I think the drummer is Odie Payne. I looked him up in Wikipedia and the picture looks right on him. But, who is the unseen pianist? I betting lafayette Leake. Other opinions? This is a killer clip. To see Wolf relatively young and playing guitar is so fine. To see himm jumping up and down playing guitar and challenging Hubert Sumlin is awesome!!!!!!!
Henry Gray was Wolf's piano player from the 50s until 1968 I believe. Gray was an excellent artist in his own right, though he played more of a clean, straight ahead blues on his own.
oh and by the way IF you didn't know, willie dixon sued zeppelin for copyright infringement and if you didn't notice, this song was played live in 64, probably meaning that it was produced and recorded a couple years before, who knows. Anyways, the lemon song by zeppelin was recorded and produced in 69.
jimmy page never used this riff. the "lemon song" was based off of/a ripoff of "killing floor'. yes this and "killing floor" are very similar. also, hubert sumlin was a pro. too bad more people don't know him..
@Wuddymaters13 yes but the only difference between this riff and the riff in lemon song after the first couple of verses is it's faster and the guitar distortion is different. Face it, everyone rips off everyone, but we also call it inspiration. Even the last couple words of lemon song that plant sings is "killing floor". They also redid shake for me and all that. I just hate when people don't say someone ripped off the riff, maybe i should make a video of this riff and zeppelins riff :)
It's great how much control and mastery he has over such a rough and gravelly voice. And it looks like he could span about half of the guitar neck with those huge hands! Anyway, fans of good raw blues might want to check "Suzie" by Rosetta West. It's on my channel with some other good raw blues, like "Underground" and "Susanna Jones." Thanks.
Wow! this is great! - @ optionout- it's the back beat baaaayyyyy-B! standard blues 3 chord change up- F'in AWESOME- I LOVE the Wolf, AND that 3 chord change as much as a Drop D for metal. it's the basics. you can riff forever in either.
@optionout They all 'STOLE" from each other...I've heard that lick in lots of Blues songs, Got my Mojo Working, Walking In The Park, Killing Floor,etc...
@optionout These guys were trying to make money besides making great music. They tried to find a formula that worked... that got people dancing and buying their records. Every widely selling artists has done it to some level back then and today for sure. Killing Floor sold pretty well and played pretty well live, so he tried to catch a bit of that for another song. That rhythm was too good to just be used on one song. Considering CCR, LZ, and others had hits with it I think he was right.
Jeez, I realize Led Zeppelin's "Lemon Song" is basically a cover of "Killing Floor", but the fast solo section is taken from this song almost note-for-note. Is this another Willie Dixon song?
as one of his drummers i agree hat he was a kind generous man...he liked having a lot of musicians around him...he was the most awesome singer...no one has ever out done his style and drive....he left us too soon
Eh Megajosh2, I believe it is "Don't Laugh at Me". Ya see, a lot of blues artists not only "borrowed" from eachother often, they also had a habit of kinda repeating their work. As in they'd have the same chords and general tune, but different lyrics and title. Cool thing to me is if you really dug a particular song or two, you might be blessed with three different versions of it. Anyway, much respect to the Wolf and early pioneers. They don't make artists like those anymore.
At nearly 6 ' 6" and 300 pounds, the Wolf didnt have anything to prove by being a bad ass. Story is, he was a smart, kind and gentle man and nothing like his bad ass stage persona.
@KAZOOU2 Shit! Talk to some of these old black cats who ran the "JUKE JOINTS" back in the day..."HOWL ALL NIGHT AND FIGHT YOUR ASS ALL DAY"! He smacked Hubert Sumlin in the mouth over something once..Wolf wasn't to be fooled with...Most of those old cats back then all they did was play music, gamble and stay up all night! Wolf, did have his money ( due to his wife) in better shape than any other bluesman back then.
@KAZOOU2 I don't really get what you're trying to say - he's performing - what does his stage persona have to do with what you believe his everyday-persona is - especially throwing "smart" in the mix? Why can't you just accept his performance as it is - really kicking - really funky - and leave it at that? I don't understand what people want from a performer other than a performance? Why do you need to attempt to peer beneath? What's the point?
@KAZOOU2 you should read his bio "Moanin' At Midnight". He grew up in rough times in a rough environment. According to the people who knew him he was gentle an kind mostly but had an explosive temper .. an impressive not to be fooled with

They are getting down with the get down and that audience - no help whatsoever - just sitting there - a few patting their feet - and that's it. But, Howling Wolf and his boys STILL put it down. They didn't wait for the audience to get into the groove. They had enough groove going for everybody. That's showmanship. For real!!!!
I always laugh whenever I see or hear the Wolf, he could entertain you and scare the hell out of you simultaneously, and sitting in the front of any venue of his really amplified that sensation.
@6SL If you see or hear Howlin Wolf, Hubert Sumlin isn't far off. Nobody can quite recreate Hubert's sound especially when he was in his prime. What's amazing to me is that he can get his tone from any guitar his hands touch.
Anyone aware of an album this preformance may be on? Closest I found was "Howlin' Wolf Rockin the Blues Live Germany 1964 and this song doesn't look to be listed :(
I fully agree on the druming, it kind of has a jazz feel. We can see that sometimes the softer you hit the more it swings. And the intensity of Howlin' Wolf is scary. Clapton reports that he was scared to death during the London Session. I can understand that!
Howlin wolf is the greatest bluesman of all times. No other bluesman had that charisma or that voice. Man could evoke so many emotions with that howl. He could make you feel so good with humor, and make you feel so bad with the deep down dirty down home blues. Just Awesome.

A bit outta tune there Mr. Sumlin. I think he shoulda stuck with the Les Paul rather than the flashy Italian-made Eko. Those things couldn't hold a candle to a good American guitar. They can sound really cool. . . . but staying in tune isn't their strong suit.

@mistergato23 I Remember The Ash Grove Club back in the 60's & 70's. It was located on Melrose Avenue. It was a put-you-in-the-groove place when you went inside.

The intensity in Wolf's voice is one of a kind.
Thanks for posting.
