I seriously doubt they just pick random notes and stich together songs blindly, guitarists of this calibur usually know a thing or two about music theory.

Basically I think just listen to the music you like, and fuck what other people tell you to listen to or whats "good". Even if they do play random notes(and I agree they don't), I still like it, so i'm still gonna listen to it. "Good" and "Bad" don't apply to music. Opinion is everything.

everyone hears teh guitars playing offbeat to the drums and wanks over how unique the timing is. First of all - Sikth are fantastic, secondly listen to any sikth song and just tap a beat out (first beat of every bar) you'll see that they are "in time" they just elaborate the bars - good vid tho - awesome guitarists

i've always tries to write a cool but wierd tapping bit like that but i always fail.... Sikth have one in every song! WITH A HARMONY FOR EACH!

Make the riff in 1 key,
then tap the accidentals (notes outside the key)
Also, string skipping taps can give it a really cool effect.
Or hell! Just use the diminished scale.
