Geez, every time I see a clip on this guy, I get depressed while smiling.
malencholy is it?
Yeah, I'd love to have seen how Bill would have evolved with time. His humour, his jokes, his philosophy. He missed the whole bag of jokes when Bush was around. Talk about a mountain of ammunition of jokes about that guy.
Bush was a walking comedy act. It would actually be hard to find a script for his gags. it would be like directly copying a script. Bill, we miss you!
"You know all that money we spend on weapons and defense every year? Trillions of dollars. Instead, if we spent that money feeding and clothing the poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over, not one human being excluded ... not one ... we could as one race explore inner and outer space together in peace, forever." - Bill Hicks
notice at the end of the interview, when Clive is closing, he's like smacking the table as if he's a judge! "order!" "...oooorrrdderr!" "ORDER I SAY!"
Clive Anderson's actually really good here. You can tell Bill respected him at least, because he roasted him a little bit - most interviewers are just boring and lick ass.
genuinely heart-warming interview. bill seems relaxed, and clive is clive - a truly sharp and witty mind who's job it is to interview -yes- but also to make people laugh, and anyone that can get bill laughing is ok by me.
lol,Clive is Constantly Pulling jokes At him..And you can see Bills Expressions and His responses that He isn't pleased..The Laugh is Just a Falsity..Because otherwise he'd probaly Whack him,Lmao.
"If it was'nt for the death penalty, we would never have easter" he told that joke on both English and American TV and the audience response was very different. I believe it might still be a tabu making fun of religion in the US especially Christianity. and in Europe, most people don't care at all. After all, they made Life of Brian 13 years prior to this... it just puzzles me how liberal the Americans are about most things, but when it comes to Christ, its all conservative.
That was a very nervous interview years ago that seemed to settle as Bill got to do a few lines from his routine. I don't think Clive Anderson's frantic delivery suited Bill's laid back persona but at least some of Bill's outlooks on life translated well into the UK audience. I think this is why Bill did very well here in the UK and was more appreciated here than in his native US.

Clive is very funny is this. Good form by both. Hicks seems impressed actually. Can't imagine many primetime US hosts coming close to the mark. Certainly not then.
How awesome was that interview...?! That was skilled play. Who said Bill Hicks never hit a punchline or had his jokes stole by Denis Leary? Bill HIcks stands alone as a great!

It's not the greatest interview. I think Bill's strength was in monologues not dialogues. Some comedians are better playing off someone, even better than their stand up. But imo Bill was the other way around.
@DuffPaddy1 It's uplifting to know that the sort of compliant, humourless trend-follower who eulogises our Lord Hicks doesn't like the supremely bright, genuinely witty and sparklingly funny Clive Anderson.
Towards the end of the interview was written all over Hicks' demeanour the deflation of having met one of the sharpest minds around in comedy at that time.
You see he had the good grace to concede this fact, as, despite Hicks not being a great comedian at all, he was a fairly decent chap.
For some reason i've always more than tolerated Clive Anderson and don't understand what people's problem with him is. He's not an amazing wit but he's not at all dull and copes really well here. Hmmm
@BarnacleGooseInvalid I've always felt the same way actually. Clive not being dull almost seems ironic when you consider his former profession as a solicitor/lawyer!
@qelgrun exactly, old-boy charm is not exactly a winner in my eyes but i've never been indisposed to mr. anderson. it's easy enough to latch onto the bits that have stuck and think less of him because he's interviewed some pretty impressive figures whom very few people can reeeally compare with (cf. peter cook), but in my mind he's always done the job well.
Considering that many of the best thinkers in history have been smokers, perhaps it's a bad thing that smoking is being so actively discouraged. People die no matter what and everything in moderation is surely a better life than trying to live forever with new health foods and diets we don't need in order to make the corporations that used to run tobacco companies another fortune. "I believe that pipe smoking contributes to a somewhat calm and objective judgment in all human affairs".-Einstein
@acinemajunkie who? Bill? If you're talking about Bill then ... wake the hell up!! It's not Bill who took things too seriously... it's us, the people who didn't take it seriously enough
@713FallenS07 Hey man. Smoking can give you more than just lung cancer. Bladder cancer, pancreatic cancer among others all have increased prevalence among smokers. I'm a fan of bill Hicks, just thought I'd correct you. Not telling you to "not smoke" though, that's your decision and your right.
@XerxesOmicron thanks for the last bit =] You're right, smoking can give many forms of cancer as can alchol or enough of any drug. Bill did die of pancreatic cancer in 94, (not 95 as i'd earlier stated =o my bad). He smoked, heavily..., he used to smoke pot for sure and i'm sure he tried LSD (he says this in a few of his gigs, "Look at bernie, he thinks he's a pig" lol). Anyways i just wanted to say yes you're correct, I'm not ignorant. Thanks.
I don't know why people are criticising Clive Anderson, he is a quick witted guy and Hicks seemed to enjoy the interview, what's the problem? They were actually friends and it's quite plain to see in this interview.
@HumanBornFree I never got that either... I have a feeling I may have missed something; but this is the internet after all. Seems like it's just cool to say that you hate Clive Anderson. Personally I don't see how anybody who has to watch the shit on modern UK TV can hate him, he is good value most of the time.
Can't stand Anderson, what exactly is he? He's not a good interviewer, goes out of his way to make guests feel awkward. The audience sound like they're all Islington luvvies he's met at some dinner party, laughing on cue. He's a total prat, not a comedian or an interviewer, bet he was a crap barrister too, how on earth did this berk ever get on television? Then again Channel 4 thinks they've got a diamond in Jimmy Carr. Says it all really.
just to let u know that clive anderson was just a puff of wind compared to bill hicks ,he as a former barister thought he could out talk anyone and "rip them" but he was just a lame fly by night that could only insult people for a laugh, silly little no necked balding middle classed twat,i dont think we''ll be talking about him years after his death, and can u remember anything about him apart from the beegees walk off,in which his pathetic humour exposed him for what he really is.
- Those mentioning that they're surprised at the reception Bill gets over there, I'll note that Doug Stanhope is a fucking rockstar over there and the vast majority rarely know his name or face here.
He's done spots as "The Voice of America" and is just incredibly well received. Given their reception of Bill and Doug and their offering of Ricky Gervais I'm actually beginning to wonder if their sense of humor is better overall. All three are legends to me.
AbultyR86 You forget that holland is one of the most openminded countries there are. And we have comedians here that the americans would find vulgar or cruel. I mean, in america you cant even curse on tv, over here they even curse in cartoons for kids.
@Sledge101 No. I barely respond to Youtube comments, but I felt a strong urge to tell you this. The two are not comparable. Hicks punched upwards, at the establishment and at greedy bastards. Boyle punches downwards at Downs syndrome sufferers and poor people. Hicks would have had a field day ranting about a scoundrel like Boyle.
@ohkaybear I agree with you. Comedy is about challenguing established and taken-for-granted beliefs and establishment figures rather than kicking people that are already down. At the risk of sounding pretentious, the great comedy of guys like Hicks and Doug Stanhope is about elevating people to question authority.
@ohkaybear I agree but ironically they come from the same place. Boyle said we are all just animals clinging on a rock through space. That speaks volumes about his philosophy.
Hicks used his insight to spread a message of love, Boyle uses his to spread a message of hate, but ultimately they both come from the same school of thought, everything really means nothing, unless it means something to u. I guess two sides of the same coin. I prefer Hicks version.
@purplenurps Hi purplenurps. I grew up with Bill in Houston, we went to the same schools. I became good friends with him in '75 - he was a funny kid and what could be called the 'class clown'. Our circle of friends would often hang out together. After we graduated from high school we went our separate ways, and Bill eventually found his fame. I miss him a lot.
@purplenurps "OH WE'RE ONLY ON THE INNURNET IT SHONDNLT MADDUR I'M AN IGNORANT LITTLE FUCK NUGGET AND YOU CAYN'T CHANGE NUFFIN ABOUT THAT CUZ I DOESN'T WEAR BLUE JEANS ONLY OVERALLS BA-HER-DERP"
That's the worst argument you could make. Really? Grammar shouldn't matter because you're not taking a fucking test on it? Sure, I guess you're right, unless if you want to be respected as a person with at least a single working brain cell. People like you are slowing down the progress of mankind.
@KraftyTheHatter Yes look at my comment you prick did i spell anything like that?.....No thought not. He took out one word and called me out on it, so fuck off you turd, honestly get cancer.
@purplenurps Have you heard of exaggerations? It's a common literary term. It's used by people sometimes to get their point across in a more hilarious and critical fashion. You'd know that if you didn't drop out of elementary school. Secondly, fuck you for being such a juvenile little dickslurp. YOU yourself are a cancer. A cancer to this society, a cancer to our entire race.
@KraftyTheHatter 'Elementary school' so you're American? So yes i take you're stupid so you've got an excuse. Also you didn't see the whole argument so how can you call me stupid? Look at the whole argument you prick and no people only use that to get their point across when they jump in the middle of arguments and realize they have nothing to say.
@purplenurps Alright, I'm assuming you're a eurofag, which explains your terribly disgusting behavior toward everyone. Anyway, I can call you stupid because you said "was" instead of "were". If that's not stupid then I don't know what is. And being from a specific country doesn't make me less of a person than you, you ignorant cockswipe. Also, if you look, that exaggeration was the beginning of the argument between you and me, so you just contradicted yourself. You're basically doing my job.
@KraftyTheHatter I'm european, so i hate everyone and you just call me a fag? There was no argument between me and you, you just got involved with my argument with 'ohkaybear'. So don't jump in random arguments and give your opinion, you fool.
@purplenurps When did I call you a fag? Anyway, I'm not going to continue arguing whether we're arguing or not. If you can't realize that we're arguing right now then you're dumber than I thought, and it's not even worth trying to explain that to you. It's just not fuckin' worth it. Also, how could you tell me not to jump into different arguments and voice my opinion when that's exactly what you did, even though it wasn't an argument to begin with? Do you realize how hypocritical you sound?
@KraftyTheHatter 'you're a eurofag'.....No i realize we are arguing but I had a problem with was you jumping in the middle of another argument i was having and calling me stupid. It wasn't even an argument i jumped into, read it again you tool. I never said you couldn't jump into the argument if you had a point to make. Look what i wrote i said i had a problem with you jumping in my argument and calling me stupid. You fucking idiot
@purplenurps Eurofag and faggot are two different things. If it's bad for me to tell my opinion to strangers, how is it not bad for you to do it yourself? Is it your ego trying to cover up the fact that you're just a huge fucking douche? Also, instead of advising me to reread something, why don't you read it again for yourself? YOU intruded into a conversation where you weren't needed. Really, read it again. You weren't in that until you acted like a complete dick to ohkaybear.
@KraftyTheHatter You still called me a fag though? that is the point. I never said it was you fool, you didn't give me your opinion on our argument though, you just jumped in calling me stupid even though you didn't read the argument. Look again it wasn't a conversation, one guy put a comment and the other guy hadn't responded yet and i didn't say it was wrong to jump into arguments. Look again it wasn't a conversation.
@purplenurps Nope, read my comment again. Different things, and you did say it was me. You said that I shouldn't jump into the middle of another argument, but you did the same thing. Somehow it's completely fine when you do that, but if I justify the sanctity of grammar and correct sentence structure, I'm wrong for doing it. Your argument has so many holes, and you keep telling me to reread your fucking comments. Why not read mine over again? You're just repeating yourself, and it's useless.
@KraftyTheHatter No seriously just read through my comments again. I said you shouldn't jump in and start calling me stupid and putting was instead of were, doesn't really give you any right to call me stupid, i'm pretty sure i can pick something small out of your comments to comment on. I'm repeating myself because you're not listening to me. Really if i'm so stupid anyway why are you still replying to me? Just piss off then, you jumped into the middle of an argument and just started......
@purplenurps Why don't I have the right to call you stupid, yet you have the right to say that I should honestly get cancer? What's more serious, me calling you a name or you wishing one of the worst diseases upon me? I'd go with the latter, but that's just one intelligent man's opinion. Why are you just avoiding the whole point about you doing the same thing?
@KraftyTheHatter If i ever jump on a middle of one of your arguments and start calling you stupid for no reason, then you wish cancer on me, deal? The name is worst. One more time *sigh* there wasn't an argument going on and i didn't jump in calling either guy stupid.
@purplenurps Life doesn't work like that, kid. There wasn't even an argument going on that you intruded in, there was like an agreement and then you jump in being a dick to ohkaybear because you're a hateful little dongmunch, then when he says that your grammar was wrong you retaliated with the "NO BIG DEAL, BRAH." maneuver. You lost this argument before it even started. I'm going to go smoke some reefer.
@KraftyTheHatter First of all this isn't an argument, you just started calling me stupid and i'm saying why call me stupid when you jump in my argument; complain when i call you out. ONE MORE TIME i don't care if you jump in the argument as long as you make a point, just don't jump in and call me stupid, got it? Tell me how i was being hateful? Yeah when he said my grammar was wrong, i said it's youtube not an english test, what's the problem? I wasn't being a dick like you........
@purplenurps It's an argument. Calling you stupid was my point. You were being hateful to me and ohkaybear, firstly by you saying to ohkaybear, "How do you know? Were you a personal friend of his? Thought not.....shut up" and what you said to me, "...fuck off you turd, honestly get cancer." That's mighty hateful and dickish of you, don'tcha think?
@purplenurps calling me stupid, i wouldn't care if you had even made a point about the argument that i was having originally. There you go i had to repeat myself again.
@jamesisadouche An enlightened man understands that he still is part of the people. If Hicks didn't go everywhere he was invited he wouldn't be who he was. Remember, we are talking about a man who didn't have a problem performing even in the worst shitholes where people would throw bottles at him and he would dodge. Bill Hicks was trying to convey the message that he is one of the people.
Bill come one MAN, you used 5 of your most famous stand up jokes during this interview..... i lost a little respect for him while wataching this.

@LeftWingPOG Sadly the great Bill Hicks passed in 95. Cancer. Not lung cancer incase thats what any non smokers think...
713FallenS07 11 months ago
@713FallenS07 Hey man. Smoking can give you more than just lung cancer. Bladder cancer, pancreatic cancer among others all have increased prevalence among smokers. I'm a fan of bill Hicks, just thought I'd correct you. Not telling you to "not smoke" though, that's your decision and your right.
XerxesOmicron 10 months ago
@XerxesOmicron it also makes you cool as a cucumber.
arewegoingtothezoo 10 months ago

Personally I don't see how anybody who has to watch the shit on modern UK TV can hate him, he is good value most of the time.

from the clips ive seen on youtube clive anderson talks back was a fucking trainwreck of a chat show. he is dreadful.
ThirdEyeOpen123 1 year ago
Can't stand Anderson, what exactly is he? He's not a good interviewer, goes out of his way to make guests feel awkward. The audience sound like they're all Islington luvvies he's met at some dinner party, laughing on cue. He's a total prat, not a comedian or an interviewer, bet he was a crap barrister too, how on earth did this berk ever get on television? Then again Channel 4 thinks they've got a diamond in Jimmy Carr. Says it all really.
flaxonx3 1 year ago
just to let u know that clive anderson was just a puff of wind compared to bill hicks ,he as a former barister thought he could out talk anyone and "rip them" but he was just a lame fly by night that could only insult people for a laugh, silly little no necked balding middle classed twat,i dont think we''ll be talking about him years after his death, and can u remember anything about him apart from the beegees walk off,in which his pathetic humour exposed him for what he really is.

Is Frankie Boyle at all comparable to Bill Hicks? I honestly don't know, I don't know Bill well enough.
Sledge101 1 year ago
@Sledge101 Boyle has no soul
ybot1983 1 year ago
@Sledge101 No. I barely respond to Youtube comments, but I felt a strong urge to tell you this. The two are not comparable. Hicks punched upwards, at the establishment and at greedy bastards. Boyle punches downwards at Downs syndrome sufferers and poor people. Hicks would have had a field day ranting about a scoundrel like Boyle.
ohkaybear 1 year ago 120
@ohkaybear Quite right... When you strip away the oh-so-trendy "edgyness" Boyle has pretty much nothing to say about anything,
RH98 1 year ago
@ohkaybear thats true i noticed Bill Hicks talks about that type of subject matter alot and i really like what he has to say
DiAboLiicz 11 months ago
@ohkaybear couldn't agree more with you, sir
RelativeBadger 11 months ago
@ohkaybear I agree with you. Comedy is about challenguing established and taken-for-granted beliefs and establishment figures rather than kicking people that are already down. At the risk of sounding pretentious, the great comedy of guys like Hicks and Doug Stanhope is about elevating people to question authority.
JLDoggard 9 months ago
@ohkaybear such a good fucking analogy- punching up and down. I will use that
almightyjass 9 months ago

That's the worst argument you could make. Really? Grammar shouldn't matter because you're not taking a fucking test on it? Sure, I guess you're right, unless if you want to be respected as a person with at least a single working brain cell. People like you are slowing down the progress of mankind.
KraftyTheHatter 6 months ago 3
@KraftyTheHatter Yes look at my comment you prick did i spell anything like that?.....No thought not. He took out one word and called me out on it, so fuck off you turd, honestly get cancer.
purplenurps 6 months ago
@purplenurps Have you heard of exaggerations? It's a common literary term. It's used by people sometimes to get their point across in a more hilarious and critical fashion. You'd know that if you didn't drop out of elementary school. Secondly, fuck you for being such a juvenile little dickslurp. YOU yourself are a cancer. A cancer to this society, a cancer to our entire race.
KraftyTheHatter 6 months ago 2
@KraftyTheHatter 'Elementary school' so you're American? So yes i take you're stupid so you've got an excuse. Also you didn't see the whole argument so how can you call me stupid? Look at the whole argument you prick and no people only use that to get their point across when they jump in the middle of arguments and realize they have nothing to say.
purplenurps 6 months ago
@purplenurps Alright, I'm assuming you're a eurofag, which explains your terribly disgusting behavior toward everyone. Anyway, I can call you stupid because you said "was" instead of "were". If that's not stupid then I don't know what is. And being from a specific country doesn't make me less of a person than you, you ignorant cockswipe. Also, if you look, that exaggeration was the beginning of the argument between you and me, so you just contradicted yourself. You're basically doing my job.
KraftyTheHatter 6 months ago 2
@KraftyTheHatter I'm european, so i hate everyone and you just call me a fag? There was no argument between me and you, you just got involved with my argument with 'ohkaybear'. So don't jump in random arguments and give your opinion, you fool.
purplenurps 6 months ago
@purplenurps When did I call you a fag? Anyway, I'm not going to continue arguing whether we're arguing or not. If you can't realize that we're arguing right now then you're dumber than I thought, and it's not even worth trying to explain that to you. It's just not fuckin' worth it. Also, how could you tell me not to jump into different arguments and voice my opinion when that's exactly what you did, even though it wasn't an argument to begin with? Do you realize how hypocritical you sound?
KraftyTheHatter 6 months ago
@KraftyTheHatter 'you're a eurofag'.....No i realize we are arguing but I had a problem with was you jumping in the middle of another argument i was having and calling me stupid. It wasn't even an argument i jumped into, read it again you tool. I never said you couldn't jump into the argument if you had a point to make. Look what i wrote i said i had a problem with you jumping in my argument and calling me stupid. You fucking idiot
purplenurps 6 months ago
@purplenurps Eurofag and faggot are two different things. If it's bad for me to tell my opinion to strangers, how is it not bad for you to do it yourself? Is it your ego trying to cover up the fact that you're just a huge fucking douche? Also, instead of advising me to reread something, why don't you read it again for yourself? YOU intruded into a conversation where you weren't needed. Really, read it again. You weren't in that until you acted like a complete dick to ohkaybear.
KraftyTheHatter 6 months ago
@KraftyTheHatter You still called me a fag though? that is the point. I never said it was you fool, you didn't give me your opinion on our argument though, you just jumped in calling me stupid even though you didn't read the argument. Look again it wasn't a conversation, one guy put a comment and the other guy hadn't responded yet and i didn't say it was wrong to jump into arguments. Look again it wasn't a conversation.
purplenurps 6 months ago
@purplenurps Nope, read my comment again. Different things, and you did say it was me. You said that I shouldn't jump into the middle of another argument, but you did the same thing. Somehow it's completely fine when you do that, but if I justify the sanctity of grammar and correct sentence structure, I'm wrong for doing it. Your argument has so many holes, and you keep telling me to reread your fucking comments. Why not read mine over again? You're just repeating yourself, and it's useless.
KraftyTheHatter 6 months ago
@KraftyTheHatter No seriously just read through my comments again. I said you shouldn't jump in and start calling me stupid and putting was instead of were, doesn't really give you any right to call me stupid, i'm pretty sure i can pick something small out of your comments to comment on. I'm repeating myself because you're not listening to me. Really if i'm so stupid anyway why are you still replying to me? Just piss off then, you jumped into the middle of an argument and just started......
purplenurps 6 months ago
@purplenurps Why don't I have the right to call you stupid, yet you have the right to say that I should honestly get cancer? What's more serious, me calling you a name or you wishing one of the worst diseases upon me? I'd go with the latter, but that's just one intelligent man's opinion. Why are you just avoiding the whole point about you doing the same thing?
KraftyTheHatter 6 months ago
@KraftyTheHatter If i ever jump on a middle of one of your arguments and start calling you stupid for no reason, then you wish cancer on me, deal? The name is worst. One more time *sigh* there wasn't an argument going on and i didn't jump in calling either guy stupid.
purplenurps 6 months ago
@purplenurps Life doesn't work like that, kid. There wasn't even an argument going on that you intruded in, there was like an agreement and then you jump in being a dick to ohkaybear because you're a hateful little dongmunch, then when he says that your grammar was wrong you retaliated with the "NO BIG DEAL, BRAH." maneuver. You lost this argument before it even started. I'm going to go smoke some reefer.
KraftyTheHatter 6 months ago
@KraftyTheHatter First of all this isn't an argument, you just started calling me stupid and i'm saying why call me stupid when you jump in my argument; complain when i call you out. ONE MORE TIME i don't care if you jump in the argument as long as you make a point, just don't jump in and call me stupid, got it? Tell me how i was being hateful? Yeah when he said my grammar was wrong, i said it's youtube not an english test, what's the problem? I wasn't being a dick like you........
purplenurps 6 months ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@purplenurps It's an argument.

@jamesisadouche An enlightened man understands that he still is part of the people. If Hicks didn't go everywhere he was invited he wouldn't be who he was. Remember, we are talking about a man who didn't have a problem performing even in the worst shitholes where people would throw bottles at him and he would dodge. Bill Hicks was trying to convey the message that he is one of the people.
