Far from being dangerous Mali is a very safe country; I have been there on my own on a number of occasions, the latest time was just in January 2009.. Shortly before then there had been some attacks by Tuareg rebels in the Western area, but that last remnant of the Tuareg rebellion ceased in March 09, when a final Peace deal was signed. The US over-reacted to the situation, which some say they have themselves been fomenting over recent years.
