theres 6 of Theses shovels 2 steam 3 gas 1 Electric down the road at the scrap mill 1 of the steam ones work the eletric is over grown an 2 of the gas shovels art in pieces If I had the money and a permit id by the working one in a heart beat. ( I rem my Dad using a 30 back when I was 4... =') )
Like the fellow said, they used these shovels to remove rock & dirt from the Panama Canal after they dynamited huge sections of the rock that was some 45 feet deep. When the 1929 cascade railroad tunnel was built? They used these but not with steam. Fumes from fuel oil or coal would kill. They set the cranes up with high air pressure hoses to operate, as they did with the hole drillers for the dynamite blasts. That tunnel is used by the BNSF & AMTRAK to this day. Very nice video, thank you !
There were a few of these old things being used at independent gravel pits when I was a kid in the 50's. I can't remember a one with any of the wood "walls" remaining, however.
@4freespeech it still is a big deal, only kids these days unfortunately can't see them. let a group of elementary kids watch this machine, and i bet a good half will still get hooked!
ah the good ole days when equipment wasnt ran by wetbacks, and people actualy worked instead of cry about their ipod
