What an absolutely incredible human being. Orson Welles' modesty is astounding. A man who directed an absolute masterpiece and wants nothing to do with it. He has such an aura about him.
Yeah, but its always been like that. I mean even back in the days of citizen Kane you always had those studios that made exploitation films and the like. I mean, just popping out cheap flick after cheap flick, oozing with nudity and well...haha i guess nudity was the only thing you could exploit in film back then but still, my point is that nothing has really changed, just the public's attitude.
@guthax20 The only thing that changed was the concent decree that allowed Indie filmmakers to play their films at theaters...then the studios bought the theaters again...which is actually ilegall as it goes against the federal competition act but no one says anything unfortunatly.
I've seen two Orson Welles movies, citizen kane and Touch of evil. Both stand apart as the most visually awe-inspiring movies i have ever seen in my whole life
I personally love Touch of Evil and find F for Fake and Chimes at Midnight dazzling, and really feel they are just as great as Kane. Orson himself rated the Trial and Chimes at Midnight his finest achievements.
Indeed--and let's not forget that he was a world traveller at 10 (sent off alone, btw), and whilst still a lad, attended several dinner parties, soirees, etc., etc., with the likes of George Marshall, Winston Churchill & Adolf Hitler...quite a life.
@dontleademsomuch Never ran a theatre company at 22. I managed a recording studio at 28. Never directed a masterpiece, but about 2 hours ago I gave birth to a masterpiece that stunk up 1/3rd of my house. Never fucked Rita Hayworth, but I did have sex with a former porn star. My life is going well. . . and one thing is certain- I don't wear a suit and tie and I don't work in some fucking boring office.
@rayjr62 You sound like a true never been wanna be. Congratulations for never wearing a tie, and never doing much else either. As for your smelly house--don't quite know what to make of that boast.
"Citizen Kane" was a very good movie and, as I understand, a revolutionary work of filmmaking. That said, I do not see why it has the reputation of the "greatest film ever." On what basis do the critics come to this conclusion? Not anything quantifiable, that's for sure. In my opinion, a film cannot be the "greatest ever": there are great films of all sorts.
Dude, don't ever listen those lists. Those lists are created because BLockbuster, Netflix etc. want to drag you into seeing "The Greatest Film Of All Time!" Honsetly how can "Greatest" be defined. For example how much better is Citizen Kane from Seven Samurai or The Bicycle Thief: 7%??? These lists are bullshit. I really do enjoy Citizen Kane, but still believe these lists are worthless.
@leroyinc The same reason many people label Jimi Hendrix number one. He affected everything that came after, and if you weren't there before it can be hard to realize how influential he was, simply because his influence became pervasive and therefore commonplace.
Who can you think is like Orson Welles today? No one.
