that sort of way for creating sanding sticks is really wrong and you are wasting about 30 to 40 % of the sand paper if i have to explain how to make better us of a finite resource you are not smart enough and should not use dangerous equipments
Dental picks by hand and dental burrs in a dremel flex handle or mini die grinder also work very well for detail, and you can usually find sets of used ones on eBay - use as is or if you are paranoid of used bits toss them into a cup of isopropyl alcohol first. All sizes and shapes are out there and being used they arent so agressive like new ones, and of course much cheaper and usable to carve wood, eggs, etc not just sanding and detailing. Of course dremel bits are another option for detailing

I also use emery boards from the dollar store. Comes in different sizes and very cheap.

i use those pointed diamond embre boards for sanding sticks, my moms got a few so i stole them from her lol
