Hello I am taking beginner salsa courses and I now understand I am learning the on1 timing. What is the "purpose" of the on2 timing or of have different counts?
I think if you have a good leader (male) and a good follower (fem) of course it should not matter dancing is feeling it!!!!! some people r so worry about counting instead of dancing. what you should tell people counting is to have a basic idea but go and have fun!!!! and men please be good leaders if your partener looks good you will look great
@tzuchienchiu Puerto Rican On2 is the same as the NY On2 except that men start going forward (breaking on the 2 beat) instead of back. Basically NY On2 is on ladies timing (women break forward on count 2) while PR On2 is on men's timing (men break forward on count 2). Hope this helps!
I dance on1 and on2 depends on who i'm dancing with...correct me if I'm wrong but, can you also say that there's a difference on where you put emphasis. For instance, I think that on1 emphasis goes on the 1 and 5 counts, whereas on2 emphasis goes on the 2 and 6 counts.
@MaNiTo973 Yes, but we just wanted to answer a quick question for early salseros/as that wonder which style they are learning in their local classes. On2 is danced to the clave (and of course there is 3-2 or 2-3 clave for the 2-3 or 6-7 emphasis, but we didn't want to go there yet) :-)
@apersaud Sorry but I think that this is mistaken: How can you say that you dance on2 to the clave when in the 3-part of the Son Clave the emphasis is on 1, 2 1/2 and 4? If you include the Rumba Clave, things are even more complicated: What are on2 dancers doing on 4 1/2? You can just as well say that you dance on1 on the clave (and would be just as mistaken).
If you are dancing on2, then you are, in my opinion, dancing on the "clap" of the Conga's Tumbao. The clave does not help here at all.
@stephanschleim These video are meant for beginners and we try to keep it very simple in order provide a quick understanding : are they learning on1 or on2 in class? This way new dancers don't feel overwhelmed and become discouraged early on from learning salsa dancing. Feel free to provide a more technical video explanation, we would love to share it!
Hey Anthony! Thanks for the informative video. I've been dancing salsa for about a year and a half now. Your vids have helped alot in my learning. Although i gotta say I really liked the audio podcast where u talk about salsa music. Another one of those would be awsome.
I would just like to thank all of those who instruct on salsa steps as well as the pattern sequences. You have been most helpful over the years I have been learning from.
Now I have all of the moves dance with over 120 girls a week here in L.A. and my friends are very competitve.
Anthony this was really helpful. Dancing it to music would make it even more helpful. Great work and keep posting these videos! You've helped my dancing improve a ton!
That's cool, Anthony, I'm learning on1. We settle on 1,2,3 and turn the lady on 5 for simple moves (as you know-duh me!) Can you explain in your next video the count process for on2 timing. I love your videos and iphone app, thanks for sharing. Mucho respect from London, England.
i love u salsa <3

@evrencp Depends on your location's social salsa scene. In San Diego, we have a good mixture of on2 and on1.
