i think this is a modified wing chun, it's quite different from the original one, but you guys seems to use so much on foot, and just relax your mucsles, dont contract to much, otherwise you will be too slow to block or strike people.
i agree with blackhandbill, CHI SAU is good for making your hands sensitive which make you react faster and be able to block or attack without your eyes.
also, please be reminded that the concept of WING CHUN is for blocking and gyming only, ALSO, The philosophy.
I love how technical wc is, especially compared to some tkd (not that we don't have technique, we just don't use as efficient techniques in general. It is a sport, too). I do wonder though-why is it that wc uses a squared off stance sometimes and an upright back stance-ish stance at other times?
This is Austin Goh wing chun , Lee Shing's lineage , but Austin mixed everything he learnt including Chi Kung in his teachings so this is not traditonal wing chun as you guys think.
This is beautiful to watch. You are both obviously quite confident in your respective skill levels, and never did there seem to be a time when one of you lost control. Everything was smooth, fast, and well-executed - and in such a confined space as well!
Well done gentlemen. this is how it should be all the time.
The elbow is very important in VT. What i dont get is schools that teach Bi Jong or the 'pose' if you will, to be held with the arm/s heavily extended. The straighter the arm the less elbow power you have and the less punching power you can transfer...
Tighten it up guys, youll feel better launching actions from the center with less arm extension.
RELAX - you guys are too tight! It's a soft style...And maybe less dancing-about behavior. :-D Some very nice locks there. Looks like fun! Short haired man came from TKD, before starting WC no? No room for it there, but watch the back-leg sweep or a falling scissors. I've had good luck with those against WC...Good to see the 'my style is better' trolls are out in force.
I've never studied WC, but it looks like the short-haired man is constantly getting overpowered because he just stands there and takes it. I think he should work on evasive footwork, instead of just staning in-line with the long-haired man's attacks and having to contend with each blow block-by-block. Good luck.
A slap is all it takes to announce the contact that would be a real strike. The giving your back is a spin to avoid a fight-ending lock - well, an attempt to avoid, anyway. :-D
woods1 just owned this vid lol. Wing Chun sucks shit and is worthless, just like Karate. It has been proven in combat and even Bruce Lee himself(so the noobs will understand) said it. Learn a good martial art like boxing, muay thai, BJJ, judo, and wrestling and stop wasting your time with this inefectual crap.
Hmmm. Shows up, trolls someone else's video and offers vague commentary on what's better...Suppose he's 'compensating' for a um...'short'-fall somewhere else? ;-)
Sparring- however light SHOULD be conuctd in he proper location and with the right equipment. Sparring for ego or the admiration of others is not the true meaning of Karate.
There is a genuine lack of any real control. More emphasis needs to be put of muscle development, and you need to train the fundamentals more. Techniques should be practised and then practised again. Too much emphasis being put on the open hand strikes. Training like this needs to be more concentrated and less haphazard.
Giving your opponent your back, bad. IF you apply a lock or choke finish the technique to a tapout, then you know it works. Leg checks a little mistimed. Off balance alot .. a good way to meet the ground. Awesome training in a small pace, good idea.
year mcdaveo right, finger wide open, someone keeps feinting by hitting your finger with their fist, I did 3 years ago with a up and coming featherweight, i didn't spar i wanted to show him how effective wing chun was, and he feinted me and punch my fingers several times as i tried to come in. he broke my finger and it bloody hurt. i dont keep my fingers open any more. so next time you decide to match up with a boxer remember, he boxes, he doesn't keep his finger up on show.
yea, keep your fingers closed. i've severely jammed, sprained, and broken three different fingers because i didn't keep my fingers closed during sparring. i finally learned my lesson and it hasn't happened since. basically, if you leave it open, there's no support and if it gets caught on something, you're done.
Also a bit of advice I always found useful is to concentrate on hitting your opponent, and not be too obsessed with the forward hand just hanging there begging to be touched.Hope it helps : ) Ignore me if you don't find it useful!
good to spar, sometimes we wingchun practitioners neglect this aspect. Anyway I'd say you mum sau is too far out. it should have a slight bend in it so you have the option of extending it or retracting it if its touched or grabbed. Also you both have a tendency to turn your backs when your hands are grabbed. dangerous habbit. throw in a bit more of that wingchun footwork and you'd be a lot deadlier as well.
I understand the arms are out so that sensitivity can be reached quickly, but you guys are also leading with your chins up. It isn't very protective, especially sense you both have good kicking skills. The main thing I would want you guys to do differently is keep your elbows in and hands up. Then, when you have a solid chance of entering trapping range you could extend. Against a good puncher, especially in that kind of enviorment, would be dangerous with your hands down and out.
I thought it was interesting that by the end of the video, silumtao was exhausted while olioh remained calm and rested. Steady breathing and a relaxed (but focused) guard may improve the effectiveness of one's reactions.
Hey, i havent had training in Wing Chun, but i was always taught, even when sparring, to have closed fists to avoid finger injuries. i know this may be viewed differently in this form of martial arts. the only reason i am mentioning this is that at some points when u guys were making a move you still had an open hand...
Yes, that's a good point. In hard sparring, good idea to keep fists clenched but the downside to that is that it will make you tense up a lot more. Anyway, more important is to train your fingers to be like iron ;) Like you say, depending on your school, experience, conditioning... there are different ways to approach this
A closed fist cannot be used to grapple. Further, Wing Chun is a very soft style - they're almost limp when they fight and move like whips. I've done a fair amount of street fighting and it's one of the styles that I'm VERY cautious facing in any environment. (Muay Thai and any grappling art are others)
Shortie-hair needs a little confidence and to stop giving space when he feels threatened, if anything, advance and smother your man when you feel the threat, that will neutralise most of his striking potential.
Yah, that's a fundamental tactic of Wing Chun. I'm assuming pony-tail is giving him a chance. Usual WC tactic is to power in with three strikes at once and get inside and then just beat the snot out of 'em. It's VERY disconcerting to face in the ring when done right. He DID say this was VERY light, for fun between friends.
I've actually enoyed this and I put it in my favorites. Both guys are talented, pony tail guy is better though. I really liked the movement and the technique. Constructive criticism: Pony tail, know that in a real fight you will lose it!Get a haircut, no offense. Also forget the high kicks they don't work on the street. Spar with contact! Get some WC gloves some headgear and spar as hard as you can take it if not full contact. You're both talented don't waste it.
Yep, I totally agree with you. I'm not a fighter and yes my hair is a massive liability =) In sparring I just stick the high kicks in so my opponent can practice dealing with them. In a "real fight" I would use a different approach (hopefully haha), this is what I call playing.
We do spar with contact usually, but this is just some fun after class. As the guy I am sparring with is my junior by a few years (in terms of training), this wasn't the time to be kicking the poo out of his shins or punching him in the neck =) Thanks for the encouragment, always good to hear.
where do you guys do wing chun? that long bridge stuff doesn't look confident. how long have you been training? i've got two words for you... CHI SAU! and stop doing high kicks there a waste of energy, i'd like to roll with you guys specialy matey with the pony tail.
@blackhandbill thats all people do in wing chun is chi sau theres more to wing chun than chi sau. love to see you chi sau on the street. its just a drill.
I'm not seeing any Wing Chun here. Just kicking. When the hippy goes in, there is no finishing the movement, just the intimation of a finish. I want to see control and more control. Where are the controling pulls, holds, hitting thru the gaps, grabbing the back of the head and elbowing and so on? HAND skill levels need to improve before I would call it Wing Chun.
hi guys thanks for all the comments, I am the shorthaired guy. I have been training for quite a while since this vid, we have filmed a few more sparring sessions hopefully a new vid should be posted soon.
Nice spar. for the short hair practice your chisoa! It'll improve your sensitivity and awareness of your opponents' moves. Also be aware of the space around you, e.g when pony tail dude (soz dont know names) moves to attack your centre, you move back into the wall or you move forward to match his attack (which you end up losing). there is space to your left/right side (think about it :P). and dont listen to the wingchun puritans, do whatever works.
Another reason why I think WC is too "mechanical." This is why I practice IMA now, the trick is to be physically formless until the last mili-seconds..
I thought that was a decent sparring session. The spinning back kicks at that close range I personally wouldn't do though. I used to study wing chun but at the school I went to we NEVER sparred...and kicked very little. We concentrated more on sensitivity training, a little too much in my opinion. I developed good feel in my forearms but overall the training was lacking so I left.
that's because they're not palm heeling to the face, biu tze-ing, knifing the throat, aiming the tiegerk (sp?) to the nuts, or breaking any of the limbs. i'm sure any of that would definetely cause some serious injuries. interesting idea of sparring in a closed space. but then you have to reset the match to the center if someone's pinned to the wall. unless you're going NHB. but NHB isn't "light"
i realise that i need to bridge the gap, my inability to do so is because i am still relatively new to wing chun, and am just beginning to develop such skills, believe me it is something that i intend to work on dilligently from now on.
thanks for your contributions guys, when i can think of more i will post again!
Because you don't go inside, you are sitting in his kicking range and he is just picking you off. You strike and back off, when you should move in on contact. You just need more confidence.
Once he touches your hand, he knows he can kick you easily. He's measuring you up and you're giving him the tools. Notice that later in the clip, he is just out of range when you kick. Learn your personal ranges. Kicking like that to try and enter against a decent fighter just invites them in to take you out while your balance is temporarily compromised.
hey mate, i did some lung ying (dragon style) similar to wing chun, jus we got more swinging arms.. anyways.. jus a thought, you know how ur fwen loves to keep his hands open and is like right next to your hand... grab his fingers man, twist it... or another fing is HIA (hand immobalization attack) lap sao then ABC (attack by combination).. dunt be scared.. every1 is gonna get hit if we spar... but wat u want is a knock out hit.. take a few and jump in.. hope it dunt offend no one..
so far u guys are so right that i keep turning my back on olioh, the reasons... he is a very skilled fighter, and could take my head off at any point if he really wanted to... so me turning my back on him is very much connected to my pyschological fear of getting twatted in the face... or worse!!!
No disrespect, but olioh is NOT a very skilled fighter, nor can he take your head off...... unless you let him. You need to change your mindset, or you have lost before you've started. Besides, your just training. You need to test things out in your sparring. Don't worry about getting hit or losing, just learn to feel your Wing Chun.
I am the guy with the short hair, and star of the martials arts movie epic Kung Fu Loo Hustle, if you havent already seen it check it out today on you tube...
ok lets get down to business- my sparring, well, it is always interesting to watch yourself fight, when you are in the midst of combat, the action always seems far more intense than it looks on camera...
As I said, next time I will try and use more Chi Sau style sparring. I must also admit that I havn't been able to train regularly for the past year so I do not feel confident in controlling my opponent so I do not want to risk injuring my partner. I will try to spar with a more experienced partner next time so you might be able to comment on clearer techniques I will be able to apply (as I know they will be more competant in defending themselves - no disrespect guys ;) ).
Thanks for your comments davidsobell. I agree with what your saying (I'm the long hair guy haha). I don't think I am using Bong sau that much, I think I am using Lan sau or an elbow strike (from our Arrow Punch form). The reason I use it in this sparring is to reduce the risk of injury as the guys in these videos havn't been training even half as long as I have so I use bigger movements that are easier to see.
Also, the long hair guy relies on Bong a lot so try to use this against him by pinning the elbow, striking the ribs, flipping the elbow or to really damage him pull down on the shape to wreck his shoulder (not recommended as its training). I'll comment more when I have more time, I need to sleep, I've just been training. I still haven't filmed me yet because I didn't have anyone to film me training. I'll try and video some.
I'm so much more superior than you and my Sifu could kill yours...
But seriously, the guy with short hair should try and close the gap a lot more especially as the long haired dude is quick and confident with his kicks. He goes for non traditional kicks, almost Karate Kicks, not saying this is a bad thing but if he closed him down to Chi Sau range then he might be more successful.
nice to watch..but guy with short hair should try not to turn his back against his opponent..many time it happens.n i notice there's always first action - a kick then stops..and tries again, should keep going..once u r in range..and maybe stop tapping each other's front hand? =)
OK, before everyone starts flamming my wing chun, a few points:
1)I was mostly using Pin San style wing chun, next time I will try to use my straight body wing chun.
2)Not using left leg much so as to protect an injury.
3)Not using my wing chun hands once I had closed in to decrease the risk of someone getting a broken nose, next time I will try to use clearer techs such as laap sau and pak sau.
4)This was light sparring, a chance to try out certain things
i think this is a modified wing chun, it's quite different from the original one, but you guys seems to use so much on foot, and just relax your mucsles, dont contract to much, otherwise you will be too slow to block or strike people.

The short hair guy knows the other guy is superior. He's scared. The long hair guy is enjoying himself knowing the other one is powerless.

THIS VID WAS NOT TO SHOW HOW SUPERIOR ANYONE OR ANY STYLE IS.Training between friends.
Constructive criticism welcome.
