awesome love the DIY, i plan to emulate this into a full 8 scales and control it with a microprocessor. for the record though this is more a metallophone than a xylophone seeing as xylophones are made from wood. i was actually surprised that no one pointed that out...either case great job, where did you find the research on the harmonic vibration in order to determine the length of the pipe...
She has a cute laugh! :) She has a good daddy too! :) Seems like a lot of work, time & expense for a second grade project though! (Not saying it's not important or worth it) It just seems like a lot of work.
this 2nd grader just saved my physics grade. im in 11th grade and i will deffinately use this as my project...thank you so much. also maybe your life would go so much easier if you put the measurements in the description...cause i saw alot of repeat questions and they annoyed me, so they have got to be annoying you.
My daughter and I are gearing up to make one of these and found your video! Such a great job! I'm sure that--on top of the xylophone--the video was a project in itself! Thanks for posting this... you've inspired me to involve my daughter more than I had planned to. Excellent!!!!!
I have made the xylophone for my daugher but the sound is a bit off....needs to be tuned. i don't know how to go about it. If the instrument in your video is already tuned could you simply weigh each electrical conduit and post a comment on your results? Thanks
I don't have our xylophone to weigh the pieces. However, the key to getting good results is accurate lengths of each pipe. I did my best to cut the exact length.
thanxs my daugher just love watching the video and i will give it her tomorrow. Wthout knowing it this video has help me greatly. happy holidays to your family. thanx
Home Depot, Lowes, or any hardware store that sells 1/2" electrical conduit. Read the comments below the video and you'll see answers to all your questions. Good luck! It's easy.
you use a total of four rubber bands - two on the top, and two on the bottom. Just weave the pipes through the rubber bands so they're supported on the top and bottom. Watch the close-up part of the video.
Hi these basic materials are available in any Home Depot, Lowes, or other hardware store. Just buy 3/4" PVC pipe which typically comes in 10' lengths. You only need about 5'. The metal pipe is inexpensive electrical conduit - 1/2" is what you need. It too comes in 10' lengths, and you'll need most of it.
oh my goodness!!! i have been looking EVERYWHERE to find out how to make a xylophone, and who would have known that the best way to do one came from an eight year old!!! haha
The materials can be found at Home Depot or Lowes. Buy one 10' piece of 1/2" electrical conduit, and at least 5' of 1/2" PVC pipe and you'll need four of the same type of PVC elbows I used to connect the PVC pipe.
where would i find all the materials? i need to know because i am making a xylophone for a science project and i have no idea where to find the stuff!!!!
Thanks very much for these details! May I suggest that for those of us who may be a bit challenged to measure accurately to 0.5 mm ... and even more challenged to cut it precisely ... always cut the pipe a teensy bit LONG. Cutting it short makes the pitch sharp and there's no practical way to lower it. Cutting it long leaves it a bit on the flat side, then you can tune it up to pitch by grinding/filing the end a bit at a time.
How wonderful! I want to do this with my children! Too bad they're only 2.5 and 1. :) Maybe we can make one for them. :)
how do you get any accuracy in the notes? I noticed that you had almost an entire scale. I couldn't tell you the specific note names, but I noticed that the intervals were fairly accurate (to my rather sad ear). You were just missing the lower 'do'.
Bet it took first place! I'm building one for sure! Sweet tone and a sweet kid, the shot of the other kid's feet made me laugh too. And the edge-of-the-seat suspense -- just WAITING for that glass tabletop to shatter -- had me TOTALLY RIVETED! <G>
Hi, I actually missed one note, and it should be 8. Here's the lengths: Here's the length to cut the 1/2" or 5/8" electrical conduit (don't use copper pipe). I only have metric sizes: Cut the conduit to these dimensions (in millimeters): G - (Lowest pitch) = 258 mm A - 245 mm B - 230.5 mm C - 223 mm D - 210.5 mm E - 199 mm F#- 186.5 mm G - (Highest pitch) = 181.5 mm
Umm Can you tell me the
1. lengths of the A) metal pipes B) PVC pipes C) wooden mallet
2. and this is a great video and thanks for helping me with my 8th grade project

Hey, this is a great way to make a xylophone, but i was just wondering how far do you put the rubber bands apart so that u get the best sound?

The PVC length should be at least 12 inches. but it doesn't need to be exact.
