Prototypes evolved from almost road-legal sportscars in the 1970s. They're still called sportscars and it's "sportscar racing" due historical reasons and to separate them from other racing categories. Even in today's Le Mans Prototypes the heritage is there - regulations say they must have [in theory] space for a passenger seat.

In 1989 the championship was officially called FIA World Sports-Prototype Championship. But it is generally referred as the World Sportscar Championship.
