What a Queen. First saw her perform about twenty-two years ago and of course she'd already been the Goddess/Queen for over thirty years then. Certainly was in the vein of Billie Holiday in her natural phrasing. Of course she developed her own individual style. Will be missed. RIP my Queen...
nitpickers used to say her pitch was off, but Abbey sang straight to the heart and the nub of everything and will always be one of the strong things about how we walk.
Outstanding! I first saw her in person with Betty Carter at the San Francisco Jazz Festival, but never fully explored her music until recently (the past three years). I saw her on the upper west side in NYC when I was leaving from a Salsa class. I'm 53, my salsa buddies were all under 30 and none were familiar with her. Meanwhile, I was in awe, from that point, I began to search for her music, listen to it, and buy it. I now wish I had spoken to her.
I saw her perform years ago at the Barns at Wolftrap. When she came to the stage and began to sing, I started crying. It was like being reunited with a long lost friend.
reunited with a kindred soul, a human being ALWAYS singing directly from a heart and a mind that never bowed in any direction, be it commercialism, passing fancies or - the most cunning seductor especially for many so-called "jazz" singers we're being flooded with at the moment - vanity.
Abbey Lincoln's art transcended the borders of jazz, Great Black Music, folk or whatever you may call it and in the words of Duke Ellington she was BEYOND CATEGORY. We miss her madly.
I put her right up there with billie holiday.... also: she was certainly her own being... with her political activism. Just an amazing woman... ! Thanks for the tribute!
Happy belated B-Day Abby, one beautiful sista !

@Motownize "...like being reunited with a long lost friend." I had a similar feeling when I saw her in person. Thanks for the comment.
