Actually I think it's more the robot's power supply to the camera and video transmitter; I made it in the simplest way possible, and I think it's noisy enough to add some bad effects. Also there are the normal losses during the radio transmission.
A lot of real robotics researchers are computer engineers actually; it's one of the more popular areas for robotics researchers. You get a combination of electrical engineering and programming, which is pretty much exactly what you need to build robots. At least at my college, I was able to also take some computer science courses that dealt with AI, plus a computer engineering course that was specifically robotic motion.
