Coupland loves himself. His whole mantra of "no past" is hypocritical considering most of his work is explorations of his current states, moments, months, years or nostalgically decades before. He is no longer out of the past then any of the rest of us. His work and his whole persona is built upon loving himself.
"Calling yourself bullshit" - big deal - we all do it...
@touchogrey i think he was talking about where he comes from i.e. where he lived growing up. He grew up in west vancouver b.c. A place where there isn't much history(comparitively). I think you misread his turn of phrase. As for him loving himself, i think we all struggle with that, especially when one is an artist who people deem prophetic. He has talked about the trappings of celebrity in other interviews. I don't know the guy personally......have you read any of his stuff?
I first heard about Douglas Coupland from George himself in 2004. I met him quickly at a conference and we were talking about Ben from Billy Talent and George mentioned that Douglas was Ben's favorite author. I only recently picked up The Gum Thief and now I see why Ben likes him so much.
I recall not really liking the people in Generation X. Not to say the novel itself was bad, but the 20-nothings in the novel were pathetic, by and large - college educated, working at fast food restaurants, living in their parents basements? F-them! NO ONE to blame for their lazy malaise but themselves. Coupland lucked out to capture that then-undefined demographic...first, and he did it well, but I certainly loathed my own generation in their 20s.
@mpm2010lbc : by "we" you mean...? Generation X? Doug Coupland who BARELY qualifies as a member of Gen X? I are one, born in '72, myself. And I know beyond a doubt that when I was 30, having been self sufficient for nearly a decade by then, that someone living with mommy and daddy and college educated and working at Mickey D's was not only pathetic...they were probably also mentally ill.
Mmmmaybe I'm jealous I had no one to support me at 30. But otherwise, no jealousy whatsoever.
I just finished Generation X, I apologise for sharing this thought on this forum; but I thought there was just a sense of desperation to the writing; just a desperate string of broken verse, reaching verse.
I'm sorry... I like him, but JPod is just Mircoserfs(loved it) re-done and not well. Geeky guy-gets geeky girl(who happens to be cute/cool)-has weird geeky friends dot dot dot...
I've read some of his work and think he is a really great author. Such a huge Canadian talent. Only started reading JPOD and I watched the first episode that aired on TV. tonight.

Man, is he starting to look a little like Philip K Dick? That's a good look, though...

Not what I expected. Great author, but a little awkward in real life... I guess that's common with artists though.

His 'blue period' during Girlfriend in a Coma makes sooo much sense now! That book is definitely a downer.
