its funny my 13 year old cousin drove my 1999 caviler stander for his first time last week around are farm down a dirt road he never stalled once not even going up a 40 dagree hit on a compleate stop never got any help
do you guys feel switching gears are more jerky in a manual car than in an automatic? or do you think with a good driver, someone driving stick can shift as smooth as an automatic car? someone reply plz :)
Lmfao...my brother is teaching me now and i swear that car probably called me every name in the book..i stalled every 2 seconds.. it takes a lot of patience to teach someone to drive a stick... cool vid
aahhhh I remember 2 years ago when I started to learn how to drive, same thing happened to me and I think everyone who has started with a manual transmission car has experienced the same thing jeje, but is normal the first time, the you will get experience.
I learn in a 1993 Toyota Tercel, and it resist me and my 2 brothers learning to drive, a great car, my father still have it.
I had to learn on my own on the neighborhood streets with my dad's car. He was just too lazy, although he came with me the first time. After that, I was left alone. Finally I decided I'd treat the car like a toy, and started playing with it, trying to get to know it better and how it worked... and it worked out pretty well, I'm a pretty decent driver with great control over the machine... ¿Thanks Dad?... lol
I found the best way to learn was give it no gas until it starts moving so you get the feel and just go into 1st. After you do that for a while, do it with gas, and then you can start worrying about 2nd and up.
I drove for the first time today. I had the same problem, I was also jerking the car a little when I took off because there was just so much for me to focus on. You did a good job. Well done.
@BrokenSyntheticWings That's my problem too. I try to focus on doing the clutch/gas thing correctly, on not burning up the clutch, on not pissing the guy behind me off, and not to crash the one in front.
Learning to drive stick is hard but I hope once it becomes second nature it becomes much more fun
@GhostFalcon5 thanks man, it's just that im barely learning so for now it's frustratinc cuz im used to automatics and im not used to doing all the stuff you do with sticks. And I really hate when on street lights people stop like 2 inches from your rear bumper. But hopefully i get the hang of it quicly. Thanks bro
@datpimpinboy yeah bro, if somebody gets up on you like that let off more on the clutch before givin it gas, it will send you forward slowly. Its just a ratio, 50% gas, 50% clutch. You WILL get the hang of it, you just gotta keep practicin, man. Good luck.
I'm learning to drive standard right now after driving automatic for about 3 years, shit sucks, what's worse is that I'm learning on my 2005 STI lol :\
@drowboy21 Lol, same here bro! I've been driving automaics for 3 years, and i got my first car and it's a stick. At first I thought I woule NEVER get it, im getting better now, but sometimes i get frustrated lol
I remember my first time driving a manual. I started in a 2001 Saturn SC2. Not a great car but easy to drive. Now I drive a 2007 VW Jetta with a 5-speed and I'll never go back to an automatic.
@PIchillin456 How hard was it to learn? How long did it take you? I just got my first car and It's a standard and it's kinda hard but ive only had one lesson. Do you think ill get it eventually?
@datpimpinboy Well it took me a while to learn because the car wasn't always available (it was my sister's) but really it shouldn't take too long. When my sister first got her car it took her about a day of driving it around to get used to it. Within a week she was driving it perfectly. She's one to get really frustrated and give up on things so I think that you'll get it eventually. It quickly becomes second nature. What kind of car if you don't mind me asking?
@PIchillin456 Okay thanks. That makes me feel better lol I was getting frustrated because I practiced for like an hour and I couldnt even get the car in first gear. But I'm hoping that next time I practice I can get it right. I was kinda regretting getting a manual and thinking I should have gotten an auto. It's an 03 Mitsubishi Eclipse. I know they arent the most reliable car, but its my first car, it was cheap and should be fun to drive. I'll get something better when I can afford it lol
@datpimpinboy Those things are actually fun as hell. My friend has a black 2003 Eclipse GS with a 5-speed manual and it's a great car. Never had any problems with it. FYI he taught himself how to drive stick. He drove it off the lot knowing practically nothing and now he's great at driving stick. Now do you mean that you can't get the car in first gear like you couldn't find first gear or that you couldn't get it going from a start in first gear?
@PIchillin456 Yea they are fun cars to learn, hopefully I get the hang of it quicly so I can start enjoying it more. And that's crazy, I would never be able to drive a stick off the lot without knowing how to drive one. And I mean as in I couldnt take off from first gear, like I would always make the car shake or stall lol
@datpimpinboy Yeah he actually did a huge burnout by mistake. Gave it too many revs and then ended up dumping the clutch. He was treating the clutch like an on-off switch.
@datpimpinboy If you can't get it going a good starting point is to put it in first gear, rev the engine to around 2,000 rpm (at least in the eclipse), and slowly let out the clutch. Then accelerate like you do in an automatic until the revs get somewhere between 3,000 and 4,000 rpm, put the clutch in, switch to second gear, and let out the clutch SLOWLY with no gas pedal this time, then accelerate once the clutch is completely out. Treat gears 3-5 like 2nd gear.
@PIchillin456 Thanks, I will try to do that next time. My biggest problem is that I didnt know if I had to press the gas before letting out the clutch or if I had to press the gas once I was releasing the clutch and I got to the engagement point of the clutch and the transmission. What I was doing is that I was revving it to 1000rpm and letting out the clutch and then the car shaked and sometimes I'd let out the gas and then the car stalled. Thanks for the help though, appreciate it.
@datpimpinboy Don't ever feel embarrassed about having trouble at the start. Everyone does! It's funny! I was laughing so hard when I tried standard for the first time. I was stalling constantly, grinding gears, and all sorts of fun stuff. But it was worth it! It's the old statement of "practice makes perfect," and standards illustrate that perfectly. The hardest part is taking off. Once you get the hang of that, you're good. Standards are fun! Fuel efficient and fast, and a blast to drive.
@captaindroid Thanks man, appreciate that. I was just kinda nervous because i had never driven a stick before, and it's my first car so I was thinking I should have gotten an auto. My biggest worry is learn how to use the clutch properly and not stall in public roads, and how to drive in the highway. But i hope i get it with a little practice. How long did it take you to learn? and what are the best things to keep in mind while learning?
@datpimpinboy Sorry I haven't had internet and moved since my last post. By the time you read this you should have the hang of things. It took me about three days, and on day four I was driving smoothly in highway stop-and-go traffic. The take-off is the hardest part, but once that thing gets moving it's a smooth ride. Keep in mind it's difficult at first, but a year or two down the road you'll be driving the standard without even thinking about it. Best of luck to you.
@captaindroid Lol yea thanks man. I got it now, ive been driving around a lot and have had no problems. I havent stalled at all. Well, except going to my driveway which is a bit tricky because you have to go slowly uphill. Other than that its pretty easy
@datpimpinboy It isn't hard. I bought a new car with a manual without having any experience at all and was able to (from watching youtube videos) drive it home and then to my mother's house 40 miles away. I just practices getting into first in a parking lot the next day for a couple of hours and now I'm just trying to make it as smooth as possible. I spun my wheels a lot getting into 1st my first day, but it comes quickly. Watch How To videos on youtube and you'll be well prepared.
@eurohim I got it a lot better now, I can drive it now, but doesnt it worry you to burn the clutch?? Thats what makes me most worried when driving stick... that and driving uphill
@datpimpinboy I do worry about burning out the clutch, but I also worry about getting rear ended because I stalled and the guy riding my bumper is at a race to get to the next light. Also, I don't like to wait to get good at stuff. I'd rather be good at it right now. A new clutch isn't horribly expensive. Either way, I have to learn, so buying a new clutch now or later doesn't matter. It is all beneficial in the long run because I'll be able to drive anything.
@eurohim You're right! I have to learn so if learning requires burning the clutch a bit, well I guess I have no option, that's what you get for getting stick. It can be a bit expensive, ive heard they cost between 400-900 dollars on normal cars. So I better start saving up for that new clutch lol But yea, I really hate when at stop lights I have to worry about not burning the clutch too much but not pissing off the guy behind me. I guess practice makes perfect, so I just gotta practice a lot and
@datpimpinboy Actually now that you mention it, what really scares me is stalling while making a left turn across oncoming traffic. Imagine rolling a couple feet into the way of people quickly coming at you at 50mph or more. Eep! Burn Clutch Burn!
@eurohim Dude, that same exact thing happened to me. Just like you described it. It was my first time by myself. I was at the middle lane about to make a U-Turn, I though I had enough time, but guess what, I SATLLED with the car completely sideways across the street. The I turned and saw a big F-350 with the huge benders comming at 50 MPH. I thought I was gonna die right there. But thankfully, I managed to turn the car on and move enough to not crash right before the truck was about to hit me.
@datpimpinboy I find the best way to go up a hill without rolling much if at all when you're still getting your timing down is to hold the brake until you get to the sticking point and then rev the engine to move and let the clutch out. When it is at the sticking point, it won't move backwards, so there you go. Just make sure not to do that to hold yourself in place instead of the brakes because that will tear up a clutch quick.
@eurohim So if you do that for a short time, like just to get you moving, it wont hurt the clutch? or like maybe it will hurt it but not enough to tear it up?
@datpimpinboy Well, any time you do it, it hurts the clutch regardless of how good you are. It is like being in stop and go traffic, I suppose. It is a very quick way to get good though.
@Stephster11 lol, it was a joke, i dont see how someone can go so long without at least having an understanding of how things work. nobody taught me and i learned myself in 1 min, alone.
It's all about the clutch. You can get going with hardly any gas if you use the clutch correctly. That was my problem when I first started was I focused way too much on the gas pedal.
After a while, it's second nature and there is absolutely nothing else I'd rather own than a standard!
Man, how hard could it be to drive a car with a manual gearbox. that's is what is wrong with the driving lessons in your country. you only learn to drive cars with automatic gearbox. way better to learn the manual gearbox. if you can drive a stick, then you can drive automatic too
@D14A32N00 yeah! exactly! im laughing so much with comments. people sometimes, start a fight for no reason, and the guy is learning how to drive at that moment.
it's not about the amount of gas, it's about letting off the clutch slowly.
best way to train using the clutch is start rolling in first without giving gas, then u will know the bite point of the clutch and then u can easily give gas and go to that point hold it like 1 sec then ease off
the way i learned it was to rev it up to around 2k, slowly let the clutch out until you feel it catch, once its engaged gas and release clutch slowly.
took me like 3 minutes to learn. but i'm still sketchy on them sometimes
Best way to learn manual shifting is not to learn to drive on an automatic first. Handy hint - learn to push the clutch pedal IN when things go wrong.
@JBofBrisbane actually best way to learn is to just drive I started driving an auto first and I my first time I was luckily enough to not stall the car and did really well after getting really good at driving a stick I stalled it for the first time learning rev match and double clutching which I might add is fun as hell
the hardest part is learning how to get it Rolling into first gear...i spent 1 hour in a Kmart parking lot just learning that...FFS you gotta put just the right amount of gas...or else you will stall out..all in all....i love my 5 speed Honda CRX Coupe..i just gotta learn how to drive it LOL
@TheSniperr I don't use gas to pull away. I just get the clutch to the biting point and start adding the gas once i get going. Not the best way to treat the clutch plate but who cares?! :D
it is hard teaching sumone how to use a clutch cause the person teachin does it like second nature? oha nd lol u went into 4th cody wat happened to learn the gears before u drive?
Funny video and sh*t but come on im 15 and i drove a manual car without stalling it once you should watch other youtube videos then do it yourself cause its harder just coming outta no where and doing it you need to see someone with expierence first
i thank god when i learned stick i had a better teacher then this... maybe he stalled 20 times trying to get it into 1st because the best advice he had was "try to juggle the gas and clutch pedals"
Learning to use a manual gearbox for me was interesting. I had to get to the store during a snowstorm and my auto wouldn't start, I had to take my mother's manual.
Driving stick for the first time in a snowstorm is a bad idea.
dude today same shit happened to me.... my brother was teaching me how to drive stick and every time i tried to let go of the clutch in first gear the fucking car was shaking like if it was an earthquake!!!!!
this guy is the worst teacher ever. he should have let him give more gas when hes trying to start in first. and he should have just told him to let off the clutch as slowly as possible
HAHAHAHA i wanna get out of plain sight. he got it going though. its pretty easy to drive a stick.. i stalled 3 times in a row my first time. but i got it after like 10 min.
I think hte mistake here is that the guy teaching said once u feel the car moving let of the clutch..but on sum cars if u do that right away then u'll stall it...however great job man u definetly caught on faster than sum people i've tried teaching
i think it would be easyer for people if they had like a four wheeler or dirt bike to pratice how to use clutch and gears then comming to the time to drive its more simple.
haha, im learning how to drive a standard also, and all i need to learn is how to take off smooth, and downshift, because i forget to downshift and will be at a stopsighn in 3rd,,, hopefully i get the hang of it
@traxxas1234567890 dont say that bout him... obv this is his first time driving stick so hes bound to mess up... this happend to me aswell when i first learned stick... i stalled it about 50 times befor i actually got the car rolling... i can guaranty that everyone stalls on they first time trying stick... atleast more then twice....
stick seems hard, lol that what she said, but it really does seem kind of hard to do, thats what she said again lol, but i want to lean how to drive a stick someday
@AlexF931 because it encourages people to keep trying.

Either way, I have to learn, so buying a new clutch now or later doesn't matter. It is all beneficial in the long run because I'll be able to drive anything.
eurohim 8 months ago
@eurohim You're right! I have to learn so if learning requires burning the clutch a bit, well I guess I have no option, that's what you get for getting stick. It can be a bit expensive, ive heard they cost between 400-900 dollars on normal cars. So I better start saving up for that new clutch lol But yea, I really hate when at stop lights I have to worry about not burning the clutch too much but not pissing off the guy behind me. I guess practice makes perfect, so I just gotta practice a lot and
datpimpinboy 8 months ago
@datpimpinboy Actually now that you mention it, what really scares me is stalling while making a left turn across oncoming traffic. Imagine rolling a couple feet into the way of people quickly coming at you at 50mph or more. Eep! Burn Clutch Burn!
eurohim 8 months ago
@eurohim Dude, that same exact thing happened to me. Just like you described it. It was my first time by myself. I was at the middle lane about to make a U-Turn, I though I had enough time, but guess what, I SATLLED with the car completely sideways across the street. The I turned and saw a big F-350 with the huge benders comming at 50 MPH. I thought I was gonna die right there. But thankfully, I managed to turn the car on and move enough to not crash right before the truck was about to hit me.
datpimpinboy 8 months ago
@eurohim ...... let my clutch take the beating :/ Driving up hill still can be tricky though
datpimpinboy 8 months ago
@datpimpinboy I find the best way to go up a hill without rolling much if at all when you're still getting your timing down is to hold the brake until you get to the sticking point and then rev the engine to move and let the clutch out. When it is at the sticking point, it won't move backwards, so there you go. Just make sure not to do that to hold yourself in place instead of the brakes because that will tear up a clutch quick.
eurohim 8 months ago
@eurohim So if you do that for a short time, like just to get you moving, it wont hurt the clutch? or like maybe it will hurt it but not enough to tear it up?
datpimpinboy 8 months ago
@datpimpinboy Well, any time you do it, it hurts the clutch regardless of how good you are. It is like being in stop and go traffic, I suppose. It is a very quick way to get good though.
eurohim 8 months ago
@eurohim Oh okay. I guess there aint no other way around it. The other way would be using the e brake but that seems kinda complicated
datpimpinboy 8 months ago
The gears on that car are super weird.....

@sanelloves 13? balls on you I learned when I was 11 or 12.
SkittlesLover41290 1 year ago
it's not about the amount of gas, it's about letting off the clutch slowly.
best way to train using the clutch is start rolling in first without giving gas, then u will know the bite point of the clutch and then u can easily give gas and go to that point hold it like 1 sec then ease off
weebl15 1 year ago
its all about releasing the clutch slow, but really having a stick car to drive regularly is the best way. Lurn yor kar
hazyazn 1 year ago
the way i learned it was to rev it up to around 2k, slowly let the clutch out until you feel it catch, once its engaged gas and release clutch slowly.
took me like 3 minutes to learn. but i'm still sketchy on them sometimes

tunitboy100 1 year ago
Best way to learn manual shifting is not to learn to drive on an automatic first. Handy hint - learn to push the clutch pedal IN when things go wrong.
JBofBrisbane 1 year ago
@JBofBrisbane actually best way to learn is to just drive I started driving an auto first and I my first time I was luckily enough to not stall the car and did really well after getting really good at driving a stick I stalled it for the first time learning rev match and double clutching which I might add is fun as hell
gamefan101 1 year ago
@JBofBrisbane Exactly what I was going to post. Pushing the clutch will save a learner in a lot of situations and will prevent stalling ect

rawrgrr4298 1 year ago
the hardest part is learning how to get it Rolling into first gear...i spent 1 hour in a Kmart parking lot just learning that...FFS you gotta put just the right amount of gas...or else you will stall out..all in all....i love my 5 speed Honda CRX Coupe..i just gotta learn how to drive it LOL
TheSniperr 1 year ago
@TheSniperr I don't use gas to pull away. I just get the clutch to the biting point and start adding the gas once i get going. Not the best way to treat the clutch plate but who cares?! :D
rawrgrr4298 1 year ago
it is hard teaching sumone how to use a clutch cause the person teachin does it like second nature? oha nd lol u went into 4th cody wat happened to learn the gears before u drive?

S2Kimporter 1 year ago
Funny video and sh*t but come on im 15 and i drove a manual car without stalling it once you should watch other youtube videos then do it yourself cause its harder just coming outta no where and doing it you need to see someone with expierence first
jamaal555 1 year ago
i thank god when i learned stick i had a better teacher then this... maybe he stalled 20 times trying to get it into 1st because the best advice he had was "try to juggle the gas and clutch pedals"
cletedawgthewalmart 1 year ago
i stalled once when i first did it but i was in a mustang with t5 trans i went from 2nd to 5th

Learning to use a manual gearbox for me was interesting. I had to get to the store during a snowstorm and my auto wouldn't start, I had to take my mother's manual.
Driving stick for the first time in a snowstorm is a bad idea.
