by atleast August I want to get a 120-150 gallon fish tank,Im going to plant it aswell.
But i would like to get a chain pickerel ( type of pike) and 4 yellow perch 3 broke trout 2 long nose suckers ( all of witch native to my area in New Brunswick Canada) and I would like to get 4-6 clown loaches for a "other" type of fish. Would they be ok to live with the native fish in a large tank such as this or would the pickerel just eat them ( the loaches) ?
Luckily in Finland the rules about keeping fish are really strict, because the stupidity of some people in here give me the creeps! If you don't have at least 500 liter (130 gallons) of water in your tank, you shouldn't take any clown loaches because they grow to be too big, and they won't be happy. "Oh but that fish is cute" is not a reason for animal cruelty! And there also should be at least 4 of them, and more is better. Shame on you.
My clown loach loves the over soaked cichlids pellets. The cichlids will not even look at those but my clowns are crazy about them and eating to fatties. What a lovely loach (not a true loach).
nice fishes! i wanted to get some but not sure if they will get along with all my fish, if u dont mind check out my tank n let me know.. Thank u! Im a attach a video, fast forward to like the middle of the video so u can see all the fishes i have there, thanks!
hey, i have 2 clown loaches, and they spend nearly 20 hours a day under their rock. Whats up with that? i suppose they're coming out to eat when its dark, or when im not looking, because they've been doing this for a month now.
@chillincruisin Clowns are shy fish, the more you have the more active they will be. I had 3 to start with and they hid alot. I now have 8 and they are out all the time. Check out my video to see them. If you have the tank space I would add at least 2 more.
I use to have 3 clown loaches but 2 of them died, and now the last one just died yesterday :( what food do clown loach like? Flake food? I have a castle in my tank and the clown loaches are always hiding inside of it should i take out the castle so they dont hide?
@SmileySmirk well i dont now i have a 40 gallon with them in it and i feed the other fish some pellets but wen im watching them they dont eat them i gues they eat it wen i leave and they eat the left overs off the ground because they are all stille healthy
@1m0rek0 I have a 80 gallon tank so they have lots of room to play but whenever its feeding time the angelfish keeps scaring the other fish away. And whenever feeding time is over the clown loach always like suck the gravel...
Nice clown loaches. Lol your catfish hogged the tablet.
I currently have 3 clown loaches and they're about 2 inches long now. But judging from one of your comments I should probably get more. One of my clown loaches is always lonely.
Clownloaches grow very big, up to 16 inches... They need very big tanks: a minimum of 75 gallons or more. And you should not keep only one. That would stress it to death. They are one of the smartes fish i've ever seen. And i agree they are very cute, so think about what i said. Go to "loaches com" for further information.
i dont agree mate i got 1 clown loach in a tank with 4 tiger barbs and 4 green barbs sharks mollys chi chis and many more onli got 1 clown loach and is perfect and has been for over a year mine is about 9 inchs long at the mo hangs with the sharks
@n03lzz i agree totally apart from the part about them being the smartest fish you have ever seen unless you have not kept cichlids . i dont think they come close to cichlids especially uaru, angelfish and sevs also spiny eels very intelligent .clowns are no chumps though
@n03lzz You dont need 75 gallons. I have two large clown loaches in a 200l tank (around 50 gallons) they are perfectly happy and healthy. As long as you have decent swim space and filtration, you dont have to hold fast to the limit of tank size.
You should put some mylasian trumpet snails in that sand.... they'll breed like crazy and the clown loaches will pig out on them..... snails give clown loaches much better color
Yes right. There are... uhm... tons of those snails in the sand.... and even more empty snail shells on it.^^ I got several more tanks so i can take care for replenishment. The camera is not the best, check out my lates video on them called: "Best tankmates: Clown loaches and Tiger barbs / Prachtschmerlen und Sumatrabarben [1/1] " or /watch?v=1ptNIBUrmKQ
A very good homepage for background information on clown loaches is called "loaches com". A twenty gallon is way to small. A minimum of 75 gallons or more. And they need a group. If you ever wanna see your loaches calm and stress-free get at least 6. They become more and more brave the bigger the group is (but that also needs more and more gallons).
Hey, whenever I feed my clown loach one of them always attacks the other one when hes trying to feed, even if I break the tablet into two, you look pretty expert what should I do to stop this? Thanks soo much btw ill subscribe if u answer this and it works :D
The first thing i would try: I'd put one tablet in the left corner and the other one in the right corner of the tank. They don't be jealous for what they don't see.
I got four loaches and they all died within a fortnight i think i got them from a crap shop because they didnt eat and they stayed at the back of the tank the whole time or are loaches a crap fish??

i think no fish eats scrap. They feed from the ground but they need a correct diet and a big tank to grow. Then they can reach up to 16 inches (40 cm).

The "quality" of clown loaches in pet stores is very bad. Many of them are underfed. They need very oxygenated water. It's a problem to get proper ones that survive the transport and the accustoming to a new tank. That's why it tooks me a few month to find my loaches.
Yes it is sand. I think it's the best substrate for fish tanks and it's the best for every ground-dwelling fish. But inform yourself about the disadvantages what you have to do to get rid of them.
If they don't look undernourished everything is ok. I didn't saw some of my clown loaches for a few days, but they are nocturnal, then. So it can be usefull to feed them just before you turn the lights off.
thanks, im sure i will upgrade to a 5ft tank nearer the time when they become bigger but they are only about an inch and a half long, have you ever ed them pieces of cucmber of shrimps ???
you dont necessarily need a 5 foot tank i have a 2ft tank with a beeta fighter five tetras, 5 glowlight danios and an algae eater and there is plenty of space the only thing is how do i get the cown loaches to come out of hiding or will they do it when they are comfortable as i am still in the process of adding fish ?????
They do need a 5ft tank because they grow up to 1ft!!!
Clown loaches need up to 1 year to accustom themselves to a new fish tank. They orientate themselves at points in the tank like plants, stones, wood, etc. So its useful to make no big changes with that.
Older clown loaches need more time for this than younger ones, and they are more brave in bigger swarms.
I wonderfull looking fish you have here.Good to see someone who really cares for them I have two clown loaches now for only 1 year I have a long way to go with mine.keep up the good work with your tank :)

They are very healthy looking, they will also enjoy prawns, bloodworms, JMC Catfish pellets & Hikari sinking catfish pellets. Do they take the flake from your hand?
I hope they will stay like this. In my new video "Feeding time in my 420 liters tropical Asia fish tank / Asienbecken [1/1]" you can see how i feed them. I never tried hand feeding.
Clown loaches need a diet largely based on protein; you should be feeding them a protein based live/frozen food 3-4 times a week to help them get the balanced diet they need =) Your other loaches and your gourami will also benefit from some protein- try some krill, or based on your loaches size, maybe some blood worms.

First: No fish is a crap fish!!!
Most clown loaches in pet stores are caught out of the wild. They had a very long way till they are swimming in your tank. Sometimes they also don't know how to eat flakes or pellets, so they need living food.
That's why they are very susceptible and need a knowledgeable keeper.

You mean Ichthyophthirius, right?
Fish get it cause of stress and weakening. Clown loaches are extra fragile against it so you have to avoid stress.
If your fish are afflicted with it you can buy effective medicines against Ichthy.

Thanks for the advice. I have some bog wood on order so it should hopefully feel more secure when it has been installed. Thanks.

Clown loaches need up to 1 year to accustom themselves to a new fish tank. They orientate themselves at points in the tank like plants, stones, wood, etc. So its useful to make no big changes.
Older clown loaches need more time for this than younger ones, and they are more brave in bigger swarms.
Don't be afraid. It need some time till they feel at home. After that they won't be fearful anymore.

I'm feeding a complete-food which contains 48% protein, but thank you for the advice. I will also try that out.

what are you feeding

In this video you can see greenstuff tablets for herbivorous fish. And besides that, I am feeding flakes and cucumber.
