Ive just finished my course of 12 treatments. I was suicidal (42 yr old woman) I have always been depressed as long as I can remember. Now the treatments have finished I feel alive again and can function. The side effects of SHORT TERM memory loss and confusion were fleeting and worth it. I would recommend this treatment to anyone who has not received help from councelling or anti-depressants. Dont be scared to have it done.
I'm a grad student reviewing ECT literature. There is a lack of well-designed studies - ones with placebo-controlled trials and benefits seem to be short-term and mostly seen in elderly people with severe depression. There are possible side effects, including death, but the same is true of many treatments. I would not use this YouTube "ad" to buy ECT!!. But if I were severely depressed, had tried everything else under the sun to get better, I might try ECT with a trusted physician.
See, all these people are older. I'm 21 and need relief from chronic treatment-resistant depression. I'm thinking a VNS device will be better for me b/c I also have seizures. This procedure still kinda scares me.
@koochy79 This is wonderful. You must have had a long, hard road before deciding to go for ECT. People have been harmed by ECT, but people like yourself need to be heard, too. Those who are at their wit's end, absolutely desperate, need to know that ECT could work for them when administered by a very well trained, prudent physician/psychiatrist. Best regards!
@Shaitan051 the little twitches at about 14:00 are the actual "convulsions". they're just tiny because the neuromuscular junctions connecting the nerves to the muscles have been deactivated for a few minutes with a drug like suxamethonium. it wears off quickly and prevents injury.
The real seizure occurs in the brain, (very) basically the electric shock makes pretty much all the neurons in the brain fire off at once. for some unknown reason this helps improve depressive symptoms.
Tweet, Tweet, isn't it pleasant to hear the birds singing?
This account of ECT is so deceiving it's disgusting. ECT is a surgical procedure and This Particular Patient is fully clothed with shoes on his feet. This account of ECT is a "Total Farce"! I am a survivor and I can tell you, "ECT ain't a pretty scene, baby!"
I've suffered with depression most of my life. I've taken many different antidepressants over the past 20 years. Last fall 2009 I underwent 6 ect's. I struggled with short term memory loss for a month or two after the treatments. Eventually my memory returned to normal, my depression lifted, and for the first time in years I felt like life was worth living, For me, the benefits of the treatments far outweighed the negative effects.
This is crap!!! How can he sit there and talk when some people at my hospital dont even know their name after treatment, have to learn to brush their teeth again, or like myself was in such severe pain that I could not move for days. THIS VIDEO IS NO BETTER THAN THE MIDNIGHT AD ON TV TRYING TO SELL DIET PILLS!!! ALL LIES!!!!!!!!!!

This gives me hope... I'm scared to undergo ECT because I don't want to lose my memory, even though my chronic depression distorts it anyway.
