  • I watched this movie about a month ago, and just recently found out about the shins. I just now realized the shins is in this movie, and im pretty sure that concludes that this is the best movie ever.

  • What are you here for?

To promote The Shins of course, you?

I do love The Shins though. This movie just overstated New Slang to the point of silliness.

  • fuck my indie ass

  • Natalie Portman, want you marry me ?

  • I liked The Shins before Garden State.

  • @ryanmd1227 Well congratulations, the world is a much better place because you liked the Shins before Garden State. Would you like a medal? I'll make you one. It'll say "First place for succeeding at boosting his own ego over things that don't matter to humanity." You earned it.

  • @ryanmd1227 what a hipster comment

  • @ryanmd1227 Me too. I liked The Shins before Garden State also. But whenever I hear a song or band I like in a movie I don't know whether to yell "I found them first!" angrily, or go "Hell yeah! This my jam!"

  • @ryanmd1227 ha hipster ass

  • Natalie Portman is absolutely wonderful in this movie. As for Zach Braff, his body of work is so limited. I wish he had done more projects, but he's still young.

  • Brilliant song and specially brilliant lyrics. The music is so nostalgic and atmospheric, and the lyrics just add another layer with its bitter words that have captivated me because of how much I can relate to.

  • @voltsfabian *cough* hipster

  • @423musicfan Hey... those are just my feelings about the song. They have nothing to do on what other music I listen to.

  • She tells the truth.

  • this song changed my life, I swear

  • Cringe.

  • They really will change your life, I swear

  • i always think its hysterical how uptight and angry hipsters get when you tread in their territory. for a group that constantly promotes individuality, they sure do have a ton of rules. youre not allowed to mention a band by name...you shouldnt show them in a movie...you cant enjoya band if it has more than 3 followers...shuuut uuup! comedian jimmy norton says it best...the reason hipsters are sickening is because they refuse to admit what they are. everything about what they like is shrouded

  • in mystery and clouded so that they can keep this super hip secretive look to themselves. shut up and just enjoy whatever it is that you like without having to advertise that youre a hipster without actually saying it because that would be un-hipster like....ugggh!

  • @Breezer28e Jim Norton is an idiot and he looks like a fucking turtle.

  • this was a great movie! loved how they used coldplay and the shins!

  • 0:33 boom.

  • i know i might sound like an idiot, but is that the guy out of scrubs??

  • @ripper497 Yes, yes it is, he wrote and directed this great movie.

  • <3 the shins!!

  • this scene is awesome

  • zach braff.. have a man crush on that guy

  • Loved this scene... remainds me of someone very special to me

  • As beautiful as a nice Jewish girl can get that would be NP.

  • thats so awesome! i love the shins

  • THIS SONG IS SO GOOD !!

  • @MultiLordHelmchen New Slang by The Shins

  • BEST SCENE =)

  • meh... as if you'd get hit on by a chick like that in the Doctors

  • @c001i0 It's not a doctors office it's a shrink lol

  • Garden State, it's a brilliant film with a brilliant soundtrack

  • this song DID change my life!

  • don't know the movie :( but i have to see it!Zach Braff AND Natalie Portman!

    how old is this movie?

and i don't know the song too.

The Shins - ? whats the name of the song?

  • @BigBang214 new slang. its an amazing song. and i know! its a great movie, zach braff is great.

  • @BigBang214 Movie- Garden state

The shins- New slang, and they play caring is creepy in the movie

  • Whoa, that's the first song I've ever heard by them.

  • Garden State is a very well written movie. The choice of music, plus the acting and story and just amazing. Excellent movie!

  • @spacefaceification fuck u too it's a great film

  • @sparkyinbath fuck u then nobody cares about ur shitty little lif

  • I really liked that song when it came it. I had it on my ipod for a while but then i got rid of it because i needed more space. So it didn't change my life that much.

  • What song

  • @crialesv New Slang. :)

  • (newspaper reads- Man kills himself after watching Garden State)

Peter- :O It could have been me!

  • this song HAS changed my life.

  • non ho capito una beata mazza

  • I love this film, this scene is my favourite. <3

  • Waiting for a friend my ass.

  • I think instead of whining how things become "more mainstream" you should feel happy for the band you like, that they can reach a wider audience now. I mean, if they didn't want that they wouldn't have agreed on letting one of their songs be played in a movie, right?

  • Comment removed

  • Natalie Portman has the cutest smile

  • I'm sorry I lack to see the greatness in this scene.

  • @spacefaceification thats just cuz you probably havent seen the movie...go watch it, its beautiful!

  • @spacefaceification That's because this film is a load of old arse.

  • Oh shit I think I just fell in love with Natalie Portman... This isn't good

  • @Jmswlks is there something wrong with you? You feel ridiculously strong with the feeling that a made up 30second scene in a movie is the cause for all shit that's happened in the world calm the fuck down man! Jeez you need a life seriously you could probably just wrote an entire fucking essay with that crap! Ps your history class must be shite if that's what your learning mate

  • @macleodcalum69 Fuck off!!!

  • @Jmswlks Pretty easy solution, don't like it well then don't watch it. I also think you should respect other people's opinions and restrict from namecalling. Very childish.

  • She should have just said "This is 'New Slang' by The Shins, and it's a hip indie song that will make us seem cool and will probably rocket into the charts now because all the wannabe hipsters watching this movie will run out and buy it so that they seem cool like us, when actually we're just a couple of mainstream Hollywood stars. You star on 'Scrubs', one of the biggest shows on television, and I star in mainstream Hollywood blockbusters and do nude photoshoots in magazines. Aren't we cool?"

  • @Jmswlks ok.

  • @pw632313 OK? That's all you can say? Don't tell me you buy into this "hip" "indie" crap. You're a sheep.

  • @Jmswlks calm down bud it's just a movie.

  • @pw632313 Just a movie? JUST A MOVIE??? This "indie" film from 2004 is the single most influential thing of the last seven years! This scene is the reason why the world is in such trouble right now!!!

  • @Jmswlks yeah this movie is clearly the reason why the world is shit. you are intelligent

  • @pw632313 It is!!! This scene is singlehandedly responsible for women being raped in Bosnia, and for the civil unrest in the Middle East!!!

  • @Jmswlks wow you have opened my eyes. how could i be so blind. you sir are not only a scholar but you are above the status quo in intelligence and how you perceive the world.

  • @pw632313 It's a fact! This scene was the worst tragedy since 9/11. They even teach it in history classes!

  • @Jmswlks damn i must be behind on my history courses. thank you for informing me.

  • @pw632313 Spread the word that this scene was the reason the Chilean miners got trapped last year!

  • @Jmswlks believe the Shins want only people who've heard they're music from...I don't even know what's acceptable in your terms! Let's say...the radio? Okay well since the radio only plays "mainstream" stuff I doubt they'd play much of the Shins. Do you think the Shins would like that if nobody heard the music they produced 'cept their "die hard" fans like yourself? I HIGHLY doubt it. Stop making a troll/ass/fuck/douche/shitbag/idiot/numb nuts (etc.) of yourself. UNLESS, you like it when people

  • @xDeadMisfitsx That wasn't my point! My point was that this crappy movie is trying to make itself look "hip" by featuring an indie band. It would be one thing if they just featured their music, but for her to actually name-drop them...it's so blatantly desperate! "Look at us, we're hip!"

  • @Jmswlks hahaha yay more trolling!!

  • @pw632313 I'll never stop, bitch!

  • @Jmswlks That's a stupid reason...so no movie can use indie/underground music without it trying to be hip? Dumb. I'd rather hear this some stupid hiphop/electro shit. Yes, she was nude in one movie...uh oh! Whore alert! Dumb. I'm sorry I'm human? I don't do everything correctly and perfect! Not obviously, dude...it's funny how big a troll you are. You keep wanting a reaction from me don't cha? Well here it is. I actually hate Scrubs btw aka don't love Braff. Have I fed you enough troll?

  • @xDeadMisfitsx Wow, who pissed in your vagina?

  • @Jmswlks (cont 6) think less of you and feel no respect towards you and sorta wish you would crawl back into the abyss you came from.

  • @xDeadMisfitsx Boo-fucking-hoo!!!

  • @xDeadMisfitsx Don't feed the troll man, he doesn't understand :)

  • @Jmswlks hahaha i will

  • @pw632313 Thank you!

  • @Jmswlks It's pretty funny how ignorant you are being. Because this film, was released as a low budget indie film, and you are hating on it for being "wannabe indie and hip". It is actually just like saying that The Shins are such wannabe "hip" and "cool" for making underground music.

With your "underground becomes wannabe underground" attitude, you have effectively taken hipster to a whole new fucking level of insanity. congratulations, you are clinically insane.

  • @hujnbds Uh, no...as much as they want you to think that this film is "low budget" and "indie", it's not. And you now how I know? LOOK AT THE FUCKING STARS!!! Natalie Portman is one of the biggest movie star in the world! There is no way that she wouls be associated with anything that is truly indie! And Zach Braff, at the time of this film's release, was one of the biggest TV stars because of "Scrubs". I don't care if he made the movie himself, or if he didn't spend much money doing it. Cont'd

  • @hujnbds It doesn't mean a movie is indie just because the star of the movie made it himself and didn't spend a lot of money. The fat that this film stars two of the biggest movie and tv stars in the world, and the fact that it was advertised on EVERY FUCKING CHANNEL when it came out PROVES it's not indie at all! For Christ's sake, it was advertised on the E! channel when it came out! And now they actually show this movie on E! Do you think that superficial, shitty channel would show indie stuff

  • @hujnbds This movie is an EXTREMELY lame attempt at trying to appear "hip" and "indie" when it's just the opposite. "Hey, let's take two of the biggest stars in the world and put them in an 'indie' seeming movie where they play awkward, quirky characters who listen to indie rock bands. Wouldn't that be cool???" If you think that this is truly indie, YOU ARE A MORON!!! They are huge stars, the movie was advertised everywhere, it's now being shown on E! of all channels, and they had to name drop

  • @hujnbds They had to name drop The Shins! A truly indie movie would NOT feel the need to actually say the name of an indie band! They would just play their music in the background. God dammit, this is such a fucking lame attempt to seem hip and cool! "It's The Shins! I'm listening to The Shins! Aren't I Cool? Listen to The Shins! It will change your life! Oh, I'm so quirky and hip! I make overexaggerated statements to be 'ironically cool'. Look how 'indie' I am." IT MAKES ME FUCKING SICK!!!

  • @Jmswlks dude...why do you care this much? lol

  • @jfitz1431 Because music is a big deal to me, and I hate seeing it raped like this.

  • @Jmswlks I don't know if someone has covered this yet but Zach Braff wrote this movie and included multiple Shins songs because they were/are one of his favorite bands. Natalie Portman had nothing to do with it.

  • @pearljammer13 Zach Braff raped the Shins! I will never forgive that bastard for raping them like that!!!

  • @Jmswlks He definitely did rape them by introducing them to a huge amount of people and increasing their fan base exponentially. What a jerk. You're totally right though man, movies shouldn't be allowed to have any music in them unless its an original score.

  • @pearljammer13 That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying he exposed them to the WRONG audience. The kinds of hipster wannabe audience that will listen to The Shins just to be cool.

  • @Jmswlks Whatever bro I'm definitely not in the mood to argue on youtube, all I'll say is if the music is good just enjoy it, who gives a shit who else is listening to it. The Shins are so good that almost anyone that is exposed to them will appreciate how satisfying and great their music is.

  • @pearljammer13 I bet Natalie Portman doesn't even like them. She probably listens to Lady Gaga!

  • @Jmswlks Highly doubtful, she went to Harvard. She probably likes Ray Lamontagne, Fleet Foxes or something similar. Probably has a thing for Serge Gainsbourg too. Girls like her love really pretentious folk/indie rock. Stuff you'd hear on Pitchfork.

  • @ShivaTheAuspicious Figures. Stupid pretentious wannabe hipster cunt.

  • @Jmswlks what makes me even more sick is your need to have to be the indie hipster police and start pointing out that this movie is breaking the unwritten hipster rules that no one shall speak of. enjoy the movie for what it is and shut it. who cares if they name drop. in a real life situation that is exactly what would happen if he asked her what she is listening to, god! what was she supposed to do as a true hipster? tell him "no i cant tell you who this is or they might get too big"

  • @Breezer28e Wow, you're really pissed. It's so fucking obvious that they name-dropped The Shins in this movie to appear that they have "indie cred" and that they're "hip" and "cool". They're not. It's a lame attempt by mainstream Hollywood stars to appear "hip" and "indie". It's the same exact thing as when Zooey Deschanel mentioned The Smiths by name in "500 Days Of Summer" and then sang part of one of their songs. It reeks of desperation and it makes me sick.

  • @Jmswlks zach braff actualy listens to indie music stop being such a fucking elitist bitch your not cool bro

  • @Cr3w96 Zach Braff is a fucking faggot.

  • @Jmswlks Actually this movie started the whole Shins bandwagon jumping

  • @DrZoidberg15 I loved them before this. Fuck Zach Braff and his unfunny show Scrubs that never knew if it wanted to be a comedy or drama!!!

  • @Jmswlks

    So much anger ... haha

  • @thetrax91 So much gayness...haha.

  • @Jmswlks That was the idea. It was a comedy-drama show.

  • @LeeMan00 It didn't work as a comedy-drama. It was either too over-the-top with the "quirky" nonsensical comedy, or too melodramatic with the drama. It was fucking bipolar and it didn't work.

  • @Jmswlks Sounds like you're not a fan, so you see it as bad. I can respect that. I like the but won't go and say it was perfect or the best. I honestly think its a good show and catch reruns of some episodes and get enjoyment from it. If you can't get enjoyment from it, forget it and find a good show.

  • @LeeMan00 Okay. :)

  • @Jmswlks are films not allowed to use indie music? cause thats the vibe i'm getting off of your comments.

  • @pw632313 Fake-ass poser movies like this shouldn't use indie music to try to make themselves appear hip and cool and edgy! It's phony as hell and it pisses me off!

  • Comment removed

  • @Jmswlks after having read your little Elle MacPherson incest conspiracy, i know for a fact that you are just trolling us. Come on man, you are taking this joke kinda far. Surely, no one can be this crazy?

  • @hujnbds No, I'm dead serious about this, just like I'm serious about the Elle MacPherson thing. A person can be into several things, you know.

  • @Jmswlks Now, that is what she said. Immature i know, but i couldn't let the opportunity fall.

  • @patlfc27 That doesn't make any sense, douchebag.

  • There are so many fucking things about this scene that I hate. I can't even name them at all. They think it's "hip" because the characters are so "awkward" and "alternative" seeming. It's bullshit. They're both mainstream Hollywood stars trying to seem "hip" with all this indie stuff, but it's not working. Not at all. Phoniest goddamn thing I have ever seen in my life.

  • Oh, her smiles while he listens to the song are so "quirky" and "random" and "cute". What a goddamn stupid whore. There is not one single realistic thing about this song. "Quirky, cute, alternative, indie" girls like her do NOT exist. But Natalie Portman is a slut in real life, and that's what does exist! Then these fucking sluts do scenes like this to make it look like there are girls who will just randomly talk to some loser somewhere, when actually they're too busy sucking cock at home!

  • She probably listens to Lady Gaga and watches One Tree Hill, and then "tweets" about it. Stupid fucking mainstream whore, just like every other goddamn one.

  • Oh, it's so "cute" when she says "Conundrum!" What a stupid fucking whore. A slut like her would never listen to a talented band like The Shins in real life. She's too busy fucking in her movies and getting knocked up in real life by whatever asshole dickhead she's banging this month. Stupid cunt.

  • And I'll bet you a million dollars that Natalie Portman never even HEARD of The Shins before she made this movie. She's about as big of a mainstream Hollywood star as you can get, whoring herself out in pretty much every movie she makes. She probably listens to mainstream pop bullshit in real life, and they have her here playing some "hip" "alternative" "indie" girl. It's fucking bullshit. Completely unrealistic and completely fucking stupid!

  • @Jmswlks (cont 4) Natalie Portman has no sex tapes or hasn't done any nude photo shoots. Once more, you must feel like a dumbshit to call a women who stars in a movie about sex and has a child a whore. Dude seriously stop with the "they think" you can't read minds, don't be a smart ass. I love fans like you! You basically say, "OH! I don't want new fans of the Shins cause if they didn't hear them like I heard them, they're fake fans!" How they hell do you think the Shins like that? Do you really

  • @xDeadMisfitsx You're the dumbass. Do a search for "Natalie Portman nude" and see what you find. Sh'es a mainstream whore trying to seem like a "hip indie chick". It's bullshit.

  • The whole "This song will change your life" line is supposed to be some kind of "hip exaggeration" that they think will make them seem cool. Like in movies when some "hip" deadpan character makes a bold exaggerated overstatement in a dead-sounding voice, they think it's clever and hip. It's not. It's stupid and reeks of desperation. Fuck this movie and fuck Zach Braff for making it.

  • @Jmswlks If you hate the movie/actress/actor so much, why comment on it? Why note write it in a notebook so people don't have to read your comment, yet if written in a notebook, it's still written and escaped your mind. To say Natalie Portman is a whore is such a ludacris comment. Really? She gets pregnant once, how do you think babies are made, stars in a movie about sex and now labeled a whore? You, sir, are an idiot. Paris Hilton is a whore...porn stars are whores, but Natalie Portman!? WHAT!

  • @xDeadMisfitsx Learn how to spell "ludicrous", you fucking idiot. "Ludacris" is how the rapper's name is spelled, and you think that's how the actual word is spelled? It shows the culture that you're a part of. Idiot.

  • God, I hate when movies do this. I hate when some "hip" indie movie has to name-drop a good indie rock band to make themselves appear even more "hip". And the song isn't even that great. Why the hell does she say it will change his life? No song can change a person's life, especially not the first time they hear it. This is such a blatantly obvious attempt at trying to appear "hip" and "cool". What a bunch of bullshit. "Look at us, our movie features people listening to non-mainstream bands!"

  • @Jmswlks 1. Please stop trolling 2. Uhm, well Zac Braff wrote/directed/acted in this movie, he also picked the soundtrack. He must like this song so he decided to add it in, or he thought it fit. No reason to cry about it and complain. She says it will change is life because that is a saying. She doesn't literally mean "oh! If you listen to this song, every women will want you and you will get rich!" Don't be stupid, I know there's a brain in that silly head of yours! How the hell do you know wh

  • @xDeadMisfitsx Wow, you must really be in love with Zach Braff.

  • @Jmswlks (cont 2) at they thought! Maybe they didn't put it in to make it seem cool, but just because the character is really up beat and positive and really enjoys the song, so in saying "it will change your life" it makes the song sound really interesting and it may make him like it a little more. Why do you keep saying, note not taken from exact content, but you're hinting on it, "I know exactly what they were thinking when they wrote this!" It makes you seem like a smart ass and a jackass.

  • @xDeadMisfitsx It's obvious what they were trying to do. Stop pretending otherwise.

  • @Jmswlks you really made 8 posts hating on this film and natalie portman, who you know nothing about?

    you are a fucking loser.

it seems you wish that no one else but yourself should listen to indie music.

HAIL THE KING OF ALL HIPSTER CUNTS

  • the script:

    -andrew puts the headphones-

    *music*

-sam being dramaticaly cute for 30 seconds-

    end.

  • New slang *-*

  • god this scene is lame

  • Amazing scene, love it!

  • smile-stop-smile-stop and wait, i love her smiles

  • what song is it?(:

  • @laugableandwat New Slang by The Shins.

  • wait.. noisy[1:02]?i thought it was nosy. haha. Great scene!

  • This is the kind of moment that people hope and dream for every day they exist out there somewhere, thing is you can't plan them they just happen. Until we experience one we can only hope and dream of them and stay open to the possibility.

  • This Scene changed my life.

  • Lol have u seen the rickroll version of this?

  • Natalie Portman is Utter Perfection.

  • @groar92skatrdinasour dude, come on

  • @Morphinos Complete and utter perfection and I emphasize.

  • it did change my life.

  • I like how this moment is like an awkward advertisement, lol.

  • in movie:

    What are you listening to?

    The Shins!
