  • Can you imagine working as a firemen in one of these things in the middle of summer?

  • Like the fellow said, they used these shovels to remove rock & dirt from the Panama Canal after they dynamited huge sections of the rock that was some 45 feet deep. When the 1929 cascade railroad tunnel was built? They used these but not with steam. Fumes from fuel oil or coal would kill. They set the cranes up with high air pressure hoses to operate, as they did with the hole drillers for the dynamite blasts. That tunnel is used by the BNSF & AMTRAK to this day. Very nice video, thank you !

  • LOL if i happen to travel back in time, and end up stranded back in 19th century, i now know what job to look for!

  • I don't know about living steam Shovel in Russia :(

  • eww

  • It's Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel.

  • There were a few of these old things being used at independent gravel pits when I was a kid in the 50's. I can't remember a one with any of the wood "walls" remaining, however.

  • Makes me feel like a kid again,

way back before TV or video games

watching a real steam shovel was

    a big deal!

  • @4freespeech it still is a big deal, only kids these days unfortunately can't see them. let a group of elementary kids watch this machine, and i bet a good half will still get hooked!

oh, and operating one beats ANY video game!

  • @4freespeech how old are you?

  • Excellent example of a steam shovel in action.
