Fire Bellied Toads absorb EVERYTHING through their skin - it's not advisable to hold them even if you wash your hands well; they'll soak up the soap residue and germs. If you truly love your toads, you WILL NOT HANDLE THEM anymore than necessary.

You can hold these frogs. But your hands have to be clean. Wash them with soap before handling them, and rinse your hands VERY well so they're free of soap residue.

I had 6 of them about 5 years ago. They lived for 14 years. I also bred them before and came out with 125 froglets.

I'd like to comment that I regularly handle the Bombinae I've had for over 3 years and they have never shown signs of sickness. If your frogs are ill bad lighting or unclean water are much harsher on these creatures. As for the calling, it's not a sign of pain and this frog isn't in pain. However, some posters are right, holding these frogs in simulated amplexus does overexcite them and it is likely why it urinated on you. I'd recommend against holding your frog like this for long.

Without wetting you hands and keeping them a little cool you may be burning the toad a bit with the natural salts produced by sweat and salination its good to wear un-powered latex gloves when handling them.

As far as there toxin go's there no real worry if you are not allergic, how ever co-habitaton cam be an issue with some other creatures, I my self have mine in with my Turtle and there doing ok but the water is filtered and there a lot of space.

As for poison dart frogs, the reason they are poisonous is their diet. A beetle that they eat gives them their toxin. Take one from the wild and don't feed it this bug and the toxin with wear out. Any babies born in captivity and not fed this insect should be nontoxic.

I my opinion FBTs only emit their toxin when truly afraid. They roll over on their back, showing their red 'fire' bellies and emit the toxin. I've read about them leaving some people with rashes and not being able to cohab. anything with these frogs which I find to be untrue. i can tell u a lot of things.

#1. dont use gravel for a cage floor. they can accidentally eat it when eating

#2. if u want to tell if its female, look at the size of the arms and middle fingers. larger arms but smaller fingers are male.

#3. have 2 or more. they need companions.

And #4. Have half of the cage water and the other half land.

If it's true, it must be an indirect method like in the case of poison dart frogs which has strong toxin in the nature but in captivity they start to lose it in a long time (after generations?) because their food items lack of specific chemicals. But what would be the point in removing toxin? People just shouldn't lick them, that simple it is. Firebelly toads never have that strong toxin that people couldn't catch them with bare hands.
