I have a question about the Wimshurst machine, is it ever harder to spin? Like is the load on the crank always the same, or are there circumstances where the discs are harder to rotate like a normal generator?

i found one of these in our barn and the brushes on the collecting brushes are almost gone any idea what i can do to replace them also do the brushes that make contact with the wheeles have to touch the plate

Usually the machine works without the collecting combs to be in contact with the metal plates. How is this possible? And why this technique is prefered?

Missing in the explanation is that the charges induced in a sector are larger than the charge on the opposite sector, because the adjacent opposite sectors influence the sectors too. The machine works without the charge collectors.
