  • I must have listened to this song at least 400 times, but every time I hear it, I have to give it the whole listen-through. My favorite song by any band. It's a shame only a handful of people realize it, though.

  • Don't worry Miss Leslie. I don't think you're uncool. I don't want to meet you around the corner, but I respect you. Truly.

  • He stopped me and said, "Child I love you regardless

and there's nothing you could do that would ever change this.

I'm not angry. It happens. But you just can't do it again."

    <3

  • Oberst's masterpiece

  • i love this song. by the way . . . what's for supper?

  • This song is like a work of art... Just this one time he sung it, just this one time he relished each word.

Connor sings like one on the verge of a break down, finally releasing all his pent up anger towards everyone & any everything he ever dispised. It's like he means every word so it makes the lyrics even greater <3

  • The death of one man never benefits another man. The $hit from one fan never outwits another clan. A featherless eagle shouldn't boast it's wingspan!

  • This is Bright Eyes' best song. Period.

  • @garylindsay34 I second this!

  • @garylindsay34 I third this!

  • The only terrorists are the puppets in government and the degenerates who control their strings in the Federal Reserve. Educate yourself and learn what's really going on.

  • Attn: any writers of this shit attempt at a "song" and anything like it, kill your fucking self, for me. Much obliged. P.s. I didn't like it

  • @iFish88 I don't fully understand you, friend, but one dead 14 year old boy is coming your way. I'll do anything to please you, as you know. Because love is anything real in life (so life does exist too, very smart of you, my friend)

I will now, get this knife out of my mother's kitchen

  • @11Jurriaan Normally, i'd caution: DFTT. But your reply is so perfect i can understand why you just HAD to post it. BTW this excellent song reminds me of Bob Dylan!

  • unleashedanarchy - yes, being proud we were able to kill the most evil person on the planet made me ashamed to be human as well...

  • @TheLesley718 You do know why he killed all those people right? He thought they were evil, and deserved it. Now, remind me why you think it's okay to kill him and sacrifice thousands of civillian lives in the process?

  • I think we've probably all been "staring too long at the screen." Anonymity may seem to be the safest posture, but really, it's not. It occurred to me this morning that we've only got two basic options: to love (and forgive), or to go crazy. The second option, sadly, is still the most popular.

  • Stop fighting guys, To love and to be loved. Its terrible that bad things happen.

  • I can always trust this man to be there. These songs are like always in my brain.

  • Fucking genius.

  • @GrievousAngelProduct I don't think it's fair to equate Conor on Dylan's scale, if only for Dylan's influence on his generation, his mass exposure, and his extremely enviable career, and I agree with what you say... But I would never overlook Oberst's use of metaphors... I mean, "Your eyes must do some raining, if you're ever gonna grow" likening people with plants... "You see stars that clear, have been dead for years, but the idea just lives on," a metaphor on God, and they go on and on

  • 'Chimes of Freedom' by Dylan:

Even though a cloud's white curtain in a far-off corner flashed

An' the hypnotic splattered mist was slowly lifting

Electric light still struck like arrows, fired but for the ones

Condemned to drift or else be kept from drifting

Tolling for the searching ones, on their speechless, seeking trail

For the lonesome-hearted lovers with too personal a tale

An' for each unharmful, gentle soul misplaced inside a jail

An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing.

  • Conor is not Dylan, but he is a great lyricist. Dylan has continued writing excellent songs for decades, and often presented his message indirectly with metaphors, personification and other lyrical trickery. Like Dylan's lyric ' . . . unharmful gentle souls'. He negated or flipped 'harmful' so it became an adjective similar to 'gentle'. I think of it as a double-negative. Check out 'Mr. Tambourine Man' and 'Chimes Of Freedom' by Dylan.

  • Conors' lyrics paint a clear image for me, word by word . His choice of words is severely influencing. I'm 60 and I dig most of Bright Eyes work.

  • EPIC SONG

  • :)

  • AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  • The comments about Osama reminded me of the day he died. "USA! USA! USA!" That crowd of deathcheering freaks still scare me. I'm never gonna forget them dancing around and worshipping their great god Obama and his slaying of the great satanic beast. Pitiful. It made me ashamed to be human.

  • @unleashedanarchy You're a baby. An awful person died. Americans celebrated. Who gives a fuck?

  • @youhavegeniusshins Ohhhh! Awful person. Yep it's really twisted and rotten to kill an old man watching cartoons. He's totally a poltergeist, channeling to the taliban. We spent forty million dollars on killing an old man. Yep and thanks for the profanity. I do care about where my taxes go.

  • @PaleMoons I mean it's really twisted and rotten to watch watch cartoons. I mean for goodness sakes he watched spongebob.

  • @PaleMoons You're welcome cocksucker.

  • @youhavegeniusshins Ohh! That's really clever ;) You must of done some deep thinking on that one.

  • @youhavegeniusshins

This. I hate when people overreact about these things.

  • @unleashedanarchy WOOHOO! AMERICA!

  • @unleashedanarchy Seriously, he only killed what, 2,000 something people? Why did we even go after him?

  • @ANeonTiger Terrorism kills a couple thousand americans, we go to war and spend billions and billions of dollars. How many people die EVERYYEAR from malaria, dirty water, ect ect....how much to we spend on that? it's not about how many people die, it how. we don't care about malaria because it doesn't make us feel vulnarable, terrorism does. we are co selfcentred, the first world is wasted on us.

  • @setiwoh Okay you bleeding heart liberal. No one man causes malaria deaths or dirty water. Osama directly caused the violent deaths of over 2,000 people. That's why people wanted justice.

  • @ANeonTiger Westerners cause it by wasting huge amounts of resources when there could be enough to go around. Of course, it's easier to be critical of someone else's thoughts and preach about "justice". Who the fuck are you or anyone to decide what justice is or isn't?

  • @lovefromeponine Please go look up "cause" in a dictionary. It's not Westerners' fault that people die of malaria or other diseases in third world countries.

  • @ANeonTiger fair enough. justice is worth it, but if we are willing to fight for justice, why don't we fight against poverty, or racism, or any of the other thousand of problems all over the world, and within our own borders. why do we really only care when someone delibratly attacks us?

  • @ANeonTiger for fucks sake! that's what they want to you to believe god damnit! and dick cheyney makes pipelines and think it's right to polute. listen to immortal technique please. Think about how Afghanistan has all that oil and all those drugs!

  • @unleashedanarchy you must be a idealistic teenager. Hate / fear / and death monger-ers need to be put away. lets celebrate the death of Osama as a victory for the human race. Its this structure of power that lets you get on the internet and act out and protest it. In lots of countries you would be killed for talking negative about the leadership. Its on the backs of many hard working people you are allowed to voice your pathetic & ignorant opinion.

  • @eRRRRs It's not that Osama should live or that Obama's actions were wrong. What's sad is the fact that people were so bloodthirsty, so hateful. It wasn't "I'm glad he's dead, now the world's safer", it was "I'm happy to think he's burning in hell for eternity". That is sick and wrong, to not be content with your own safety and happiness, but to also need the belief that your enemy is in pain forever. That kind of hatred is dangerous, but for some, it's not enough to love and to be loved

  • @unleashedanarchy why because you don't think he had anything to do with it or do you think the usa should have let it go.

  • @unleashedanarchy your sucha stereotypical indie hippie for that one. the way you worded it especially.

no hate, it just made me giggle.

  • @Dalton856Cedarville Ahahahaha, Evvie. You WOULD say that. ^_^ god, I love this song; Richard said to me Child, I love you regardless<3.I can't believe I caught you on here.. Well, I can but still; small world. =]

  • @crackedcompass are you implying we know each other?

    do we?

  • @Dalton856Cedarville hmm, maybe not. sorry, maybe i just thought you were someone else.. my bad. Take it easy. [ahaha.]

  • @Dalton856Cedarville yeah but he was right.

  • @unleashedanarchy Cool username, bro.

  • @unleashedanarchy You are very cynical

  • @shmonnorshmusie and you are also retarded.

  • oh conor. with every song i swear, just puts it perfectly.

  • Eight minutes and 36 seconds of Bright Eyes goodness?! <3 the length of this song is good enough to make me happy for a very long time

  • There's worse things than being alone

  • @kieranlabbe97 i have this tattoed on me

  • @C4LLI3HUMM3L that sounds like a wonderful tattoo =]

  • Good song to vent to. Preach it Conor!

  • pretty much love these guys! they're kinda melancholly and happy a perfect mixture if you ask me....i guess thats why i love them and The Cure...:)

  • Conor Oberst is my favorite lyricist. .. and Bright Eyes has had a major impact in my life. .. But, Mike Mogis helps just as much with Bright Eyes as Conor. .. They work amazingly together. ..

  • @DocCereal So true. So many people forget how important each member in the band is. They wanna say its all Conor, but its not. He is definitely the driving force, but they all play a huge part in the sound that is Bright Eyes.

  • This song still gives me chills, 9 years later. I'm not a huge Bright Eyes fan but he knocks this one out of the park.

  • I shit myself when I heard this song.

  • Just found this song, and wow they're amazing

  • This is the first song I listened to after Osama was killed -

"As they take eye for an eye until no one can see, we must stumble blindly forward, repeating history. "

Very glad that Osama can do no more harm, concerned about future reprisals.

  • @atakarmamusicvideo I too think that the lyrics to this song speaks a lot of what is happening in the world right now.

  • this is on a par with any of dylan's 7 minute-long-story-songs.

no, it's even better; it's perfect.

  • definetly one of his best song. its like the only song of this length that i listen to all the way.masterpiece

  • lets not.

  • I usually listen to all the songs on one album for a week or two, get sick of them, and move on to the next one. I've been listening to this song for years and it never gets old. Some of the best music ever written, no doubt.

  • @tread8888 im the same way with music, and just like you i have a few songs that never get old. "if i could give all my love" by counting crows, i bet you might like it if we are anything else alike.

  • no i am not singing for you - woo!

  • Best song by far Conor Oberst has been involved with.

  • Can someone please tell me what the woman is saying in the background at the VERY beginning of the song?

  • All you goddamn people... I love you all!

  • Comment removed

  • This is my first meeting with this kind of music. I must say... I love it...

  • Vibrato much?

  • Bright Eyes reminds me of Bob Dylan. Don't take that wrong, I know sound wise they are nothing the same, don't wanna end up like the poor NSN girl.. But their songs are both more poetic the musical? If that makes since :) Beautiful as always, in Conor's negative-positive way. Makes you think think think

  • @MrRainy678 uh welcome to 10 years ago when everyone was comparing Conor to Bob Dylan. Cheers!!

  • @cubbies4e There isn't a comparison to be made.

  • I always wondered what my favorite song was.

Then I remembered that every time I come back to listen to this song, even after a year, I get the same sort of epiphany and feeling that this is special and that this is someone who is pouring their heart out.

I love the other version with the extra 2 minutes of sounds at the end too. It used to scare me but I think it's very peaceful now.

Is anyone seeing them in Chicago when they come in March, i think?

  • 4 people shit themselves

  • such a terrible singer but a terrific writer

  • @Pow3r0fSugg3stion

I don't understand why people say he's a terrible singer. I just think that the way he sings reflects who he is and how he feels. He doesn't try to strive for autotuned perfection. It makes what he writes and how he represents things all the more real. That's what real music is.

  • @Pow3r0fSugg3stion i fucking love his voice

  • Rihanna songs get views of 50 Million Plus.... this has not even 75,000......terrible

  • @jmakrez it's a reflection of society. just be happy we're on the minority side.

  • wooohoo gna see them in april in pomona, ca and at coachella!!!!

  • Best lyricist EVER!

  • @skezzbox

I agree. I think that Morrissey is a lyrical genius, (don't judge me *g*) but nothing compared to Conor! makes me so happy.

  • First Day of My Life was deffinately influenced by this.. Such a beautiful composition. One of my greatest infulences and to many others..

  • the first time me and my 2nd girlfriend had sex, this song was playing...thus making me a huge Bright Eyes fan.

  • Coner's music has destroyed my life, but also rebuild it. i lover you man, in a no homo way, wait mebay i do mean it in a homo way.

  • @cobainfan101 how has it destroyed your life

  • Not the greatest vocals but definitely hear the heart in his singing. Nice lyrics too, not the dumb crap you hear nowadays,

  • conor oberst's words are the philosophy of my life

gotten through many tough times because of those words

  • O AND THE BLUES, I'VE GOT THE BLUES, THAT'S ME

    overwhelmed..

  • RIGHT!?!?!?!?!?

  • He is NOT singing for us.

  • @BeckyTheBeast

He's talking about critics. Not his listeners...

  • im such an idiot! ive known of this band for years but i never got around to lstening to them until NOW, what the fuck have i been doing with my time????.

  • It makes me happy to see only three dislikes:) I love him. So much.

  • @wordsfromjames I don't think that Dylan lacked backbone. If you listen to Masters of War, he literally says he wants them to die. Conor has backbone, but let's just stop the Dylan comparison until his "Self Portrait" comes out.

  • it makes me want to cry every time i hear this song

  • Conor has the one thing that Dylan lacks.. a backbone.

Don't let the vibrato in his voice fool you, he points the finger at the man at the top, 'cowboy presidents', something Dylan never had the political intellegence, courage or audacity to do.

Oberst incredibly has balanced the talents of both Dylan and Young, and for that reason I think the history books will hold him in as high if not a higher regard, only time will tell.

  • @wordsfromjames no way in hell history will hold him as high as either Dylan OR Young. No way. If you knew a bit or two about the intention behind Dylan's music, you wouldn't make the comparison of the political intention.

  • @wordsfromjames The finger should not go to the "man at the top". Blaming one person for America's problems is just stupid, blame the entire gov if you want to blame something. But honestly I doubt most Americans could solve a god damn thing in any political office, so not much reason to just blame the ones who got it.

  • so many unfortunate truths in this song.. but i love it

  • 3 people dont enjoy timpani rolls...

  • I can fap to this.

  • @InterpolAntics3012 FJ ftw.

  • oberst slays this

  • Wow.... Amazing writer

  • i just shit myself

  • Fuck, I am going to die alone...

  • I can't speak my mind, so Conor does it for me. :P

  • @Naruvatar2 but Bright Eye's is the best band ever .

  • @Naruvatar2 Are you fucking kidding me. Never put Bright Eyes in a category with Never Shout Never. That should be considered a sin.

  • @Twinkcycle hey i'm gonna fight you!

  • @Twinkcycle nice one bruv! too true.

  • @Twinkcycle They are 2 completely different artists I love both equally

  • @Twinkcycle A god damn sin.

  • @Twinkcycle I wish I could like this comment one million fucking times.

  • @Twinkcycle I'm a pretty big fan of both nsn and Bright Eyes, but I'd have to agree with you..

  • @Naruvatar2 Gross its nothing like nevershoutnever.

  • @Naruvatar2 dont EVER say such a thing again

  • @Naruvatar2 Nevershoutnever? Have you had a fucking lobotomy you fucking retard?

  • @izaak03

dude, i think you and everyone else took my comment the wrong way

    so yeah..

    fuck off

  • @Naruvatar2 ... I am left speechless by your infinite ignorance

  • How I failed to love and to be loved, because my old man can't stand the sound of your voice or hear what you say because of it. I thought you could come through for me for good with a little empathy but not in no damn way would he choose to listen to these words "child I love you regardless and there's nothing you could do that would ever change this. I'm not angry, it happens it happens but you just can't do it again" and it sounded like 30 words but it sounds like I have to hear it from urdad

  • Ok Conor I got through to you once or twice about Desaparecidos and how I'm not Denver Daily's bass guitarist and the whole Natalie Portman long haireds.Cully pleaded with me to get through to you, though I lost your email, and could never post your myspace. fans come in for shit. oh and the bass I'm not Cully's bass, not me. I name dropped you even Bobby Zimmerman at the Desaparecidos of our generation, THAT'S ME... not Noah, NOT Adam.

  • brilliant

  • Love this

  • @TheEzzy95

I should shove your fucking head in a meat grinder and then use your brains as fish chum..

Because you're brains being in the belly of a shark would be the best place for them to be if you talk shit about this. I hope the shark shits you're useless membrane inside a deep, deep trench where no human has to put up with it.

    Suck it.

  • chills down my spine. that's what this is.

  • Conor Oberst brings the truth about life into music, easily the most underrated artist ever, but I wanna keep it that way..

  • @piercethevale How funny you should mention how "we" (whoever the right fuck that is) are not impressed by this artist. Especially in the song where he explicitly states that he's not doing this to make you happy. "I do not read the reviews/No I am not singing for you". Besides the fact that Bright Eyes is a positively fantastic group, you managed to pick the one song to talk shit on where he says he doesn't care. Good job, man.

  • Comment removed

  • Where was it when i first heard the sweet sound of humility?

It came to my ears in the goddamn loveliest melody

  • Bright Eyes<3

  • @piercethevale I like you have to imput "Dont Shit Yourself" into all your replies. And its the internet. Feel free to say fuck

  • @piercethevale I am impressed.

  • Oberst is indeed a genius. Such a fucking powerful song.

  • this fool is an evil genius

  • Love Bright Eyes. Hate the fans.

  • I love him!

  • Long Live the Revolution.. :(

  • @piercethevale

this dude has more talent in his sperm than you and your 6 friends have had in your whole lives. what meoldy isnt somehow recycled?haha i hate you so much and i hardly even know you. easier to make fun of him than for you to make anything yourself, eh? whats your name man, i want to make fun of your songs! who wastches youtube with 6 people anyway? go outside and play!

  • @r0llskyay0 i love the way bright eyes fan's are so loyal and intillectual. its beautiful, much like oberst himself.

  • @piercethevale

when you say you have been in the music business, you are talking about cleaning the bathrooms at a record company? ever heard of a dude called eminem? hes sold more albums than God, and motherfucker is his favorite word. If you are an adult and you can't handle "god damn", you should get your balls checked out

  • One of his best...love the chicago act

  • @piercethevale Hide the children and cover your ears! A musician said "goddamn" a few times!

  • this is art o.O

    ~Nout

  • @piercethevale Conservative person is conservative.

  • to question the last comment, not that i generally do this, but, if you look at like 'dont think twice its alright' or similar, they portray a less hope fueled portrait thn this song. i mean.. 'to love, and to be loved' .. thats beautiful, after, from the lyrics, everything he's been through, its, if anything, hopeful at most, and more!

  • to question the last comment, not that i generally do this, but, if you look at like 'dont think twice its alright' or similar, they portray a less hope fueled portrait thn this song. i mean.. • plenty of hope here:-) if you are prepared to think about it?

  • By far and away the greatest of all Bright Eyes songs. Shear brilliance

  • Some people don't like his voice but I think it is orgasmic!

  • @piercethevale Is that the royal we?

  • I can't get enough of this song. It's perfection, so it feels short to me. I just noticed today that it was 8 minutes and 36 seconds long. Conor Oberst - the master of time illusion.

  • only conor oberst could pull off an 8 minute song

  • @Fleedmn Led Zep much? lol

  • @Fleedmn What about Neil Young?

  • @Fleedmn What about Neil Young?

  • absolutely brilliant with these lyrics. I never thought i'd love an 8-minute song with so little variation in the music so much. This has to be one of my favorite songs ever, and definitely one of my favorite Bright Eyes/Conor Oberst songs.

  • @ohhcomely How about "The Past is a Grotesque Animal"? I'm fairly certain that song goes on for over 10 minutes with the same music. That song to me is perfection.
