  • I ain't laughin' at you Wolf. Not atall.

  • YouTube just peaked. You can turn off the internet now.

  • R.I.P HUBBERT

  • The funny thing is that guitar in real life is HUGE. Wolf makes it look like a banjo

  • so this is where jimmy page got the riff for the Lemon Song ....

  • Cool thank. A real great cllp

  • I think the drummer is Odie Payne. I looked him up in Wikipedia and the picture looks right on him. But, who is the unseen pianist? I betting lafayette Leake. Other opinions? This is a killer clip. To see Wolf relatively young and playing guitar is so fine. To see himm jumping up and down playing guitar and challenging Hubert Sumlin is awesome!!!!!!!

  • @pterosonus

Henry Gray was Wolf's piano player from the 50s until 1968 I believe. Gray was an excellent artist in his own right, though he played more of a clean, straight ahead blues on his own.

  • He makes it look easy!

  • Who's the drummer?

  • @vaquero44 I posted an answer to your question.

  • 3 people have no soul.

  • R.I.P. Hubert.

  • Rest in Peace Hubert!

  • R.I.P. Hubert Sumlin.

  • Good stuff !!! awright!!

  • oh and by the way IF you didn't know, willie dixon sued zeppelin for copyright infringement and if you didn't notice, this song was played live in 64, probably meaning that it was produced and recorded a couple years before, who knows. Anyways, the lemon song by zeppelin was recorded and produced in 69.

  • the wolf definitely had a small to normal sized head

  • The guitar looks like a toy next to him.

  • Love Hubert's pimped-out axe. Wish they'd filmed more of Willie Dixon, I get a kick out of watching him play brilliantly whilst looking bored.

  • Brillant, simply brillant.

  • What is this from? Incredible, ferocious!

  • i got turned on to wolf as a kid but did'nt really pay attention. now i am a hardcore fan.

  • when howlin wolf first started singing it scared the hell out of me

  • jimmy page never used this riff. the "lemon song" was based off of/a ripoff of "killing floor'. yes this and "killing floor" are very similar. also, hubert sumlin was a pro. too bad more people don't know him..

  • @Wuddymaters13 yes but the only difference between this riff and the riff in lemon song after the first couple of verses is it's faster and the guitar distortion is different. Face it, everyone rips off everyone, but we also call it inspiration. Even the last couple words of lemon song that plant sings is "killing floor". They also redid shake for me and all that. I just hate when people don't say someone ripped off the riff, maybe i should make a video of this riff and zeppelins riff :)

  • Guitarist looks about 15-- Bit of a clunky performance- but very talented and a groovy sound- Bet he grew into a great player

  • @keltyk That's Hubert!

  • he was 300 pounds of joy lol

  • Now I know where Jimmy Page got that riff!!

  • Genius!!!

  • It's great how much control and mastery he has over such a rough and gravelly voice. And it looks like he could span about half of the guitar neck with those huge hands! Anyway, fans of good raw blues might want to check "Suzie" by Rosetta West. It's on my channel with some other good raw blues, like "Underground" and "Susanna Jones." Thanks.

  • 3 dislikes. Morons.

  • PURE GOLD

  • This man is noble

  • It`s hot.is wonderfull .This is the blues men

  • i can die happy now that ive seen this

  • you aint gonna get any body than the black man to play the blues

  • super, super, super...

  • this man had more raw talent in 1 tiny bead of sweat from his brow than the lot of these current day pop motherfuckers!

  • @judaschongo I agree! I want to sing the blues!!!!

  • Man His voice punches me in the face and I love it!

  • @db247310 That's best way to describe it...

  • At least we know where part of the Led Zeppelin's "The Lemon Song" came from.

  • This is the real deal folks. Yes indeedy!

  • man that guitar looks so tiny! haha

  • What's with the 'fave feature' not being available, lately?!?!? And 3 disliking?!?!? C'mon....sigh.

  • @porkpiepaul That's Hubert Sumlin on guitar, Willie Dixon on bass and Clifton James on the drums.

  • Who's he got backing him here?

  • Wow! this is great! - @ optionout- it's the back beat baaaayyyyy-B! standard blues 3 chord change up- F'in AWESOME- I LOVE the Wolf, AND that 3 chord change as much as a Drop D for metal. it's the basics. you can riff forever in either.

  • These lyrics are not the same as they are for the "killing floor", but this is the same music. Can anyone explain that to me..please?

  • @optionout They all 'STOLE" from each other...I've heard that lick in lots of Blues songs, Got my Mojo Working, Walking In The Park, Killing Floor,etc...

  • @optionout These guys were trying to make money besides making great music. They tried to find a formula that worked... that got people dancing and buying their records. Every widely selling artists has done it to some level back then and today for sure. Killing Floor sold pretty well and played pretty well live, so he tried to catch a bit of that for another song. That rhythm was too good to just be used on one song. Considering CCR, LZ, and others had hits with it I think he was right.

  • howlin wolf was a big influence on tom waits and captain beefheart

does anyone know where i can get the lyrics for this song

  • Jeez, I realize Led Zeppelin's "Lemon Song" is basically a cover of "Killing Floor", but the fast solo section is taken from this song almost note-for-note. Is this another Willie Dixon song?

  • never seen a drummer hit it with both ends of the stick!! F*ckin awesome thanks for the upload

  • Wolf was the coolest!

Not as polished as Muddy. Not as raw as Hound Dog.

Just at the Exact right place in between!

    Stunning!

  • I grew up where Howlin Wolf was born! I remember my father singing his songs ALL the time! Brings back soooo many good memories!

  • anyone tell me what make of guitar the lead has?

  • Sumlin plays like Gatemouth w no pick. Also, the drummer, check his stick swappin the snare routine. Is that Fred Below or Francis Clay?

  • as one of his drummers i agree hat he was a kind generous man...he liked having a lot of musicians around him...he was the most awesome singer...no one has ever out done his style and drive....he left us too soon

  • @ezygittar09

    Most excellent!

  • anyoneknow what kinda amp hubert using?

  • Check out the dang upright bass around 4:15.

  • Eh Megajosh2, I believe it is "Don't Laugh at Me". Ya see, a lot of blues artists not only "borrowed" from eachother often, they also had a habit of kinda repeating their work. As in they'd have the same chords and general tune, but different lyrics and title. Cool thing to me is if you really dug a particular song or two, you might be blessed with three different versions of it. Anyway, much respect to the Wolf and early pioneers. They don't make artists like those anymore.

  • Now I see, the guitar riff was borrowed by Jimmy Page (Lemon Song)

  • @SneakyJem Zepplin was pretty much a Blues band with big speakers & distortion pedals

  • That's a sweet Fender guitar.

  • this man is into this song

  • WOOOOO!! I like them drums

  • @Thamacx agree - the "Back sticking" is amazing

  • Thank you.

  • Don't Laugh At Me? What? This is Killing Floor...

  • the lemon song ;D

  • At nearly 6 ' 6" and 300 pounds, the Wolf didnt have anything to prove by being a bad ass. Story is, he was a smart, kind and gentle man and nothing like his bad ass stage persona.

  • @KAZOOU2 Shit! Talk to some of these old black cats who ran the "JUKE JOINTS" back in the day..."HOWL ALL NIGHT AND FIGHT YOUR ASS ALL DAY"! He smacked Hubert Sumlin in the mouth over something once..Wolf wasn't to be fooled with...Most of those old cats back then all they did was play music, gamble and stay up all night! Wolf, did have his money ( due to his wife) in better shape than any other bluesman back then.

  • @KAZOOU2

Yeah, he was supposedly a very nice person. But he makes that guitar look like a toy in his hands.

  • @KAZOOU2 I don't really get what you're trying to say - he's performing - what does his stage persona have to do with what you believe his everyday-persona is - especially throwing "smart" in the mix? Why can't you just accept his performance as it is - really kicking - really funky - and leave it at that? I don't understand what people want from a performer other than a performance? Why do you need to attempt to peer beneath? What's the point?

  • @KAZOOU2 you should read his bio "Moanin' At Midnight". He grew up in rough times in a rough environment. According to the people who knew him he was gentle an kind mostly but had an explosive temper .. an impressive not to be fooled with

  • what a band, Sumlin is better than any white guitarist who came out of the white stable , and not to mention Dixon on the doghouse, fu##in' killer , a real black hero, the Wolf.......

  • Why can't anybody else sound this good live? Gotta love the Wolf.

  • OH YEA WOW,I been listenig too blues music for a long time,I really like your channel and music, yea man they were really gettin it lol, love it,Tony, have a really super nice Day))))))

  • They are getting down with the get down and that audience - no help whatsoever - just sitting there - a few patting their feet - and that's it. But, Howling Wolf and his boys STILL put it down. They didn't wait for the audience to get into the groove. They had enough groove going for everybody. That's showmanship. For real!!!!

  • @CheckMate657879 yup! This is totally just such unreal live concert footage!!

  • Man that sure is an ugly guitar Hubert Sumlin plays but, damn, he surely knows how to play the blues with it!

  • I always laugh whenever I see or hear the Wolf, he could entertain you and scare the hell out of you simultaneously, and sitting in the front of any venue of his really amplified that sensation.

  • this shit cooks

  • He puts everything he's got into it.

  • Is that Hubert over there stage left? Seems like that would be the right period...

  • @6SL yes sir.

  • @6SL If you see or hear Howlin Wolf, Hubert Sumlin isn't far off. Nobody can quite recreate Hubert's sound especially when he was in his prime. What's amazing to me is that he can get his tone from any guitar his hands touch.

  • I dig the flip stick thing the drummer is doing!

  • Check the audience...genteel well-dressed whites...diggin the Wolf's real & earthy shit

  • Anybody knows if that sow is available on DVD ???

  • Awesome clip! The Wolf is so cool! Thanks for sharing.

P.S The 2 people at the bottom rated this clip "dis I like!"

  • Funny to see the audience sitting behind the band

  • Anyone aware of an album this preformance may be on? Closest I found was "Howlin' Wolf Rockin the Blues Live Germany 1964 and this song doesn't look to be listed :(

  • I fully agree on the druming, it kind of has a jazz feel. We can see that sometimes the softer you hit the more it swings. And the intensity of Howlin' Wolf is scary. Clapton reports that he was scared to death during the London Session. I can understand that!

  • @BluesmanDizzy it might be clifton james. *might* be

  • @shardimon it IS Clifton James!

  • The Wolf and that drummer, oh man what an energetic and swinging team they are.

Anyone here knows the name of the drummer?

  • I was born into the wrong generation!

  • @northernfirepower me too!!!

  • @northernfirepower Fuck man, I couldn't agree with you more!

  • @northernfirepower No you wasn't Just deal with karma and let it run over their dogma ...O.K.?

  • @northernfirepower You think this as well? Me, too :( But I was even born in the wrong country ^^

  • No matter what guitar Hubert plays he gets that same sound.... killer.

  • theres always something mysterious and supernatural about good o'l Howler's music i just cant put my finger on it

  • real music fuck hip hop bop i am it and money makes me feel like your a sell out faggot

  • cant pay money to understand this

  • anyone know what guitar hubert is using

  • @jacobbeahm

    An old plastic Goya

  • @jacobbeahm Looks like Fender Jazzmaster or Jaguar, possibly it's a custom shop guitar based on Fender shape

  • Amazing, this just eats every other "blues" band for breakfast. Then "Wolfs" it down and grins.

  • hahaha, check out the drummer, what a champ

  • Howlin wolf is the greatest bluesman of all times. No other bluesman had that charisma or that voice. Man could evoke so many emotions with that howl. He could make you feel so good with humor, and make you feel so bad with the deep down dirty down home blues. Just Awesome.

  • one of the best artist to come out of sun records.god bless the wolf.

  • QUI N'AIMES PAS WOLF N'AIMES PAS LE BLUES THE BEST AVEC MUDDY WATERS THE BEST BLUES SIXTIES

  • Hubert Sumlin the master of rock

  • Wolf was THE bluesman!

Incredibly soulful, pouring his soul out, and a unique voice!

    \m/

  • all these pioneers are long gone but they are still a big inspration for a lot of people. may they r.i.p thanx guys

  • @ms1979ms sumlins still alive

  • Two words: Hubert Sumlin!!

  • awww yeah rockin the blues! so cool session :D thx again

  • cool i can play that lead guitar riff!

  • when i hear him sing i feel like choking!

  • Fred Below on drums,Hubert Sumlin guitar.Yes he was flat on the first solo but they handled it professionally, didn't hear him tune up but he was bang on for the second solo. This is an amazing clip,I've never seen before.I know he played East Ham Grenada,Barking Rd.London E6 in '64.Was it there?A fantastic number, not really a song, hardly any words and nothing rhymed.Brilliant.The Wolf's powerful emotional vocal expression is all you need.

  • The drum beat is great, and that drummer is even cooler, hes got mad flavor. Great performance by all

  • Hubert seems to be a little flat, probably from that cheap piece of italian crap, america made better guitars back then.

  • echt geil cool richtig gute mucke

  • what kind of guitar Hubert Sumlin using?

  • @JFA1331 looks like a Jack White Style guitar

  • @JFA1331 It's a Bartolini.

  • Love it!

  • ONE OF THE GREATEST.........................

  • I'm amazed he can even play the guitar with fingers like 1lb sausages ....

    awesome

  • Now this man could perform. Now I can see why he was such a great influence on early white rock n roll groups such as the Rolling Stones.

  • I hear a little bit of Led Zeppelin in there. This sounds much much better.

  • @bergerfry no you mean you hear a bit o howlin wolf in led Zeppelin.

  • @bushuraloser My bad. This is true. I still need to look at my Zeppelin albums and see if they gave Wolf any credit. I bet not.

  • @bushuraloser : You got that right!

  • Willie Johnson was Wolf's first guitar player. I like Hubert OK, but Willie Johnson was smokin'. I think lots of folks think Willie's playing was Hubert. But Wolf ran a tight ship, and Willie was wild, drinking hard and starting fights. Wolf fired him (maybe twice).

  • @puzz98 Here here! Willie Johnson was awesome! He had a great distorted guitar sound way before anyone (except maybe Pat Hare?). He's really great on Everybody's In The Mood, those early Sun sides. If he'd stayed out of trouble and followed Wolf to Chicago, he'd probably be famous now.

  • I think Thats Sam Lay on drums what a show boater great chpos overand under shot gun style left hand manover Sams alive and playing guitar i saw him at the 2010 chicago blues festival ! Honoring 100 yrs of Howling Wolf

  • anyone who doesnt appreciate hubert sumlin is irrelevant

  • @johnleelyon

he's good but jimmy rogers is better.

  • A bit outta tune there Mr. Sumlin. I think he shoulda stuck with the Les Paul rather than the flashy Italian-made Eko. Those things couldn't hold a candle to a good American guitar. They can sound really cool. . . . but staying in tune isn't their strong suit.

  • Eko guitar.

  • @tuskedbeast Close... it's an Italian Bartolini.

  • Epic lovely stuff

  • Wolf was very tough on his band mates, however, he was a very good employer. He even payed unemployment when there were no gigs[!!!].

Buy the Howling Wolf DVD and get the whole amazing story.

I met Wolf once in L.A. at The Ash Grove Club in the 70's.He was a warm genial guy and truly "larger than life" itself. We talked about Little Walter and shook hands. His hand was like a catchers mitt.

God Bless Wolf and God Bless Chess

    Monrovia,Calif

  • @mistergato23 I Remember The Ash Grove Club back in the 60's & 70's. It was located on Melrose Avenue. It was a put-you-in-the-groove place when you went inside.

  • @mistergato23 yes!! You know you Howlin wolf! yea man.. he was a business man a great man

  • Hubert guitar is some Italian job .Half plastic and wood.Cant recall the name.Big in the 60's.Eventually Hubert stuck to a Les Paul Goldtop.

    No pick,Wold didnt like um,,,

This is the real deal guys. These are the architects of rock and jazz,,,

  • Chester Athur Burnett

  • wierd seein hubert without a gold-top lol im 19 and glad of youtube

    (who isnt lol)

  • I like this one

  • ha!... listen to that riff sumlin is playin! ... that is exactly, what jimmy page has stolen from him on Album 2!!! oh goddammit, that bastard, here is the original! that makes much more sense!! i love the wolf!

  • @KliUretzschmar

he stole that riff from killing floor, also by howlin wolf. this is a diff song with basically same riff, but yeah led zeppelin got sued for that one

  • I love Hendrixs' version more ofcourse. But I love the vintageness and soul of this version.

  • The intensity in Wolf's voice is one of a kind.

    Thanks for posting.

  • What kind of guitar is Sumlin playing?

  • @Mkovits I'm not positive, but I believe the guitar is a Fender Jaguar.

  • very cool....

  • big time big time

  • wow, hes fuckin amazing live

  • That guitar is dwarfed in the hands of the giant Wolf.

  • @12stringsforme he makes it look like just a big uke

  • Howlin Wolf, o Lobo Uivante... Simples... Simplesmente Fantástico!!! Verdadeiro Gênio.

  • anybody knows, who is the drummer in this video?

  • Cassell Burrow? Not sure..

  • thanks. I guess so.

  • Fantastic!! and I LOVE that axe H.S. is playin

  • yes and all others who we worship like the masters itself, but music is here.

  • So this is where JImmy Page got the Lemon Song interlude.. hmm..

  • yep, and the Lemon song lyrics is from the Killing Floor, which if I'm not mistaken was wrote for H.W. by Willie Dixon.

  • obviously/ jimmy page couldnt fucking shine wolf's shoes. one of zepp's albums were all fuckin rips/ fuck them

  • no this is where he stole the lemon song interlude
