Despite this being used as an outer-suburban train for Glasgow, this would be an improvement over the equivalent "185"s used today - first because of the absence of diesel engines under the floor; second, the streamlining; third, the front-end corridor connection (allowing even distribution of passengers and access by staff); amongst other reasons.

However the North Transpennine route should have more intercity-like rolling stock instead.
