Julie Newmar in her prime was drop dead gorgeous whether she appeared in B-movies such as Lil Abner or the t.v. series "MY LIVING DOLL" or her guest appearnces in "BATMAN" and to this very day, she is still drop dead gorgeous.
Another one of those s& t movies of the 50's --Hollywood's depicton of the Middle EAst --I find them entertaining and wonderfully campy. Plus they had to have made a lot of money--they kept making them.
Y'know, they really should've stopped her when she drew the knife, unless it was traditional for female assassins to dance towards their intended victims. Regular Black Widows.......
They did something similiar in THE CONQUEROR, but the girl who was dancing tried to throw the knife out of spite to Ghengis Khan.....
@msm2you Yes, I am in complete agreement. Lang's Indian Tomb Dance was scene falls into the same category, although Debra Paget costume was less authentic and from my point of view more visually appealing (although I am a lifelong fan of Julie Newmar.
@nazbites & @msm2you Nobody went to the movies in the 1950's to see correct history or period perfect dancing or listen to authentic ethnic music, etc. They went to see as much Cheese cake as the censors would allow. TV was making in Roads, movie receipts were starting to decline. Why did the studios experiment with innovations wide screen technologies 4 channel stereophonic sound and gimmicks such as 3 D, electrical shocks (during the Tingler), etc. to lure audiences back to the Theatres
A true Amazon woman! They should have tried to get her to play Wonder Woman's mother, on the tv show. She would have been a lot better than what they had (and better looking, too!).
In re: the question as to why Newmar's bellybutton was covered. My guess is that this film was made in the late 50s/early 60s, which means that the film and all of the content was reviewed by the Hays Code guys in Hollywood. Meaning that it mattered how much a woman was allowed to reveal in a film (to not connote promiscuity).
For another example of this, check out Rita Hayworth's seven veils dance in Salome. Same issues there..
@SonnyAmou And yet another example, consider that during all the years "I Dream of Jeannie" ran on television, you never saw Barbara Eden's navel either. Same reason. The film/TV industry was far more prudish then.
Julie is one of the most fabulous babes that ever lived. Six feet tall with legs that go all the way to the ground. Never took herself too seriously but was so smart that she should have.
the censors wouldn't allow her to show navel

I meet her once in the mid-80s. She was in NYC at South Street Seaport with a group of people. What a great figure she had, she also towered over me.

Julie Newmar is the perfect example of beauty not necessarily meaning skankiness. She is classy, bright and kind as well.
