video camera to shoot a video similar to what you did, but I left the camera on in the car before we got started and by the time I reached the park entrance the camera was dead. Great video!
Beautiful ride, My dad and I did it a few summers back (to be honest though, we drove half the way up) I'll never forget the downhill bikers telling us we were going the wrong way! Thanks for posting the video, good memories!
We took our time and stopped to admire the views. I want to say it took around 7 hours starting from the beach. If you are in decent shape and don't stop alot it would be around 4 or 5 hours.
Is there stops on the way up to refill your water and get lunch? Where are these junctions? Thinking about riding this in few weeks.

Thanks for the great video. I rode it two weeks ago in even better conditions; no clouds all the way up. It's one of the worlds great rides.

that place is high can u breath??
LonelyXwalk 2 years ago
@LonelyXwalk I didn't have a problem with the thin air but we caught some riders that were really struggling with it.

mauna kea is almost 14000feet high, 68.6km of climbing with an average of 6.1%, with the last 20km at 10% average!!!
I think it's the most difficult and hardest climb in the world that you can do by bike

Impressive ascent. Not easy at all. Nice one!
