I want to start making my own snare, yet the price i priced out was about $460! for that price, i would get two very decent snares brand new! the lugs price were like $7 EACH! pretty expensive.. and they were the exact same ones as yours! where'd you get yours? thanks!
Yeah, tube lugs are usually pretty expensive. I'm based in Scotland, UK, so I don't know very many suppliers in the USA. I have heard of one big shop in the USA called Drum Foundry, who seem to have some pretty good prices on their website. Give them a try, or have a look on Ebay.
wow, can you tell me how you do those stroke rolls at the beginning, they sound just like bill ward and john bonham, i havent played in 2 years and im really rusty and need some help again lol
It cost around £100 for the shell, the lugs were about £40 and the snare mechanism about £20. I used hoops, heads and snare wires from another snare which I don't use very often. The best place to find all the parts is Ebay!
A solid stave shell drum would cost around £400 for a complete snare, so you can save quite a bit by putting it together yourself!
The shell was made by Keith Thom from Ayrshire in Scotland. I'm not sure if he is still making drum shells, but I noticed from your profile you are from Australia ? Try Ebay (search for "Stave Drum Shell") and you will probably find some drum builders in your area who will be able to supply you with a shell.
i didn't expect that much ring out of that wood shell! it's beefier that metal, but still has that open, ringy sound. did you tune it the way you do your supraphonic?? i still can't get over how amazing it sounds... great snare!
I usually tune all my snares pretty tight. It is actually a bit too ringy for me even though it's a two ply Emporer coated head on top. Would be even more ringy with an Ambassador! I may need to use a bit of moongel to control it in future, but didn't wanna use it for this video so you can hear the real sound of the drum!
Yeah a piece of moonget or gaft tape will clear that up no problem. But, you might want to record it with that ring and take it out later in the mix. It sounds great mic'd. Sometimes the mics hear things differently then the ears.
It sounds soft :)
