Young, gifted and you know. Music is how you hear and enjoy it. One size does not fit all. I read some of y'all comments, are you serious? Pentatonic or bebop, you're still only dealing with several notes and accidentials. I love music. What's your story?
After you've been listening to a tons of music, a few accidental can mean the difference between day and night... Altered harmony gives the whole sound a different dimension by extending the "tone palette". You can "paint" very beautiful "colors" with chord extensions and altered notes. However, like I said, most people can't hear the "colors". But Eric is a great player tho. He can make the sax really sing with just five notes.
He's a very immature player. Absolutely no jazz theory applied - all pentatonic scales in the melodies of his tunes and in his improvisation. Just applying some theory behind the chord structure, rhythm and improv would improve his tunes considerably. Right now, his tunes are elementary, non-hip and downright cheesy. Eric just needs to work his craft and follow the players like Gerald Albright, Walter Beasley, Najee, Michael Paulo, Andy Snitzer, Kirk Whalum, Eric Marienthal, and so on.
@xPtkfgsx Interesting how you can't debate my criticism. I have no reason to be jealous - I'm just stating my opinion and backing it with some facts. You, on the other hand, are ignorant to this type of genre. The list of sax players I've mentioned play contemporary/pop/smooth jazz; however, totally blow the doors off of E. Darius. But of course, your untrained ear is unable to comprehend. So, you're the jack-ass!!
This type of argument is simply pointless. I am a musician. Through experience, I found that most people say 80 percent (I am being very generous here) have "untrained ears". Rarely do I come across "average audience" who can distinguish between pentatonic and bebop scales. In fact, some prefer pentatonic because it's more "song-like" where as bebop licks might sound too out for them. Real jazz is not for everybody, if they don't get it, don't bother. I've tried...
@dbsax007 Of course there are more talented sax players out there. It'd be daft to think Eric Darius is the absolute best musician alive. However, that doesn't, by any stretch of the imagination, make him a bad player. He has talent, and plays very well. Even if his style is a tad rudimentary compared to some of the jazz legends out there, it's enjoyable to listen to. You can't just judge music's enjoyability by it's complexity. The emotion poured into each piece is what makes his music great.
i wouldn't consider pick up the pieces as smooth jazz, but kenny g's version is no where near the best. if u want improv, look up candy dulfers version.
No, its not.The reason is that it doesnt have the most important element of Jazz:Improvisation. Its just pop music with some of the instruments that are used in common jazz music.Another big difference between Smooth Jazz and real Jazz is that every great jazz record is,even if its a "studio"recording,it is recorded with the whole Band playing live at the same time.Every Smooth Jazz record ive ever heard is recorded with seperated tracks for every instrument. One musician at a time recording.
Besides that, how could it be an evolution (i think thats what you mean by "evalution") of Jazz, if it only its only made to make money and lost every aspect of artfulness ? Its not art anymore, its a product, trying to fit the plain americans listening habit as good as possible.
Every Smooth Jazz track ever sounds the same, how could you never have noticed that ?!
well, if u put it that way, id say every old jazz track sounds the same epecially when they improvise all it all just sounds like jumble of crazy notes to me...

Im sorry, but you obviously dont have any idea what your talking about.
Overdubbing exists since the 1920s, and has been used since then (Wikipedia).
Do your homework next time, buddy.
The only reason real jazz artists dont use overdubs is musicality.
The main reason why "smooth jazz" sounds so dead is the absence of any spontaneous interaction.
