TV was making in Roads, movie receipts were starting to decline. Why did the studios experiment with innovations wide screen technologies 4 channel stereophonic sound and gimmicks such as 3 D, electrical shocks (during the Tingler), etc. to lure audiences back to the Theatres

In re: the question as to why Newmar's bellybutton was covered. My guess is that this film was made in the late 50s/early 60s, which means that the film and all of the content was reviewed by the Hays Code guys in Hollywood. Meaning that it mattered how much a woman was allowed to reveal in a film (to not connote promiscuity).

For another example of this, check out Rita Hayworth's seven veils dance in Salome. Same issues there..
