I remember the nerd rage when this movie came out. I got caught up in it too... "Those graphics could never fit on a 1.44MB floppy!! That's not what a red box sounds like!!"
Looking back, we should have been cheering. Even with all its over the top silliness and technical flaws, this movie is a triumph and belongs in the pantheon of hacking movies right next to WarGames and Sneakers.
I can't believe you said something as ignorant as that.
Your profile says you're 25, but i'll be damned if you didn't sound like a snotty 12 year old to me. (no offense i assure you).
If you really believe you need a mouse to navigate any OS and the vast majority of all software, then you are nowhere near to being knowledgeable about Comp Sci to speak about it.
No, the mouse is not for dummies, its merely a tool that allowed the less tech savvy to interact with the OS and software in an logical and simplified manner.
Useful?
Nowadays, sure. It's all very much laid back now, unlike it was some 15 years ago, and even then it was already the norm for almost a decade.
The late 80s was when the mouse became a standart, but a small handful kept going low tech til the late 90s.
In the Hollywood realm, nothing screams HACKER any louder than having the character having an old fashion demeanor while making use of whatever modern technology will allow him to do.
It's an incongruence, but once you start adding up, it'll make sense (in Hollywood terms).
In the 80s and 90s, going high tech was the norm, but today we haven't a whole lot to move up, so we either go low tech, or plain silly (Matrix / Minority Report)

@00Resev so, since the "no mouse" philosophy occur even in, say Die Hard (4), which is modern, does it mean what I fear?

@Procredonioliostarca
The age of the movie doesn't matter.
