I've mentioned in other posts, so I'll do it again. I'm an Air Force veteran and spent over 10 years cooking. Doing it in the military is the best thing, unless you're lucky enough to get a job with the state or government as a Wage Grade cook, which usually pay 40 to 60k a year, not including overtime. Otherwise the food service industry is very ugly, low pay, very hard work, high turnover, vile bosses and coworkers. And I'm talking about 4 and 5 star restaurants and culinary grads!
Funny this is an MOS that is very stereotyped and looked at as the lowest of low in the military. Thing is, this is THE most important job in the military. I love the cooks. I'm an Infantry medic, and I can't tell you how happy I am when I see a cook after being out in the field. Go get em' 92G!
@Rangerleadtheway44 Yeah I bet in the feild the cook has a ciggaret hanging from his mouth and saying "It's been made with love" and flings the food on the tray and says"Next!"
I do this shit and honestly it is a hard ass fucking job. You don't get weekends or holidays off. You work your ass off at lower ranks and are shitted on by most other people due to your MOS being frowned upon by many. it is like having 2 seperate jobs you cook and then you got to do the other bullshit in your unit. Yeah fuck that shit, most of us hate this MOS and right now unless your NCO level you can't re-enlist in this MOS currently due to being overmanned. It looks "easy" but it isn't
@DraimanBelieve i was a cook in the Army from 1982 to 1994 it was some good days and bad. Mostly BAD in the field we never rested well. In Garrrison we ate good but never got any holidays off. But it was an adventure
@larine824 yes, i sure do. Number one thing in basic training: stick it out, and listen to your drill sergeants. For AIT: pretend you know nothing about food service, and study hard and score high on the tests and pay attention to the instructors. Hope this helps!
dude trust me on this one. u r going to hate ur MOS as a cook. u wake up at 0500 to start cooking breakfast. then at 0645 u start serving breakfast. at 0815 u got a 30 min break. from there u got start for lunch which begins at 11:30 to 1:00 pm then from there u clean and cook u get another 30 min of break. form there u cook for dinner which is 1630 to 1800 and then from there u start cleaning and u clean kitchen... BIG ASS Kitchen and clean and throw thrash away.. DONT GET THIS MOS U WILL HATE
@pcortes1987 That depends on what dfac you work in. Some of the ones I worked in, we didn't even get a break, worked 16 hours Monday-Friday and 12 hours on the weekend (12 days on, 2 off). Plus keep in mind you get paid the same as all other soldiers, you just work twice the hours. If you're lucky enough two work in a Dfac that has two shifts, you will work morning shift from 5 until maybe 2 or 3, but don't make any plans, you get to go to the motorpool for more work.
The president's chef is a sergeant, this is a good MOS for culinary students or people who like to cook, i dont see it as sad or pathetic - all jobs in the military are important rolls that need filling
@SoldierCyfix I was just joking :) why would i be watching this if i dont like cooking? as soon as i finish college i'am signing up :P its hard to display a joke on youtube ::)
I am a 92G with a deployment to Afg, and I was definitely not in a guard tower. It was 50/50 in my platoon on being on base defense for the FOB, or out at the fire bases feeding infantry. As for Low GT scores, sure you don't need a massive GT score, but I have a 126, and the average in my platoon is around 120. I'm not saying that it's that way Army wide, but that's well above what is needed to do ANY job in the Army, including Military Intelligence, the worlds best oxymoron.
lol this is the mos for people who have low asvab scores...you should see the cooks at fort bliss....you wonder how they even know how to open their own car doors
dont waste your time in this field KBR now does all the cooking
if you deploy you will sit in a guard tower your entire deployment or you will run convoy security like i said civilian contractors will be doing your job for 4-5 times what they would pay you to do it for so you can go be a security guard
who cares? this my mos but idc because all i want is the 51,000 dollars im guarenteed after my term from the gi bill an gettn meh a place an then well thats all i need lol
This is all that was left for me. I wanted 21B but nooooo, wasn't avaliable. So all the working out I've done over the last 7 months is wasted...wait no I can use it to carry sacks of potatos.

2. I've noticed from watching these vids, alot of the food is pre-made. Which of the branches does N-O-T make pre-made food, but cooks & bakes from scratch??
3. Do all of the branches teach u how to BAKE from scratch??
Omg! Me and my boys be fucking with the cooks all the time! What kind of shitty are you to join the military as a cook? I am a grunt we just like to fuck with them. We are still one big happy family though. Still good friends but you will get shitted on by others for being a cook lol

It's not a glamorous MOS, but don't forget someone has to make that food so soldiers can eat. These guys put in hard hours. Imagine cooking in 120+ degree heat in the field for 500+ pissed off and hungry grunts in a windy and sandy tent.
Werlinger1988 also has a good point- you control foodstock once you get some rank. That pull can come in very handy.
of the 8 years as a specialist refusing to move up rank. ( You like cooking? go to school and be a chef and make 6+ figures!) 92G are for losers! lmfao. I know cause I am one of them. Don't do it!
yeah it sucks when you bout E-5 and below. when you hit that e-6 and above it mostly turns into signing for rations and sitting around. Plus we are one of two MOS that dont get messed with, medics being the others. once you find out how much pull you actually have.
It was all work, so much work. I paid my dues to my country. 7 day 17 hour schedules during deployment with only every other weekend off in garrison with mess sarge being strict yet I was dedicated, hard working, and honorable achieving medals most soldiers don't, becuase the officers recognized my hardship in serving my country men.
