@achhang1 You don't do your "final" swear in until the day you ship out to basic training. I'm assuming you are in the DEP. You can withdraw anytime until that final swear in. Don't let them tell you otherwise.

@MrSBChevy yes I think the death penalty is still on the books, BUT I've interviewed a shit ton of AWOL soldiers over the last few years and none of them spent a day jail for it to my knowledge... Dishonorable discharge was the most common punishment. They don't want the bad publicity that would come from killing you or even punishing you. As for military docs, not everybody gets the same treatment. Each person has a different story- even if they have the same doctor sometimes! It's crazy.
There really is no reason for anyone to be pro-awol, but in the event that somebody does decide that is the route they need to take, I think it is a very good thing that there is support out there and places for them to go.
If you're in the military and say otherwise, think about it: do you really want to be deployed with somebody that doesn't want to be there? I mean, really. If you're gonna go to war, you should believe in and understand what you're doing. If you don't, then don't go.

I had a high regard for Iraqi civillians when I went. I never referred to Iraqis as "Haji". When I heard other soldiers say that, I went off on a rant. To me it sounded like "nigger". That's ALMOST true. Like I said, never beleive what recruiters say. Thanks to the Military Industrial Complex, there isn't much "work" for Army Mechanics and other support MOS's in Iraq anymore. I'm an Army Mechanic. In 2003, my job was to rebuild turbine engines for M1 Abrams Tanks. But, for reasons still not explained, the Army hired civilians to do my job for 10X the $, & put ME on convoy security for the same assclowns who took my job. & that's AFTER I had to teach them HOW to do my job.
Yeah man that's pretty fucked up, why they would out source that to a civilian who demands more money is beyond me. Then again in these cronyism type times I'm not surprised.

Jobs like Cook, Mechanic, Gun smith etc. yeah, the Army is pretty much railroading us out of the service by hiring civillian contractors (90% of whom got their skills in the Army. Redundancy anyone?) but where the Army REALLY needs people outside of Combat jobs like Ranger is in Electronic Warfare. If you join up, you should ask your recruiter about it. I got a look at his promotion orders & no shit, it said "Private Second Class". Nobody ever says that. We all just say "PV2". Reason being is the life of a PV2 is so short. PV2s usually either get promoted to PFC or demoted back to Private within 6 months. My bad.
@FluxRostrum The Army does not and cannot kidnap people & send them to war. I've personally seen at least a dozen people get out of going to Iraq/Afghanistan. Raise your hand and say "I don't wanna go!" & the Commander will start your outprocess paperwork on the spot under Chapter 13 UCMJ and then you get a Dishonorable discharge. The Army can kick you out for almost anything. I don't think I've ever met a commander who wanted to have people who did not wanna be there in his/her command.

The war in Iraq is not a legal war (one of the reasons Canada refused to participate) and in my opinion it is a war of aggression, Ryan should be granted refugee status in Canada. We need more people like him in the world, people who refuse to just sit back and follow orders.

I did not want to deploy and got Irwin in my Contract cuz it WAS a Training Base and none of the units were deployable, except for my platoon, literally (2nd HET). This guy is not lying I was told the same stuff and got my ass shipped to Iraq. Imagine a Dentist seeing 15x the amount of patients he should? thats what happens and thats why they do shit work, period. @MrSBChevy yes I think the death penalty is still on the books, BUT I've interviewed a shit ton of AWOL soldiers over the last few years and none of them spent a day jail for it to my knowledge... Dishonorable discharge was the most common punishment. They don't want the bad publicity that would come from killing you or even punishing you. The NCO's, First Sgt's, Sgt Major's, all curse and cry when soldiers go to sick hall and don't let you go half the time. There really is no reason for anyone to be pro-awol, but in the event that somebody does decide that is the route they need to take, I think it is a very good thing that there is support out there and places for them to go.
If you're in the military and say otherwise, think about it: do you really want to be deployed with somebody that doesn't want to be there? I mean, really. If you're gonna go to war, you should believe in and understand what you're doing. If you don't, then don't go.

I had a high regard for Iraqi civillians when I went. I never referred to Iraqis as "Haji". When I heard other soldiers say that, I went off on a rant. To me it sounded like "nigger". I'm simply stating that when you have an alarming number of troops referring to the people they're supposed to be protecting as haji, it sort of throws up some red flags. About 4 years ago my brother considered going AWOL because he had been involved with those types of civilian killings, involuntarily of course. Back then I wouldve said the same thing, but now I think he wouldn't have been in the wrong to desert. He now has mild post traumatic stress disorder.

That's ALMOST true. Like I said, never beleive what recruiters say. Thanks to the Military Industrial Complex, there isn't much "work" for Army Mechanics and other support MOS's in Iraq anymore. I'm an Army Mechanic. In 2003, my job was to rebuild turbine engines for M1 Abrams Tanks. But, for reasons still not explained, the Army hired civilians to do my job for 10X the $, & put ME on convoy security for the same assclowns who took my job. & that's AFTER I had to teach them HOW to do my job.

Jobs like Cook, Mechanic, Gun smith etc. yeah, the Army is pretty much railroading us out of the service by hiring civillian contractors (90% of whom got their skills in the Army. Redundancy anyone?) but where the Army REALLY needs people outside of Combat jobs like Ranger is in Electronic Warfare. If you join up, you should ask your recruiter about it. I got a look at his promotion orders & no shit, it said "Private Second Class". Nobody ever says that. We all just say "PV2". Reason being is the life of a PV2 is so short. PV2s usually either get promoted to PFC or demoted back to Private within 6 months. My bad.

@FluxRostrum The Army does not and cannot kidnap people & send them to war. I've personally seen at least a dozen people get out of going to Iraq/Afghanistan. Raise your hand and say "I don't wanna go!" & the Commander will start your outprocess paperwork on the spot under Chapter 13 UCMJ and then you get a Dishonorable discharge. The Army can kick you out for almost anything. I don't think I've ever met a commander who wanted to have people who did not wanna be there in his/her command.

dumb ass, the army recruiter uses benefits that THEY WILL NOT FULLFILL UNDER HIDDEN CONTRACTS. YOU ARE A SUCKER AND NEED TO STAY IN SO THAT WAY YOU CAN GET USED UP AND SPIT OUT ONCE THEY DON'T NEED YOU ANYMORE.

i no what im dealing with. i talk to recruiters all the time. i ask what are the risks and benefits. i no what is happening in the military. my grandfather fought in 2 wars, and ill be damned if some little bitch like that got scared and ran away. i think going awol is one of the most dishonorable things a person can do. and the dental shit, thats the only thing that was wrong. when u join, u sign a contract stating that u r risking ur life, no matter what job u are assinged.

please get some information from somewhere besides the military recruiters and your grandfather... they have very biased opinions and you'd be a better position to judge if you do a little research on American History... no that BullShit they'll teach you in school... look at why wars have been started and who has been profiting from them and then tell me you want to serve those people... cause that's who your serving when you go to other countries and kill people for OUR FREEDOMS.

ive been awol for over a year and a half and ive been pulled over had a dui been to court had many back ground checks and nothing ive never been arrested this guy is a pussy and is like all other soldiers they believe what everyone esle says about goin awol and live in a shell after they finally do go awol.

James92802 your right, because war crimes and going forth on orders given (in blind obedience) when called to give an account they can't say "I was just following orders" (that dont fly) so its a catch 22 really.

All solders understand that one of the most courageous acts anyone in the Armed Forces can complete is to tell an Officer, "No Sir, I wil not". If justified, history has honored those with such courage. Many only have the respect of those they fought with, some have been jailed, some later justified. In 1998 three soldiers were awarded with medals for their intervention in the My Lai Massacre, it took 30 years!

I did not want to deploy and got Irwin in my Contract cuz it WAS a Training Base and none of the units were deployable, except for my platoon, literally (2nd HET). This guy is not lying I was told the same stuff and got my ass shipped to Iraq. Imagine a Dentist seeing 15x the amount of patients he should? thats what happens and thats why they do shit work, period. Recruiters do lie, civilians don't know enough shit to talk any, all you lifers can say what you want but know Im right.

I think the doc over look one big thing about him and that the fact that he has no nuts(sorry that was mean) but I'm tired of hearing my recruiter this my recruiter that the(the pvt favorate cop out). he told you that you would not be in combat. in war there are differnt theaters of war meaning every one can't just go and fight we needed you to control our supplies in country not from your barrack room.

This guy is a loser! I was active duty for four years. I had two of my wisdom teeth taken out from a civilian dentist before I joined and two taken out from an Army dentist after I joined. Both times it hurt like hell! If this guy never had dental work done before he joined, how does he know what kind of treatment he received? What does he have to compare to? Better he is in Canada than on our welfare system.

If you join the US military you will be deployed to combat active areas. This is the most obvious fact and is true for active duty and reserve.
