I think 9:55 is seriously one of the most amazing moments of classical music. All this intensity builds up from the brass, but then ALL OF A SUDDEN, it dies down into some of the most beautiful harmonies I have EVER heard. So unexpected, and such pure genius. Wagner may have been a controversial figure in musical history, but there is no doubt that this is music at its best.
Interesting Fact of the Day: Wagner's Flying Dutchman overture was used as a theme for radio broadcasts in Germany from 1942-1943. The broadcasts were part of a psychological warfare campaign against the German Navy by a US Navy secret cell called OP-16-W. Commander Robert Lee Norwood (a cover name) would make routine broadcast to belittle German Navy success claims.
Flying Dutchman was selected as the theme music because of its popularity with German music lovers.
I hear the beginning of this on "What's Opera, Doc?" How come nobody really even bothered to make an AMV involving SpongeBob's The Flying Dutchman with this aptly named Overture?

Outstanding!!! Karl Böhm is one of the greatest interpreters of Wagner's music. Probably the greatest!
