@jame679 I came into the Coast Guard at a later age in my late 30s so I only would have qualified for reserves. My job will always be there and we are treated good as regards to military time at RPD (i get like 66 days a year). So for me doing my full-time job and reservists thing along with my wife working we are financially sound and are counting the days for one to graduate HS in 3 years and another in 5 years.

I would not give that up , not only for the retirement but I do love the job. I am one of the training officer and just started with a new recruit last night. He is pretty squared away and just came off active duty with the army. Again love the CG , but also love my full-time career as well. It is not an easy job at all.

@jame679 I wouldn't be able to number #1 because of age and I came in as a PS. Number #2 I have two teenage kids here and married for over 16 years. I have been in my current department for 8 years (over all 20 plus years civilian law enforcement experience) so that means in 12 years I will have my police retirement (I would be a fool to give that up) I will continue and do the reserves and also have one there.

I was a firefighter/emt for 6 yrs before that. I am a reserve ME at a small station. I do what I can with the reserves and work with the active duty. I would never address anyone active , reserves , or even the aux as you have.

@woodsman513 Go into the reserves! Active duty currently has a very long wait list unless you want to go FS and be a cook. I'm at a Port Security Unit in the reserves been there for about 4 months now. I absolutely love it. It is by far the best job, get to have fun while finishing my education in college.
@woodsman513 Are you talking about the ASVAB test? Port Security is a type of unit its not a rate in the coast guard. Just tell your recruiter you want to be stationed at a PSU. As far as the ASVAB test goes with the math, the test is the same for every rate. You just need to score higher or lower for different jobs. The test does involve some math, its mainly basic algebra, word problems and some geometry.
@wassuptocool oh i was talking about basic training like when you are in the classroom if there was any math . so wait if i go talk to the recruiter about port security and when i complete basic training am i automatically in a port security unit stationed at a port security base or do i have to train in some kind of rate to be in a port security unit. thanks for the help its going to be awhile before i see a recruiter do to my transportation issues
@woodsman513 No there is no math in basic training. If you join the reserves you get to pick your station which you will go to right after basic training, just let your recruiter know that you want to be at a Port Security Station. As far as the rate it depends on the billets that are open at the Port Security Unit that you want to be at. They have so many slots available for each rate. Port Security Units do consist of basically every rate its just whether they have an opening or not.
@wassuptocool Just keep in mind you may not be near a PSU and might have to travel a distance. I am at a small boat station and the nearest PSU is far away. They are also started to move Chiefs around every 5 years kinda of like the active, The latest message E-6 and below will follow the same in 2011.
@woodsman513 Are you talking about the old Port Security Specialist or a Port Security Unit? I was a Port Security Specialist at a small boat station. They have now phased out PS and we are now Maritime Enforcement Specialist. Its both active and reserve unlike the PS was.

@woodsman513 woodsman513 As of Jan 2010 the Port Security Specialist rating was phased out and the Maritime Enforcement Specialist began. PS was a reserve rating only , but the new ME is both active and reserve.
@woodsman513 There are many training school that once in you can go to. I have attended Reserve Boat Crew College and Boarding Officer Practical. After I was in drilling for a year obtained Communications Watch Standard and Boarding Team Member qualification. No as boat crew on the 25 RB-S and Boarding Officer. A lot to get involved in both in the reserve and active duty. Great Branch.
@tc1530 qiuck question before you go any where or do anything do all new coast guard recruits go through the same basic training or do they train you based on what you want to do in the coast guard. i know those are questions for the recruiter but i wont be able to head up there for like 3 weeks

@woodsman513 as new to military , unless you have a civilian career that meets something the coast guard wants as a reservist , you will go through the regular boot camp at Cape May , NJ 8 1/2 or 9 weeks now.They have a program called DEPOT (used to be called REBI) 3 weeks where either prior service active or reserve or people that have something that meets coast guard's needs.
Respond to this video.. the boot camp has nothing to do with any job or rating you are looking to do. You may come in as a E-1 to E-3 depending on college or experience , then you will attend A school for whatever job you are looking to do when excepted. ME A school is 9 1/2 weeks. That is at the MLEA in Charleston , SC
Respond to this video.. for active you can be assigned to a station , sector , cutter and so on (I am a reservists so I can't answer much on that) but once you are able to you can go back to the MLEA for boarding team member school and eventually boarding officer school. There are other speciality school and law enforcement school that you may an can attend depending on the assignment.
Respond to this video...If you are at a station you would might be required to have a boat crew. As a reservist I am requited to be boat crew qual'd on the 25 RB-S and have comms watch standard qual's. Having crew helps when you are a BTM/BO , because when doing LE you can also do SAR. But talk to a recruiter then will help you in. But all the rate specific questions you have to ask someone that does that job , recruiter may not know.

Then after thats all over re-enlist to the full time coast guard. I'm doing the same thing with the navy, or coast guard, haven't made up my mind yet :P Good luck though

Depends...how long ago were you in the Marines? if too much time has passed they might send you to Pit-stop which is a shortened bootcamp. if its been less then 7 years i doubt you have to go through boot again.

When you are in the military, you are deployable anywhere. For Coast Guard, they have the better options... Hawaii, Alaska, San Diego, San Francisco, Oregon etc... states that are coastal
Yes Basic Training is the first part of the Coast Guard training, This is like any job before you get to do any of the advanced training there needs to basic training.
dude its the best choice. if you want to be in the military. you go to school and on the weekends you play G.I. Joe on the weekends. And the good thing about the coast gaurd is they mainly stay home and gaurd our ports and coastlines.
I tried to join the reserves, for like almost a year and just as i was trying to take the M.E.P.S again because i didnt have my medical info. My recruter told i could'nt join cause of my acid reflux,which is B-S cause i met a guy who has acid reflux, it aint fare!
FWIW this is an MSST group, not just a group of average joe reservists.

Some of those or any reservists could have been on active duty for 10 years and got out for a civilian job. You don't know. You have no idea what the background is for anyone in that video. You graduated in 2004 , well I had my first child born in 1995 (and you were how old then?) you have very little time and experience in life at this stage of the game.

I was a firefighter/emt for 6 yrs before that. I am a reserve ME at a small station. I do what I can with the reserves and work with the active duty. I would never address anyone active , reserves , or even the aux as you have.

I am a field training officer on my shift. In the reserves I am am Comms/OPSBO (LEI/JUFE) and 25 crew. I think I have held my own there. Have you made 2nd ?

@woodsman513 Go into the reserves! Active duty currently has a very long wait list unless you want to go FS and be a cook. I'm at a Port Security Unit in the reserves been there for about 4 months now. I absolutely love it. It is by far the best job, get to have fun while finishing my education in college.

@woodsman513 Are you talking about the ASVAB test? Port Security is a type of unit its not a rate in the coast guard. Just tell your recruiter you want to be stationed at a PSU. As far as the ASVAB test goes with the math, the test is the same for every rate. You just need to score higher or lower for different jobs. The test does involve some math, its mainly basic algebra, word problems and some geometry.

@wassuptocool oh i was talking about basic training like when you are in the classroom if there was any math . so wait if i go talk to the recruiter about port security and when i complete basic training am i automatically in a port security unit stationed at a port security base or do i have to train in some kind of rate to be in a port security unit. thanks for the help its going to be awhile before i see a recruiter do to my transportation issues

@woodsman513 No there is no math in basic training. If you join the reserves you get to pick your station which you will go to right after basic training, just let your recruiter know that you want to be at a Port Security Station. As far as the rate it depends on the billets that are open at the Port Security Unit that you want to be at. They have so many slots available for each rate. Port Security Units do consist of basically every rate its just whether they have an opening or not.

@wassuptocool Just keep in mind you may not be near a PSU and might have to travel a distance. I am at a small boat station and the nearest PSU is far away. They are also started to move Chiefs around every 5 years kinda of like the active, The latest message E-6 and below will follow the same in 2011.

@woodsman513 Are you talking about the old Port Security Specialist or a Port Security Unit? I was a Port Security Specialist at a small boat station. They have now phased out PS and we are now Maritime Enforcement Specialist. Its both active and reserve unlike the PS was.

@woodsman513 woodsman513 As of Jan 2010 the Port Security Specialist rating was phased out and the Maritime Enforcement Specialist began. PS was a reserve rating only , but the new ME is both active and reserve.

@woodsman513 There are many training school that once in you can go to. I have attended Reserve Boat Crew College and Boarding Officer Practical. After I was in drilling for a year obtained Communications Watch Standard and Boarding Team Member qualification. No as boat crew on the 25 RB-S and Boarding Officer. A lot to get involved in both in the reserve and active duty. Great Branch.

@woodsman513 as new to military , unless you have a civilian career that meets something the coast guard wants as a reservist , you will go through the regular boot camp at Cape May , NJ 8 1/2 or 9 weeks now.They have a program called DEPOT (used to be called REBI) 3 weeks where either prior service active or reserve or people that have something that meets coast guard's needs.

Respond to this video.. the boot camp has nothing to do with any job or rating you are looking to do. You may come in as a E-1 to E-3 depending on college or experience , then you will attend A school for whatever job you are looking to do when excepted. ME A school is 9 1/2 weeks. That is at the MLEA in Charleston , SC

Respond to this video.. for active you can be assigned to a station , sector , cutter and so on (I am a reservists so I can't answer much on that) but once you are able to you can go back to the MLEA for boarding team member school and eventually boarding officer school. There are other speciality school and law enforcement school that you may an can attend depending on the assignment.

Respond to this video...If you are at a station you would might be required to have a boat crew. As a reservist I am requited to be boat crew qual'd on the 25 RB-S and have comms watch standard qual's. Having crew helps when you are a BTM/BO , because when doing LE you can also do SAR. But talk to a recruiter then will help you in. But all the rate specific questions you have to ask someone that does that job , recruiter may not know.

@CRdrum81 go into the reserves, get your bootcamp and training school over with, then goto a college and you'll be in the reserves at the same time. Then after thats all over re-enlist to the full time coast guard. I'm doing the same thing with the navy, or coast guard, haven't made up my mind yet :P Good luck though

Depends...how long ago were you in the Marines? if too much time has passed they might send you to Pit-stop which is a shortened bootcamp. if its been less then 7 years i doubt you have to go through boot again.

When you are in the military, you are deployable anywhere. For Coast Guard, they have the better options... Hawaii, Alaska, San Diego, San Francisco, Oregon etc... states that are coastal
It also depends on your rates/job.
If you are deployed, 2 months is the maximum time

I tried to join the reserves, for like almost a year and just as i was trying to take the M.E.P.S again because i didnt have my medical info. My recruter told i could'nt join cause of my acid reflux,which is B-S cause i met a guy who has acid reflux, it aint fare!
