its really a type of pick up for exaple, there are single coils which most strats use, humbuckers which what les pauls use and the p-90 style pick ups these are commonly used for surf rock

most of the time it is harmonic minor or phrygian, but a lot of the time it's a lot simpler, like g or d ionian. of course surf rock does share a lot of it's qualities with garage rock too.
