  • The beginning sounds scary it makes me think of metropolis the movie the rest of the song is nice and warm :)

  • This is an amazing song, from the opening tones that sound like a telephone engaged signal, it just hangs in the air like something from another dimension, unearthly and utterly compelling, the emotional anguish of death, decay and being forgotten is intensified by the understated vocals. This is simply a masterpiece!

  • I miss this Madonna.

  • Amazing song.

  • Does the meaning of this song has something to do with death? because it sure does paint the picture of death, I mean the lyrics..

  • Peace & peace people, no need to argue, just listen to the pureness of Madonna's voice and by the way this song is freakishly marvellous (:

  • Ray of light is an album for die for love <3

I'm falling in love with all this song

  • yesterday i was in an alternative shop and heard this song. i only got a few words because the other costumers were so loud. i searched for this beautiful song up to an hour and was so desperate because i couldn't find it. but then i was lucky, now i can't believe that it is possible to hear it again.

  • This song is scary at the begginning, if you turn all the volume for the first 8 seconds you can hear like a girl singing and then the song starts.

Then the noise repeats after "Im still running always"

  • You get bit that too? It gives me the worst goosebumps ever! Its like a the most terrifyingly beautiful bad dream. I want this at my funeral.

  • people stop arguing whether she's a poet or not! She has written many amazing songs with interesting lyrics. Not all of them but no one can deny she HAS great tracks with great lyrics! nuff said!

  • STUNNING :X

  • esta es guindilla del album creo yo la mejor de todas... y el mejor disco de su carrera sin dudas..

  • Rotting bones...

  • And I smelled her burning flesh

    Her running palms

    Her decay

    I ran and I ran

I'm still running away...........................That ending alsways gets me.

    ALL HAIL THE QUEEN!

  • @1asheler It's "her rotting bones"

  • @soundseeker63 Oh. Okay, I thought it was running palms. My mistake.

  • One of my favorite songs of all time... <33

  • I acknowledge Madonna's voice, however I never liked her music album ect. But this one is one of my favourite (ray of Light) from anyone :). It is like not Madonna just she sings, genuine

  • Absolutely STUNNING is what this album is ;)

  • and what have u done with ur life mclarenmerceds. I mean, she is madonna. Who are you? who? cant hear the nobodies!

  • GOOSEBUMPS ALL OVER :X:X:X

  • my funeral song right here.

  • PERFECT EVER

  • <3

  • Madonna is a poetess !

  • @xxxTIN0xxx lmao

  • Suck it :) lol

  • @xxxTIN0xxx the word is POET not poetess

  • @CAYOMluver POETESS= Female poet , moron! You need a dictionary !

  • @xxxTIN0xxx bitch sit the fuck down, no need to be so fucking rude. fuck you hoe

  • @CAYOMluver Yes there's no need to be rude, but what about you now? Fuck you too hoe!

  • @xxxTIN0xxx hoe hoe hoe, merry xxxmas

  • @CAYOMluver lmfaoo Fag fag fag! Fuck off and enjoy Madonna's music! Bye mother fucker ! lol

  • @xxxTIN0xxx tell your mom i said hi

  • @CAYOMluver Have you bought a dictionary? Ok ! Search for "Slut" you'll find .. Slut = CAYOMluver's mother! lmfaooo ..tell your mom "hi slut"! Bye GAYomluver ! lmfaoooo

  • @xxxTIN0xxx There's a certain irony in a Madonna fan being homophobic seeing as most of us are gay anyway.

  • @dtrez09 Madonna is definitely praised by gays but she's not only a gay icon! She's also praised and loved by straight people. My friends, sisters..they're all straight and they're Madonna fans. Anyway I'm not homophobic, I just say "war is war".

  • @xxxTIN0xxx

So she wrote the melody, text and produced it?

Sorry, but she hardly ever did anything by herself when it comes to music.

And who the hell uses the word "poetess"?? What's next, calling a female doctor a "doctoress" or a female pilot a "pilotess"??

Ever wondered how you're going to achieve gender equality by insisting on using female forms of nouns? That's coming from a guy.

  • @xxxTIN0xxx

She's not freakin' Bob Dylan you moron. Bob Dylan got the Nobel Prize. He may have lost his edge this last decades but he is still a poet.

And your point about homophobia or whether or not homosexuals or not are Madonnna fans really disqualifies you from any serious discussion.

I urge you to say the same thing in public and see people's reaction.

  • @McLarenMercedes I don't give a fuck on Bob Dylan, I don't give a fuck on homosexuals, I don't give a fuck on you and your irrelevant opinions...Madonna is a poet whether you like it or not, now go back sucking dicks and keep doing it for the rest of your life.

You dumb piece of crap LOL

  • @TheSolitaryHeart

You replied to something I wrote 3 months ago and I am a "bore"??

Better to be a "bore" than full of shit.

With the likes of you I wouldn't bother trying to make any sense of, rather I'd smack your faces. But since I can't do that a nice little flag goes a long way.

    You dumb ape.

  • This is a simply stunning song. Always brings me out in goosebumps. I never realised Madonna was capable of such emotional depth. William Orbit is a genius producer.

  • This song is definitely underrated. It has to be one of her greatest. The lyrics were so beautifully written, and beautifully sung. I feel like it says so much about her.

  • what does the word 'mer' mean?

  • @kara112inbox

I think it doesn't mean anything in English, I looked it up in French and it means ,,sea" So I think it could metaphoricaly mean deep.

  • And I smelled her burning flesh

    Her rotting bones

    Her decay

  • How is it possible that this song is so beautiful?! The instrumental is even eerier.

  • This is her most personal, eeriest song ever. Beautiful.

  • @XxwHiTeMoOnrIsEnxX If you are 14, which I doubt then seriously, piss off you aren't old enough to have an opinion.

  • @TheSolitaryHeart Just because somebody is 14 doesn't mean that person doesn't deserve to have an opinion. I guess you're to ignorant to see that that's what Madonna is against. You are no Madonna fan.

  • @jaymrgaga Actually, what she would say is that when she was 14 she knew nothing about life, which is true about everyone. Awwww bless, why don't you go and play on the swings or something....

  • @TheSolitaryHeart Being young does not make someone unable to have an opinion. That's completely ignorant and disrespectful. There's all this talk that children should respect adults. True, but maybe that respect should be reciprocated. Do no patronize someone simply because they're young. It's not impossible to be 14 and insightful. Whether this person is correct or not has nothing to do with their age. That's just narrow-minded.

  • @iHeartMADtv One day you will see. I realize now that half the shit I came out with at 14 what utter crap now.

And so will you one day.

  • @iHeartMADtv I'm seriously doubting you are 14, anyone can fake their age on the internet.

  • @TheSolitaryHeart Pardon me but, I never said I was 14. That was "XxwHiTeMoOnrIsEnxX" who you were debating with. I, am 19. I don't know where MY age came into play, but whatever.

  • @iHeartMADtv "Talk to the hand girlfriend". Watch it, I'm a Londoner.

  • @TheSolitaryHeart Haha okay, I was just telling you I'm definitely not 14.

  • @iHeartMADtv ;-)

  • @XxwHiTeMoOnrIsEnxX She will never do a song as poignant, deep or as direct as this. She is purely artificial. Why on earth did you come here to comment on her? Next to Madonna she is like a court jester.

  • and the earth took me in her arms.... leaves covered my face...ants marched across my back...black sky opened up...blinding me.... beautiful

  • 5 people were just jealous.

  • Why is everyone bringing the Gaga thing on every pop video? That's getting seriously annoying... I like her too but she just can't be as good as Madge and everyone knows it. Madonna will always be the Queen, no matter what! -3-3-3

  • This song is such amazing... i have not enough words for that! <3 you Madonna

  • @GeniusAmongTards Of course there was some attention-grabbing, name ONE major pop star who doesn't try and get attention. It's what popstars (including Madonna) do. But I think it was both an artistc statement and attention-grabbing. The idea was that she was going to be born on stage, so she couldn't be walking on the red carpet normally otherwise it would spoil the whole concept.

  • it's like listening to her/my diary..

  • @GeniusAmongTards It makes perfect sense though. She was talking about rebirth long before the egg, so I imagine that was her vision behind it.

  • @GeniusAmongTards the egg was symbolic of rebirth :)

  • CHILLING ..I loved this song sincw it came out long time ago..

  • masterpice of madonna

  • her most intimate song about her mothers death, just stunning - goosebumps

  • This came on the radio about three minutes after I got a phone call that my best friend from school had died in a plane crash....rips me to shreads every time....

  • This song stops me. Amazing.

  • I always thought this was her dying and leaving in spirit form, but not sure...

  • @troshs Wow i thought i was the only one with the same interpretation. Maybe this is what the song is about.

  • I have no idea, its just what I've always thought of when I heard it. The man that she cannot keep, obviously shes gone so she no longer is able to own him, how she gets pulled underground and then sees a bright light, and the end especially when she says she's still running away (as if she were a ghost reliving the moment over and over again.) Idk I'm weird but I took poetry class in high school and learned to think outside the box...even though I listened to this long before that class.

  • I love this song but, I really dont know the meaning...can someone help me

  • @MrNYCEyes I'm pretty sure in an interview with Oprah, right after the album came out, Madonna confessed that the song is about her coming to grips with her mother's death. Madonna was very young when her mother died and it deeply affected her deeply.

  • @The1Shann Oh ok...After listening to it again and again, I thought she was talking about her old self like if she saying that she can never go back....More like a sign of growth as a human.

  • @MrNYCEyes I think it's a sign of growth in the sense that her mother's death caused her to grow up before she was ready, while her running away deals with how difficult it is for her to face the truth. I remember her being very brave when she was discussing the song, Oprah looked teary-eyed. Madonna said something along the lines of this song and Little Star (about the birth of her daughter) being the most personal to her on this album.

  • This song is beautiful and haunting... Perfect way of finishing an iconic album.

Then back to the start of drowned world, to go through the journey again! :)

  • my favorite song of Ray Of Light. THIS is art.

  • This is a brilliant song.

I was stunned the first time I listened to it the day the album was released. At this point in my life, I can now identify with almost every lyric and emotion in this song.

  • ESTO es arte.

  • so much better than laddy gaga

  • @desertazul YEAH , THAT IS TRUE

  • The ending of this gives me chills. No other album has done that before. Love you Madonna!

  • Haunting, but stunning...

A perfect song at an end of a perfect record...

  • this song is so otherworldly and powerful, one of my favorites from her.

  • Sadly the forgotten song on Ray of light!

  • 1998... 12 years and still rocking!! yeah!!

  • Ray of Light is EPIC!!

  • I remember, when i listen this is music, when the music over, my sister was sleeping...

    But i love this one

  • THIS SONG TAKE U UP... BEYONDE THE UNIVERE(S)

  • i've been listening this song night to night for a few weeks just after the old lady turns the lights off and everything's quiet in the residence i live at.. every time i listen to it i think about my late best friend who was murdered back in 2004.

  • I really love this song...

  • bjork, massive attack, tricky, portishead, goldfrapp, emiliana torrini, bat for lashes, air... if i think that alla started after listining to this madonna album i can't nearly believe it

  • This song scares me a lot if you turn up the volume at the beginning you can hear a very creeping sound like a girl singing or something...

    Creeepy....

  • @SharnsiR this song takes me places in my head like very few others. Actually I only realize now the extraordinary impact it makes on me ! You know its funny, some of Madonna's songs are almost spiritual in their sound, and yet I guess most of her work is, shall we say very down to earth. Whether Mer Girl is the most beautiful song ever, is really hard to say, after all that is only my opinion. However Madonna looks particularly beautiful in the official 'Frozen' video and it is amazing...

  • thumps up if you love madonna

  • The most beautiful pop song ever recorded, epic doesn't sound like enough !

  • @raythenation better than Frozen???

  • its a little classic this song. only madonna could come up with this. this is my fave on the album.

  • love madonna <3 she has unique voice. and good lyrics

  • @ImALittleRedIndian i so totally agree with ya about what ya said about madonna i feel the same way

  • THIS IS ART

  • that song makes me cry.. it's so emotional

  • haunting. mesmerizing. a fitting end to the Ray Of Light journey.

  • That journey is so awsome.

    Madonna at her best.

  • @pixarian even though Has To Be would have been great also.

  • Genious!!! Madonna Forever!

  • The Gabor Szabo sample is so hidden

  • Quite an odd song.

  • This song sends shivers down my spine. I love it. Thumbs up.

  • this is one of my favourite songs, <33

and the more i listen to it, the more i think it's about her mother.

    anyone else think so?

  • gorgeous song

  • I think this song is perfectly for remixes because the almost song hasn't beat :)

    BTW,beautiful song :)

  • This is amazing, but so eerie.

  • this song makes me wish i was 18 again.. :(

  • BEAUTIFUL!!!

  • this song inspires me

  • The best emotional song ever! This is my favorite Madonna song! I hear it, when it's sky blue outside. When, I'm riding my bike in the night. It's just a perfect song for many reasons, for one is that it touches you.
