Kathryn Stockett is a hypocrite. She claims to be against racism, yet she ripped off her black maid, using her image and likeness without her consent and not paying her. In fact, the maid is suing Stockett.
@StoogeWatcher It's her brother's maid. And it seems like a bullshit suit to me. Even if the name and image is similar, the story takes place in the 60s the woman became an author. An author is allowed to take inspiration from her life. It would be awful if she wins this suit.
I grew up in SC and reading this was like going home. I can remember my father's funeral in 1966, seeing all the blacks standing in the church yard. I was so angry, knowing that he would not have wanted that. As a child, no one paid attention to my words but it changed me forever.
I think of something my Aunt told me. She lived in what would be called a northern city and worked as a maid. And she said the lady she worked for said you know Virginia we are friends, while she was down on her knees in the heat without air condition scrubbing the floor. When the lady left the room she said my friend Flicker. For those who do not know. In the 50's there was a TV show where a man had a horse name Flicker and the set com was called "My Friend Flicker".
I really enjoyed this book. I read it when it first came out. As an African American woman I was presently surprised that I really liked the book.
I respect the author because she use a bit of cultural deference. She didn't try to speak for the black people in the story and I didn't find it patronizing in her telling of the story. Great job.
I will buy this book based on this interview. I am a 32 year old black man and have heard many different stories from my parents very similar to what Kathryn Stockett is saying. It is really refreshing to hear a white woman be so honest about something this country doesnt want to necessarily acknowledge. Because she is such a white woman, she lends a lot of to the impact of racism because lets face it, many times if a Black person talks about it, they are labeled as playing the race card.
I am digging the Katie Couric black S&M fetish boots....( just wish she was wearing a black turtleneck to match those naughty boots) God....Female DOM'S are addictive....
