  • I'd like to see what would happen if keith moon went against this guy or the drummer from Nile.

  • How could anyone ever be better than BUDDY RICH??????????????? Immmmmmmmmmmpppppppposssssssible!!!!!

  • i love this video thanks so much

  • I went to a BR drum clinic hosted by my music store as a kid and bought one of the cymbol stands and cymbols that he used. They were Zildjian.

  • Get this DVD. It is well worth the price of admission. Play the slow motion stuff on West Side Story after he brings the band back in when he completes a solo. The answer as to what the heck his left has was up to is displayed in all it's glory.

  • buddy was sooooo far ahead for his time!

  • Looks very informative. Unique series. Where can one find it in Canada?

  • God damn!! What powerhouse drumming!! Does this groove,or what?! I miss you Buddy!!

  • I bought this video,it was worth every penny!! Awesome!

  • There are several recordings of the Pete Meyer's arrangement of Love For Sale out there. This one is at the top. It is more aggressive than the original from "Big Swing Face". The 1985 version of "Live From King Street" suffered from what sounded like a muffled mike and too many clams.

  • Yeah WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW

  • wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

  • i play drums and coomment on utube videos blah blah blah thts my opinion and its absolutely right blah fuck yall cept buddy boy

  • Damn what a number-! Buddy drives that band like a damn freight train-!! I am not a musician, but ive been watching buddy on the tonnite show since I was a kid, and Ive never seen a half ass effort, with buddy its always max effort, even after a heart attack--what more can you ask from a guy-??!! A freind of mine saw buddy in chicago years ago and came back in awe. Buddy and this band really knocked this number out of the park, sorry he wasnt the best guy, but he was a hell of a stick man!

  • the only drummer who i watch with such a pleasure except Buddy is Dave Weckl

  • Haha did anyone else catch the Jimmy Heath quote in the trumpet solo? A little bit of "gingerbread boy". Great performance by a great band. They just have such an energy and a sparkle to them. I think too many people forget that music needs that energy and sparkle. That's why midi hasn't replaced us all.

RIP Buddy. Thanks for the good music you gave us all.

  • Buddy was in a class all by himself. The very best ever, and it is not even close.

  • Haha! The guy said ''If you want to play along'' ........ Haha! Walking on water would be easier.

  • Now that is some kick butt big band jam! Ive always thought buddy was one of the top few one could call "best" drummers of all time - he is so fast polished and powerful and he played like his life depended on it until the day he died, RIP Buddy

  • i SWEAR buddy rich was a voice on toy story.

  • @KurdtKobain09 idiot he died before the movie came out

  • 0:47 LOL

  • Poppin' trombone section -- Rick Stepton, Conrad Herwig, Pete Beltran. Rick & Conrad on Earl Williams 6's -- THE sound.

  • heres a simple way to tell dumbasses like you that say things out jealousy or whatever reason about people who have unique talant and bottom line will be cooler than you ever will be,so shut the hell up.any real drummer, musician, even if he they didnt like him, would still respect him as a musician and wouldnt write ignorant things on posts bout them.your the fat of having a democracy, jus unneeded, unwanted waste, real musicians keep on jammin

  • Steve Marcus was the lead tenor player with Buddy for a long time. He was also in the BR Big Band when they did the first BR Memorial Scholorship gig at the Wiltern years ago. Buddy's Ludwigs sound killer BTW.

  • Can someone PLEASE tell me the name of the lead sax player? Dude is in EVERY recorded Buddy Rich Band. I think he deserves some props ! ! !

  • Fresh water bats and austerity measures. Bad grimmaces and odd, hunched body postures. Anger at the band and cursing out the frizzled hair pieces like a spoiled brat.

Then Travis Barker came on the scene and changed drums forever.

When Travis hits the stage and his drum set flips upside down and he jams, you can hear the screams of the crowd and see the frenzy and tears in the eyes of adoring young chicks.

This is the power of TB, this is Travis Barker unleashed.

    Who needs 1980s schmaltz?

  • @JoeJacari Travis,,Travis,,u poor little flake. You really need professional help. Getting on here and impersonating random comments is really grammer school behavior. Look,,,everybody knows its you,,,cut it out. We're all embarassed for you.

  • @JoeJacari do you comment the same bullshit on every buddy rich video? learn a thing or two bud.

  • @JoeJacari Ha! You're fucking stupid! :D

  • @JoeJacari when you say "travis barker came along and changed drums forever" and what you really mean is "is a mediocre player and provides people who know nothing about drumming a low level to aspire to reach" then yes you would be right

  • I traveled with a band and one day Buddy was performing when we were not. He asked if anybody could give him a ride. We did better then that we let him sleep at our quarters which was lavish. He was supposed to be brass. He was not at all and we laughed most the night. Buddy early on was a great tap dancer. Most do not know that. when he did the movie with Eleanor Powell and did a number with her he said she had more rhythm with her feet then he did with his hands. I liked him for his honesty.

  • best face ever 0:51

  • You can convert this to an mp3 at audiogetnow..com

  • wow that blink idiot not got here yet..pmsl

  • This is the best DVD! Really unique. For those of us who saw Buddy play live this captures some of that electric energy he had "up close". Always inspiring to see such natural talent (a rarity today among a sea of mediocre drummers). Bravo Bud!

  • Did anybody hear any clams ?? LOL

  • This is some good shite!

  • the fills and shots at 7:20 are soooo good.

  • Gr8 post..I watch it over & over..& NEVER tire of it...

  • This drummer's OK. He needs to work on his chops a bit. He needs to work on his double bass skills. Travis Barker is a better drummer...

  • @JoeJacari LOL

  • Damn! Those cymbal accents "one AND TWO and three AND FOUR!"" Freakin' monster, he was!

  • what was the name of the mexican drummer who took BR after his dead?

  • wow! just wow! RIP buddy! RIP big band music!

  • Thanks Drum Channel. Best druumer I ever saw!

  • Buddy always used Zildjians. The only time I saw him with anything else was at his concert in Berlin in 1984(?) where he uses a PAISTE ride cymbal with rivets. I always wonder about the reason for that since he was extremely picky with his ZIldjians.

  • Buddy Rich and Jojo Mayer are the best Drummers ever! Nuff said ;-)

  • @ricothemmafan JOHN HENRY BONHAM !!

  • Yep a constant reminder of who the greatest drummer of all time truly is. A true ICON.

  • Freakin' unreal. And that band could swing with the best of them.

  • Bare in mind that the dude was 65 years old at the time of this recording. After about 15 years of listening to drummers, present and past, I've come to the conclusion that this dude will never be surpassed.

In the year 2925, 300 years after mankind has destroyed itself, super intelligent aliens will land on this planet and find Buddy Rich albums scattered over the planet's surface, and they will be taken to their home planet as the most prized relics. They will use it in their music schools.

  • what cymbals did buddy use back then?

  • @campadonico954

As far as we know, Buddy was always a Zildjian guy.

    ~DC

  • Zildjian "A" Brilliant Finish. Still available today. Miss you Buddy.

  • @DrumChannelOfficial yes zildjian cymbals and ludwig drums

  • @campadonico954 hey!! the only cymbals he used after 1940 were zildgian. he absolutly loved avidis and arman

  • @campadonico954 I have a Zildjian booklet which has buddy's cymbal set up, mostly, if not all, A series cymbals...

  • All I can say is WOW! What a spectacular performance.

  • this is the BEST BR vid i've seen...his whole kit sounds great...not just his snare..and was that a china i heard?...unbeatable horns...just...FLAWLESS!

  • @MrLeedom I saw that china!!!! cool stuff! a true master!

  • Betcha he didn't go off on these guys! Tight as shit all the way!

  • LOL. Slow motion. That won't make a difference with Buddy. His hands would still be a blur!

  • the only drumer to play like him in neil peart

  • @giggabyt78

    you are joking, right?

  • AWESOME!

  • i want my drums hot

  • Hey, Travis and Joey can play like this!!! ;-) Ha ha!

  • totally... -_-

  • @Lehmann108 Thats not even something to joke about. Buddy Rich is simply in a different league.

  • No they cant

  • Awesome........

  • From 6:50 on tells why Buddy has been and prolly will be forever the greatest behind a set of drums!

    Btw awesome Ludwig Dums!!!

  • "If you want to play along..."

     ha! as if...

  • Ambidextrous genius of jazz, with all the fine subtleties from years of expressing the sound; set him apart. Man, oh man, that left hand!!!

  • id say cathy is really pist about this DVD...she dident manage to get her teeth into it.! and its for the best...its a top notch production.!

  • this guy in the intro is a douche....stop talking!

  • OMFG!!!! that is the abselute best version of that song ever played! So Swingin'! So Virtuos! So Funky!!!

  • awsum.....well done guys this is cool

  • Man o man! Buddy still wears the crown. Do you hear accuracy of his press-roll?

  • Press roll? Where in the video?

  • Comment removed

  • @cadillacdude1975

That ain't no press roll friend! With Buddy's chops I'd say they were singles.

  • Correct. They are singles. Awesome!

  • oh my gosh....thats just too clean!!

  • I bought this dvd and I love it!!!! Great performances!!!

  • Those drums sound EXCELLENT!!!!!! Especially when you pump it through your home system.......... WOW...............

  • Beautiful.

    Best EVER.....Period.

    Voltage

  • Thank you for the great information......Buddy was the best.....

  • Speaking of Lin Biviano, I personally think Chuck Schmidt and Al Porcino were Buddy's best lead trumpets ~

  • YES! I heard Chuck Schmidt a couple of times in 1978-1979... He was PERFECT! Accurate, in tune, and powerful.

  • I got the DVD. It's great historical footage I guess, but the band is shaky. I've been a defender of Lin Biviano here on YouTube, but he must have had some chop problems during this taping. Buddy, of course, plays his ass off and is worth the price of admission (as always)

  • Great stuff thanks for posting it...Now i'll have to buy it...lollllll...Amazing performance (As always)....The Master

teaching us again, how to play.......He was amazing....

  • I would have given my left ass to be at this show...fucking fantastic....

  • yeah, what's up with Biviano's ending? I'm surprised Buddy didn't ream him out a new one right there!

  • biviano never impressed me no matter who he played with.

  • The master at work - we miss you Buddy.

  • dynamic, brilliant!

  • friggin sh*t... this gives me goosebumps

  • Lin Biviano's weak a s s wailing ruined this tune at the end. i guess he forgot he was playing with Buddy Rich and not Maynard.

  • The cleanest, fastest, most clever, driver, owned"IT"!

  • For all his fireworks, nobody ever gave him credit for keeping such great time.Same with Dennis Chambers....

  • true

  • There's no better !.....Thanks for posting.

  • Put Buddy Rich in slow motion? Is that possible?

  • Great ! I'm seeing this for the first time...I'd seen Buddy live on more than 40 occasions...Thanx for putting it out!!

  • Do you realize that the only guys who can play singles like that (at 7:08) are like in their 20's?

  • @spacitydrummer4JC Not true.

  • When you think he was coming off a heart attack and open bypass only 2yrs before! Please tell me who on this Earth could deliver that savage firepower and finesse at 62 years OLD!!!!!! It aint funny.

  • Version with drums off so you can play along Ummmm i dont think so!!

  • do you know if the gig that buddy and his band at the tropicana in 1970 was ever filmed?

i have the album keep the customer satisfied which is really good

i'd love to see buddy playing "celebration" ive never seen a clip of it being played...i'm sure a clip must exist somewhere?

  • wow! killer!

  • The Greatest Drummer to ever live...... The Awesome Honorable... Our dad on the drums Mr. Buddy Rich!

  • 7:08.....

  • two words; GOOSE BUMPS

  • two words; GOOSE BUMPS

  • gotta stop calling myself a drummer. that was perfection!

  • I love this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Those who go around ripping on other players do it for one reason: because they suck. Buddy Rich didn't keep people who didn't knock it out of the park every night. They might have found their way into the band on occasion, but they didn't stay. Biviano did this band off and on over the course of probably 12 years. And you know who else he also played for during that time period? Chase, Maynard, and Count Basie. Take your negative comments and shove 'em.

  • and i though the (love for sale) drum break on "big swing face" was good...holy shizzot ! BR continues to blow my mind. i am studying Jojo Mayer's DVD to get some of Buddy's hi-end stuff down.

  • That was amazing

  • if there is a way to givea vid 6 stars, i'd do it for this one! buddy drives a band like a freight train!!! arguably the baddest big band drummer ever

  • GENIUS AND TALENT

  • Avoiding the debate on Lin Biviano, let me point out that on "Love for Sale," the alto sax soloist is Andy Fusco and tenor sax soloist is the late Steve Marcus.

  • damn, everyone bags on lin on youtube...

    rofl

this video does do some justice to his lead playing style

  • Lin sounds absolutely horrendous in this. Dave Stahl always had an exact precision with everything he played. crisp, Beautiful, no matter the range. from the pedals all the way up past the doubles and even into the triples. And what's up with Lin's trills on everything, and that terrible ending note (s)?

  • So, Mr. Crazy, can you do better? Every lead player has his own way of doing things. I also love Dave's lead playing, but am a true fan of Lin as well. And Lin has done wonderful things for jazz education. Sure is easy to put people down on line, isn't it? What bands have you played on?

  • But thats what made lin biviano great...his ridiculousness...he had a very individualistic sound and style. you dont have to like it, but you can still appreciate the fact that you know its lin when you hear him play. I think that should be the goal for all of us in this, and any style of music. I'm a bigger Lin Biviano fan than I am Dave Stahl.

  • amen to that dan

  • Steve Marcus Is Awesome...We Love Buddy, But Someone Should Really Put Together A Stever Marcus Tribute

  • inspiring.

  • 7:07 !!!!!!!!

  • awesome.

  • WoW!! The ending wast just spectacular!

  • wow mother fucker is fast

  • Splendid!

  • great!

  • THANK YOU i love this :D

  • wow the endin was amaZinggnngnggg

  • "great" is the only word...

  • incredible ending

  • Thanks for putting that together!!! I love this channel!!!

  • nice video
