The idea that emotions are identified from cognitive activity following arousal and physiological changes confirms a failure by researchers to recognise a difference between emotion, as a phenomenon and subjective experience ,and the feelings thoughts and behavior which follow from arousal of emotion. Schacter and Singer go half way towards countering earlier theories but are still locked into the belief there are many fundamental discrete emotions i.e.other sets of "ghosts in the machine"!
