Can anyone tell me what your thoughts about the meaning of this scene are? i would like to hear it.
If there is a meaning to this scene i would say it represents what Luke is afraid he'll become, that's why he couldn't go into the cave without a weapon, he might actually be scared of that fact subconciously from a long time ago.
This reminds me of a story from Joseph Campbell. “In New Ginea, there’s a wonderful, wonderful, event where this poor kid has to stand up and fight a man with a mask. They say he’s fighting a god! The man lets the kid win, takes the mask off, puts it on the kid. Now the mask is not there defeated and simple said ‘Aww, this is just myth’. It says ‘The mask represents the power that is shaping the society and has shaped you and now you are a representative of that power’, that’s a big story.”
This kind of vision happened to me when I was playing WoW. As a normal video gamer, I thought that I could fight against the temptation of addiction but my emotions raged on; I thought I could beat the game. Lo, I saw my face on the most fattened, pimply MMORPG addict; I have become what I've fought so hard against.
When I first Watched "Empire" at age 11, I didn't understand this scene, because I was new to Star Wars. Now that I'm Older, I understand it. It's like something out of a Bad Dream. I guess not understanding it is a Little Kid Thing.
What is it with the memory/image of Vader of this cave?! Galen Marek also sees (although he doesn't fight... doesn't really get the chance to...) Vader in the Cave of Eeeeeevil! (sorry I had to do it... :P)
This scene did give me the creeps when I was younger, but it doesn't bother me so much anymore. This proves that even the most cheerful of Saga's has it's dark moments.
The cave is a Force Nexus: a location that is saturated with Force energy from the trapped spirit(s) of (a) Jedi or Sith. When a living force user enters a Nexus, the Nexus manifests itself as a vision of whatever the person is afraid of. Luke at first thinks his worst fear is Vader, before realizing that what he fears most is the possibility of himself as a Sith.
Jedi frequently use such places to test their students. Luke fails this encounter because he let his fear get the best of him.
@OHBOYKID316 You're welcome. Some functions of a nexus:
1) It forces you to confront your worst fear, conscious or unconscious. You can't act out of fear, anger, or hatred if you want to pass the trial.
2) It dredges up and manifests a part of your personality that you keep hidden from yourself and then tries to overwhelm you with it (Usually to kill or turn you to the dark side).
3) Reveals things that you've forgotten or shows you what you are looking for. (As seen in TFU2).
It's basically saying if he keeps up on the path he's doing right now (Arrogance, anger from his friend's fighting all that good stuff) he'll end up just like his father
No what I think jpals93 is trying to say is that someone re-edited the lighsaber's with photoshop. This might be the un-altered version and in my opinion all the unaltered versions execpt ANH the lightsabers look way better before lucas changed them.
in a way yes. before luke goes in the cave yoda says to luke that he will not need his weapons. but luke thinks he can not go in unarmed. this is a sign of luke's fear and anger. so after luke defeats "darth vader" in the cave he sees that in the helmet is his face.that is a warning in the force telling luke about what might happen if he joined the dark side of the force.

This might be the only scene in all of Star Wars that qualifies as true art.

As a kid growing up with the prequels, I always believed it to be Anakin's face. But now I know better. I like the PT but the OT is much better.

I never did understand this scene.
1 - how can vader be there? or elsewhere after getting killed?
2 - how can luke win so easily?
3 - whose face is it because it doesn't look like luke or anakin?
4 - why does yoda say you will need no weapons when vader has a lightsaber so clearly he will need weapons?

1- It's a "dream sequence".
2- It's a "dream sequence". Also, film pacing.
3- It's Luke, trust me.
4- This is a symbolic dream sequence about Luke conquering his own fears, and himself.

This movie was filmed in 1979 and released in May of 1980, that was so long before photoshop.

No what I think jpals93 is trying to say is that someone re-edited the lighsaber's with photoshop. This might be the un-altered version and in my opinion all the unaltered versions execpt ANH the lightsabers look way better before lucas changed them.

This comes from the Original Version.
I can tell which version of the trilogy is which. This is how they looked on the 1993 LaserDisc, 1997 Special Edition.
For the 2004 DVD they were altered.
Riddler95 2 years ago
i found the trilogy on vhs which was the theatrical versions , the last time they were available iuntil recently on dvd

The Lightsabers look great here, then for the DVD release Lucas went and changed them and they looked too slim.
Riddler95 2 years ago
Totally agreed, Riddler... I have the 1997 re-release, and... thank God I do.
There comes a point where re-re-re-RE-releasing stuff... just messes it up more. A lot more.

Yeah, in fighting the dark side, you become the dark side, you cannot defeat it at its own game.
