A lot of this is correct for the old days but a lot of it is just the experience of a good childhood. A lot of kids today and in the future will have many of these great memories. Its important to point out that a lot of things have changed and indeed certain parts of life are worse today then they were long ago.
However, I think the media is partly to blame for peoples view that we are all going downhill and Americans are losing morals.A lot of bad things happened back then but we had no idea!
I remember alot of these things from growing up in the 80's. We still didn't hear much of inner city poverty or gang violence. I heard about the 40's 50's coming out of the depression and people were, poor. But there was work to get out of that. Now, despite work, technology to help us;- there are drugs and violence and a war mindset that kids grow up with. When the grids are off;- what will kids today do?
If you wanted to interview/get an autograph by a celebrity, you had to get lucky by reading the newspaper/listening to the radio, not having an online site which made it very special.
You thought an 8-track tape was cool since it meant you could play pre-recorded music in a car for the first time.
There were only one or two screens at the local movie theater, and contained a newsreel, short, cartoon, and feature.
You feel B&W to Color TV is better than SD to HDTV.
I had forgotten all the great childhood activities. I experienced all of them but one and I was born in 1947. I teach third graders now who have never heard of so many things like rotary phones, no remote controls, typewriters, footnotes, and on and on!
These are selective memories. Yes, I do remember all these things. But for a larger number of people in the US it is an "Ozzie & Harriet" fiction. To have these memories means you are probably white, middle class and your family was not a victim of war or genocide where, as a survivor/refugee, you consequently lived in a damaged household. If you were black and in the South you were made to feel small every day of your life. If you lived in the North you probably carried the same burden.
This brought tears to my eyes as I remember that now long ago era... The world has changed so much & not for the better. Both of my parents are in Heaven & I miss them so much! I wish that I could get the chance to tell them "I love you!" one more time. I wish that there really was such a thing as a "Time Machine" because I would be the first passenger to get on it!
For the past 14 years, I have lived in a quiet residential neighborhood in a house built in 1926. The elementary school when I went in the 5-6th grade is about two blocks away. The Catholic church school is right around the corner. There used to be a Rexall Drug Store across from the church and a small Mom and Pop down at the corner. My neighbors are older with few kids. On a quiet summer evening, I can sit on my porch swing and recall how it used to be. Rod Serling would have loved it.
Thank you so much for the trip down memory lane!!! we being the grown-ups we are need to go back to a much simpler time in life and this video warms the heart!!! Life today is way to stressful!! thank you from the bottom of my heart for reminding of my childhood and all the wonderful friends I had~<3~
This song is "Lost In The 50's Tonight" by Ronnie Milsap. This is not to be confused with "In The Still Of The Night " by Fred Parris and The Five Satins, which is not the same as Cole Porter's. Check tem both out here on Youtube.
@rbettanomia As noted by Poppysgirl87, the song is 'In the Still of the Night,' (not to be confused with Cole Porter's song of the same title). There are cover versions by Santo & Johnny (instrumental) Paul Anka, Deborah Gibson, The Beach Boys and Boyz II Men. This version is by Ronnie Milsap (which should show up in the info box above, beneath the ratings).
Great, great memories - though it had more to do with childhood than "simpler times". We could also remember Lynchings, Wars, Dictators, the Rosenbergs, thalidomide, The Cuban Missle Crisis, assassinations, et al. It was being a child and being protected from those things that made that time seem innocent.
I didn't grow up in the 50's or 60's but I did in the 70's and 80's just before everything in life had changed. Most of these things I remember doing and I had a BLAST! I sure wish things were as simple as they were when I grew up. Thank you so much for making this! I love it! <3
I was a kid in the 40s and this was what it was like! We had no tvs. We listened to the radio! I'll never forget how the radios would be on every where you would go when Joe Louis was fighting for the heavyweight championship. Great times!
Thank you for posting this video. A trip down memory lane. I remember all of that! I remember only having 3 TV stations and being thrilled when we got a 4th TV station, when WE were the remote control for our parents. I remember when.....
I loved this! I't only 20, but I remember doing alot of those things as well, and i remember when computers starting showing up and you were cool if you had one. I remember when i wanted to go out and play, actually knocking on the door and seeing if they were home! Now i watch my younger brother, he texts everyone first so he doesnt have to go for nothing if there not home!
Showed this to my 11 year old son, his response : "I wish I grew up when you did !" He has basically been raised as an 80's child not a video game head. GREAT video! Thanks for the trip back :)
Thanks for posting this. What wonderful memories! Even the music was better back then. I feel sorry for the generations that have come after us. Every generation says that about the next generation, but life will never be the same as it was when we grew up during those times. I feel so fortunate and blessed to have been born when I was. We have paid a high price for technology. I want those simpler times back. At least I have my wonderful memories!
This was great. I really enjoyed watching this and it brought back many wonderful memories. I actually remember all of them mentioned, and it amazinhg how simple life was then and how many things we take for granted and can not do without now...Thanks for bringing back these wonderful times.
I'm 59 years old. I have 5 "children" ranging from 29 - 37 with 4 grandchildren. I sent this video off to them not through facbook, texting , just real old fashioned email...:^) oh my god how times change!
I grew up on the west Coast of Canada, kicking a can around for fun, chasing sea gulls and was gone ALL DAY Saturday. I arrived home tired, hungry, wet clothes and muddy. dinner was waiting. I even got to stay up to watch the Ed Sullivan show! I was asleep before my head hit the pillow!
trying to make a copy of this video, please help me....

Wait - if I had closed my eyes, how would I have read all that text?
I wish I had had my eyes closed when you told me to keep God in my life.
That ruined it for me.
Keep your God to yourself.

Remember when:
Fast food and junk food were OK (but not all the time)
Dinners were usually: Spaghetti, meat loaf, or casserols and TV dinners had to be cooked in a regular oven
TV only had thirteen channels (sometimes a few more)
Getting scratches and bruises was NOT a cause for Mom and Dad getting sued
You could ask a grownup for help and the grownup wouldn't be accused of being a perv for holding your hand
There was none of this everybody wins nonsense in sports
