I've been driving now for just over a year and I still have trouble with backing at times. The saying is true that you have a wide open space and it's harder to hit the hole than when you back between two trucks.
United States of America = 40% Retards,40% Fat Assholes/Bitches,

I've been guilty of making jokes about Schneider (and Werner and Swift, ect.) but 1. Their training is too short, and not nearly comprehensive enough, and 2. WHY do they have to put newbs on the road in the godawfullest ugly trucks?
As far as backing in general, you can be trained well, and can be competent; some drivers have a flair for it, and some don't. Glad to see this driver didn't get discouraged.
I've been driving for 20 yrs. It's all hand to eye coordination. It doesn't take any great strength. Anyone can go to school and get a license. But you either have it or you don't.
I just love when stupid ass truck drivers film newbies guess when you started trucken you where already backing up soon as you left your mommas twat dum ass its a learning process nobody is born noing everything if its any help jackass i took my Cdl license in 44 hrs of training and passed with the state trooper first shot but there's alot i need to learn common sence is good but having a brain is key jack
if they "feel unsafe backing" then they need to find another line of work, this is what you get when you hire book drivers based on what they wrote on a piece of paper...this also gets people hurt or killed and shit damaged....
@kemokleen yep, they sure do but some need to learn the hard way that they ain't cut out for some things and this guy will never be one of them because the people that hired him most likely based their decision to do so on what he put on his application and never once gave him a driving test, they just assumed that he has the CDL so he most know what to do...
"PROOF that large companies care NOTHING about safety"
It's not fair to generalize like that. There are plenty of companies that care for nothing more than the safety of their drivers and the people driving around them.
Though this particular company doesn't seem to from what you've already said, not all are like that :)
First time I ever saw a spotter in front rather than the rear. That's their first mistake. What they really need to do is find an empty parking lot and practice. If the company gives them a problem simply tell them they broke down, but only after they got their practice in. If they need proof cut the fan belt or something minor.
@VajinalBloodFart This is not flaming, I actually spoke with the drivers afterward. It is crappy companies that want to put meat in the seat that bother me!
I worked for SWIFT and can say that these trucking companies do not give a damn about safety. They hurry to get trainees on the road so they can use them to run more revenue miles. Instead of stopping to sleep, which is what the trainer would have done before he got his trainee, they make the trainee drive while the trainer sleeps. Clear to see why LOL
And if you are not accustomed to sleeping in a bouncing cab then you are in trouble.
I've gotten my class A CDL license Back in December of 2010 and now have a hazmat and tanker endorcement but how do I get on the job when all the carriers require years of driving experience? what company that doesn't require years of experiences and accept graduate drivers?
@sadikhsir I tried Werner and they wouldn't take me because I didn't do my training at their designated School they want me to have 30 days of experience to get on with them other wise I'm screwed.

Wow. I watched this video about 1 month ago before attending a trucking school. I am a couple weeks in and I can barely offset back. Even I could do this one.
he gave it to much right wheel when he almost jacked his trailer. Should of threw more left wheel on it to stay in front of his trailer. Coulda set up as a ally dock for more room.
Nothing was hit. They are learning. I had someone trying to tell me how to do it when I first started. I had to learn myself. At least he had a spotter. Schneider is so hard up for drivers they send people out way to soon. Give them a good pay and some time off with their families and maybe they could hold onto their drivers. And let them go home when they are promissed to go home. Sitting in a dock and not getting paid, a lugger has a better job.
Am sure we all remember the days...but sir I gotta pile out at 2mins 50sec way to much pain...it'll come in time, the spotter wasn't doing any faves either..

In 3-6 mos if they're still that bad at it, something went wrong somewhere.
I was trained and drove for schneider. luckily, i had the best trainer there. But when we did backing, i nailed it the first time. backing was really easy for me. I used to drive a pickup with small trailers behind it, which is actually trickier to back, so i had the experience already. The only thing that took me a lil bit was the double shifting. everything else was cake.
Anybody know if their is a height requirement to become a truck driver because I was watching a video of a DOT physician and I saw them take height and weight measurements and I was wondering why because I've seen plenty of fat truck drivers I'm overweight myself (6'0 270 lbs) but I can't recall seeing any really short ones and I wanted to do team driving with my girlfriend but she is only 5 feet tall and 100 lbs
@mcbam989 absolutely no restriction or preferred size of any...funny how you would assume there is any...go ahead and do the training than get yourself and you girl on the road..best of luck.
I went through swift and fortunately for me, I had some good training and a good driving instructor. Backing came pretty easy for me, but I also had off days, which sucked especially trying different holes and different setups and seemed like nothing was working. lol
@duck0702 you forget something very important...max 5% of the driving is backing..max 5%..some people would never have to back in, because they route is not require them to do so...many engineer and architect design the premises to avoid backing, as backing is an insurance hassle if there is any damage done while backing so, its not like they do this every day and still they cant execute it properly...they are just simply not required to do backing more then max 5% of their entire career. cheers
@tr0uble860 yes...most truck drivers understand that most drivers that work for big companies like swift and schnieder etc are new to drivin and they need help backin up......this situation looks like the new driver is still with his trainer
Interesting note on Schneider telling newbies to get "on the job training". When does a newbie driver trying to make a living have the free time to practice backing up in a lot with cones or markers? You can't reasonably use other rigs as cones when learning. Talk about a baptism of fire.
I've only been working 5 months now with Werner, and I've come to realize that 99% of backing is proper setup. Miss your setup, and you'll never get it in the hole.
i agree its not easy i myself only have 2 years under my belt but after my first month i wasn't doing this bad lol guess some people it comes Natural to and others well there's always swift if it don't work out lol
its not easy backing up when your a greenhorn. it comes with time. we make it look easy, but its not. even now i sometimes get all crossed up and i've driven all over europe. i still have my off days too y'know??
is this a student team or student trainer?if it is student team then we should be happy they were playing it safe instead of just going for it lol, i hate when rookies just go for it and take out 2-3 trailers in the docks lol
Poor guy. We all have to start some time. At least he was overly careful, instead of being reckless. It took him a while, but at least he got the job done and didn't hit anything.
I dont think he would have been able to do it with out the expert directions that he was getting from his spotter. Thank god it was not at night, raining, snowing, nothing in front of him or all of the above.
Aren't you supposed to pass a driving test to get a cdl? I thought that included parts with backing up trailers and stuff. This guy probably don't even have his cdl, or his daddy was the guy testing him.
ah yes memories from when i was in trucking school couldnt back a straight line to save my life 5 years later i can back a truck better then my car lol!
it is hard i agree ive have my class a for 2 years but i could back it up right after i got my licence how did they get there lice and go to a good company like that but i am 22 and cant drive for them cause of my age but some 1 wit no experce and b over the new 23 yr old driveing age i dont get it ive had my class a since 18 thies people are proly in there 30s wtf yall need more seat time
@ruggedramos I agree man. Dont try and understand the law, and rules cause they dont make sense. You can fight for your country at 17 if your parents sign, but you cant drink a beer. You can shoot 50 cal. Machine guns but you cant buy a pistol at a store. My all time fav is you cant bye a hand gun until your 21, but you can buy a AK-47 cause its considered a rifle! The only thing I could think of is insurance, but even then your supposed to be 25 or older, so I have no idea. Good luck!
@bfry38 YOU CAN BUY MULTIPLE RIFLES BUT ONLY ONE HANDGUN EVERY 30 DAYS PLUS TEN FOR THE BACKROUND STUPID LAWS THE CRIMINALS DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT LAWS ARE THEY GO DOWN THE WAY PAY FOR IT TAKE IT LOAD IT WALK AROUND WITH IT BUT THE GUY WITH NO CRIMNAL INTENT CANT
a 53 with tandems is cakewalk compared to blindside backin my 48 spread axle into a tight spot at a truck stop. experience is everything. we all gotta start somewhere. I started with a big company, and now, I own my own truck, and trailer, work for myself, no one else. it all comes down to knowing the equipment, and environment. I can get my 315'' wheelbase 379 with the spread axle into any tight spot you can shove the refer, and still do it faster than you.
Just had my first day of tractor training at work. I didn't think it would be easy but it's hard to reprogram your brain on driving in reverse after being in a regular vehicle for 15 years. Never had CDL training but both guys who moved the trailers in the work yard were deployed to Iraq and they asked me. Tore a trailer door off after it got caught on the rail on the loading dock. Was searching youtube for video aid in backing instruction but no luck. Kudos to those that can back in 30 seconds.
I remember my first time backing a 53......I was soaked with sweat... and it was 15 degrees C below zero ....lol. We all started off looking like fools to seasoned drivers
Damn I could have made that in 2 shots on my worst day, with a truck that the power steering was failing in. Hadda put a trailer in a hole in NJ w/o power steering that sucked
@comet773080 Did you read the info he put on the video. They had less than a months experience and their trainer had only let them back up once. Pay special attention to what it says they were told when they complained that they did not feel safe backing the rig up.
The problem Schneider driver is having is that he turns hard right and goes forward. Then backs up at a hard right as well. Should go forward at hard left then back up hard right. Then straighten out and you're in the hole.
wtf if he cant back the truck he shouldnt be behind the wheel full stop what happens if he gets in a jam somewhere in a busy public spot ie an accident or something hows he gonna manage then.......
@olstar18 point taken but....if this guy aint confident enough to do it he shouldnt be behind the wheel ive my hgv license since i was 18 and never failed as bad as this fella this looks like a very poor attempt your either cut out for it or your not and this guy looks like he aint cut out for it or else hes a slow learner its not like its a tight space hes trying to back into its a big yard!!!
@peterbiltroy Thats a good question. I think its more along the lines of they can do it but don't have enough experience to do so with confidence and definately not speed.
the only people who would consider being a otr driver now in this day and age are losers . and only desperate losers drive for jb hunt , swift , and schneider !
@direct998 You forgot about CR England who clearly doesn't give a 3825 about any of their drivers. All they care about is their drivers move their freight and don't give a $#!t if their driver has legal issues to tend to at home and has communicated that innumerable times. They may get you home if requested 6 mos in advance
wanabe trucker question. stay away for Schneider???? how is Swift with their training? Any recomendations for baltimore, md for training and start up company. Thanks for sharing the video. It helps us wanabe drivers understand the challenges of trucking.
Everyone starts out as a rookie. It only takes so much of driving without sleep for too many hours before it starts to screw with your head. Rookie drivers make rookie mistakes. We can't all be Super Trucker.
I'll be a greenhorn myself after I retake my road test and get my CDL and there is no reason why people on here are talking shit to a new driver better stop and think I bet some of you were in worse predicaments than this driver how do you think you got experience practicing right I don't see any other way you got it so give the new drivers respect or shut your fucking mouths and keep your comments to yourselves
When I was 17 I went to work for a government contracted company that fueled aircraft on a Navel base. The job was to drive a truck pulling 5000 gallons of JP5 and fuel aircraft. To pass the test and drive the truck I had to back the truck and trailer into the shop instead of pulling thru, with no formal training and a regular drivers license....passed on the first try(never pulled forward to realign).
It does take practice, they need to practice on their own. You can't expect the company to baby sit a grown ass person. If he/she has a CDL and is trained to drive a semi then they are legal and safe to drive. You can't be scared of the trailer, take some time and practice on your own where there isn't anything to run into. "I only got to back up once in training" is no fricken excuse.
we have a similar issue in Australia!! Big companies advertise for these people to leave their office jobs, put them through a big 'training' school, and all of a sudden theyre let loose on the highways!!!!
PS.. DD You're a unit mate!!! Off tap videos, but they make me laugh!!
Backing a truck is like riding a bicycle. You have to do it enough that it is automatic. If you have to think about it, it's almost impossible to do.
My wife teaches at a trucking school, and I drive for Toys R Us. We're both million milers plus, but I know that any given spot can give any given driver a rough time on any given day.
All of you professional drivers that are talking crap should take a trip down memory lane. How well did you do the 2nd time you backed up a 53' trailer? It is not an easy task. But you do get better wiht practice.
I was in the same boat as this team. When I was in training I only got to back once and it took me forever to do it. And now after backing up about a million times I can do it 100X better.
What was the dispatcher supposed to say? "Okay, we'll make sure all the docks are pull-throughs!" Practice, practice, practice. Looks like the trainer has about as much experience as the driver.
I GUESS YOU ARE TOO FUCKING FAT AND LAZY TO GET OUT AND HELP..YOU MUST BE A SWEAT PANTS NON SHAVING VIDEO PLAYING NO SHOWER TAKING,FAT FUCK PROABLY WORK WITH US XPRESS YOUR THE FUCKING LOSER...
instructor shouldnt be on the passenger side, i understand shes watching the trailer hes backing up to, but ive trained a few drivers, and i stay on the driver side and move with the truck, and a quick squat and peek under the trailer will tell you how close he is, being on the passenger side is just stupid when training. your making the trainee have to move his head way to much that way.
When i get my class 1 licence i hope if i have problems like this a more experienced driver would help me out and give me tip's, not just watch and see me struggle!
I am currently doing my class 2 licence, our trainer lets us do atleast 2 backup's every day! that being said backing up a class 2 is a piece of piss!
Their trainer letting them only do 1 backup is a joke!!!! they should be allowed to do it until they can do it mostly right.
Only thing that pisses me off bout all this is they prob went to school and then just got put in a truck...... I have been driving cdl class A for 7 years locally and the OTR fucker companys won't hire me cause I don't have over the road experience what a fucking joke. Shit I could have made one swing and backed that trailer in there I do it all day long as a local trucker.
@djghostonthewheels your gonna look like an idiot. we all do our first months. and after a few months you'll still have an off day once in a while and you can't back to save ur life. turn your radio off if you don't want to hear the criticism. but then one day you'll hit a very difficult spot dead on in the first try. it'll make it all worth it
WOW I was getting stressed just watching him. LOl but with all fairness I rememebr when I first started driving. and the white knuckle and beads of sweat on my forehead everytime I had to back up. but man oh man you could have parked a B52 in that hole LOL.
How can some get a CDL when they can't back up ? Everyone has to start somewhere, but this guys instincts are all wrong. It's obvious they've had little or no training. I find it very scrary !!!!!!!
its not the drivers fault, he is the one thats trying to learn. the spotter on the other hand didnt have a clue on how to direct him. thats the scary thing,
i can drive better than this and i haven't even been driving for a week. Hauling grain for the family farm with no cdl and can drive circles around this clown.
Seeing shit like this makes me glad I started on a lot smaller truck. Its a lot better starting on a smaller truck, trailer what ever.

Interesting note on Schneider telling newbies to get "on the job training". When does a newbie driver trying to make a living have the free time to practice backing up in a lot with cones or markers? You can't reasonably use other rigs as cones when learning. Talk about a baptism of fire.

dont see a problem get your tandems close to the parked trailer and hit it hard other than they need to put a ball gag on the spotter

Good luck!

a 53 with tandems is cakewalk compared to blindside backin my 48 spread axle into a tight spot at a truck stop. experience is everything. we all gotta start somewhere.

The problem Schneider driver is having is that he turns hard right and goes forward. Then backs up at a hard right as well. Should go forward at hard left then back up hard right. Then straighten out and you're in the hole.

wtf if he cant back the truck he shouldnt be behind the wheel full stop what happens if he gets in a jam somewhere in a busy public spot ie an accident or something hows he gonna manage then.......
mrsuperrodge 1 year ago
@mrsuperrodge Read the info on the video. It isn't the drivers fault it is their trainer and whoever hired the guy to train people.
olstar18 1 year ago
@olstar18 point taken but....if this guy aint confident enough to do it he shouldnt be behind the wheel ive my hgv license since i was 18 and never failed as bad as this fella this looks like a very poor attempt your either cut out for it or your not and this guy looks like he aint cut out for it or else hes a slow learner its not like its a tight space hes trying to back into its a big yard!!!
mrsuperrodge 1 year ago
@mrsuperrodge Again read the info. During their training they only backed up once. How many times did you backup before you got your license.

direct998 1 year ago
@direct998 You forgot about CR England who clearly doesn't give a 3825 about any of their drivers. All they care about is their drivers move their freight and don't give a $#!t if their driver has legal issues to tend to at home and has communicated that innumerable times. They may get you home if requested 6 mos in advance

I'll be a greenhorn myself after I retake my road test and get my CDL and there is no reason why people on here are talking shit to a new driver better stop and think I bet some of you were in worse predicaments than this driver how do you think you got experience practicing right I don't see any other way you got it so give the new drivers respect or shut your fucking mouths and keep your comments to yourselves
godblessasiangirls 1 year ago
When I was 17 I went to work for a government contracted company that fueled aircraft on a Navel base. The job was to drive a truck pulling 5000 gallons of JP5 and fuel aircraft. To pass the test and drive the truck I had to back the truck and trailer into the shop instead of pulling thru, with no formal training and a regular drivers license....passed on the first try(never pulled forward to realign).
superstocktx 1 year ago
It does take practice, they need to practice on their own. You can't expect the company to baby sit a grown ass person. If he/she has a CDL and is trained to drive a semi then they are legal and safe to drive. You can't be scared of the trailer, take some time and practice on your own where there isn't anything to run into. "I only got to back up once in training" is no fricken excuse.
philsime 1 year ago
we have a similar issue in Australia!! Big companies advertise for these people to leave their office jobs, put them through a big 'training' school, and all of a sudden theyre let loose on the highways!!!!

And yes, practice is the key.
mrblanche 1 year ago 2
All of you professional drivers that are talking crap should take a trip down memory lane. How well did you do the 2nd time you backed up a 53' trailer? It is not an easy task. But you do get better wiht practice.
I was in the same boat as this team. When I was in training I only got to back once and it took me forever to do it. And now after backing up about a million times I can do it 100X better.

instructor shouldnt be on the passenger side, i understand shes watching the trailer hes backing up to, but ive trained a few drivers, and i stay on the driver side and move with the truck, and a quick squat and peek under the trailer will tell you how close he is, being on the passenger side is just stupid when training. your making the trainee have to move his head way to much that way.
