I am from the state (Iowa) that these guys are from and I am proud that we have an Memorial for them! I had a Grandfather who severed in WWII. All the Iowan's here are proud of our friends and family that sever the Military. May all the Military friends and families have their love ones come home safely.

I want to thank the dude who posted this song. Not much for this kind of music (I listen to hxc), but love this tune, to the haters: I am a fucking Marine Corps Vet., these men gave their lives for their country. Have a little God damned respect. Right or wrong, they manned up and did what they had to. Unfortunately, it cost them their lives. Their mother lost five children. I don't know if anyone else who has commented has children (I'd assume so), but losing any is unimaginable.

This song almost made me cry the first time I heard it. Not only is it sad, but it's a true story. Anyone who thinks this song is bad should think about how it felt to be in Mrs. Sullivan's place: 'I heard she cracked up when she found what the war had cost, all five, five, five of her sons were lost'.

In the wake of memorial day i think we all need to realize how our military protects us. at the same time we need to not hate out enemies or PAST enemies that are now allied with us. Let's all thank our troops for what they have done for us.

This is a great song and really "brings it home" to a younger generation and speaks much louder than if they read it in a history book or in class. I know it did when I first heard it. Good job Caroline Spine!

great song, excellent cause to write it. Mrs Sullivan... There's no way to bring the poor woman's life back. She lost what she had, there's no God or Spirit to help one through that. I hope she was around to hear this song, as it's possibly the only peace she may ever get from the situation.

Yes its harder to be the love one or next of kin when your family deploys and that's what they are trying to get across, I am a Marine, its not hard when you get Deployed but my Sister is Now in the Army and preparing for her first deploy men and i Admit I worry like hell about her

This song captured my imagination when it came out. I've always been interested in WWII, and to hear a rock band, in the 90's playing a song dealing with a tragedy that happened during that war was really something I grabbed onto.
There was a congressional act that passed, called the Sullivan Act that decreed that no siblings could ever again be assigned to the same military unit. Yes, they died, but not in vain.

@timbali01 Thats not true. Read here history.navy.mil/faqs/faq72-5.htm But it did infact get the Sole survivor policy. Still very tragic and some good came from their loss.

Saving private Ryan came into being becausee the U.S. War Department put into effect a new law forbidding brothjers from serving together after the tradgey of the five brothers. This whole family was wiped out in a single flash. Even though families continue to loose members during the same war the war department has tried to prevent this kind of thing happening again. They no longer even deploy brothers on the same ships or planes,

@jayekennedyland Siblings can join under their own free will and be in the military at the same time. The Sullivan act states that siblings cannot be 'drafted' at the same time. Just thought I'd clear that up.

@jayekennedyland noooooooooooooo. brothers can join the same dpt. as well as serve together. it is a rare case that they end up on the same ship. as in pvt ryan some are on normandy, but one parachuted. base point is that they make the last bro come home if hes the last one. but nevertheless that would fucking suck ass if all your sons died.
