o couled not stand ice mans family to me they were the worst element of this movie they were just plot points now to be fair if they wouled have brought them back some how in the 3 one with some grouth it might have worked better
I'm sure you may have gotten this already from someone else, but Magneto moving the panels was necessary. Stryker made Cerebro to only find and target Mutants. Magneto was moving the panels so that the machine could find and destroy humans.
the thing with iceman and his family i dont think the goal was fear in humans but more personal like a jealousy within the little brother, in all realisticness i'll be jealous of my brother too if he could do things like freeze tea!
@ScoTTishN1NJA I always wait at least 2 years after a superhero film comes out before I review it-- I try to critically analyze them after they've been in the public conscoiusness a long time.
I could go even further, but I think 2 posts with what I've already mentioned gets the point across. But if you watch the ending of "khan", then "X2" you'll see all the similarities.
Prof. X's speech in his office is akin to Kirks speech at Spocks funeral, and the return to the lake seeing the phoenix under the water while jean recites the opening to the first film is akin to showing the Genisis planet, spocks coffin while spock recites the opening line of the television series.
Knowing Brian singer is a huge Trekkie, add 2+2 and you'll find Wrath of Khan all over the ending of X2. Jean holding back the water while also using her power to repair the X-jet is akin to Spock repairing the Enterprise and his sacrifice.
I disagree about iceman's family, people are that ignorant. If a kid comes out as being gay to their parents, it's pretty common for the parents to respond with something along like "are you sure?", it's no different here. Likewise with the racial prejudice that x-men also represents, many daughters have been disowned by their fathers because they want to marry a black man.
In the x-men comics, mutants are discriminated against as much as gays and blacks if not worse, the scene was realistic.
Jean knew she was going to become the Phoenix soon enough, hence the hints around the film (the museum scene with her and Scott for example) so if she didn't sacrifice her life she would have become the Phoenix.
I think the reason that Magneto moved the panels around was because they were set in "mutant mode". In the X-mansion, all the panels are there so you can find both humans and mutants. But some panels were missing in the dam, so they had to be rearranged to find humans.
I'm sorry but I feel this movie was extremely overrated. Half the mutants in the flim didn't get any good scenes to showcase their powers (Iceman, Rogue, Cyclops), Nightcrawler didn't really do much after his first scence. Woverine was protrayed as a pansy (i mean getting knocked out for several minutes after getting shot). I'm not saying this movie was bad... story was pretty good, and character development was handled nicely, but I still fail to see how this movie was among the best.
i agree with all of this except for the bit about nightcrawler i dont think the way he looked or acted was close enough to the comics and the actor didnt fit in my opinion he is the worst part of the movie i mean the actor isnt bad he just doesnt fit plus i hate the fact that cyclops barely even has a role throughout the 3 films but great review as always
Haha good dig at Star Wars with the Anakin Skywalker bit. The scene with the parents is just Brian Singer trying to turn X-Men more into a metaphor for gay people in general.
I think the Iceman/parents scene is portrayed as if they had a gay son, especially with the line "have you tried not being a mutant." To me, this is Bryan Singer putting personal experience in the movie. This is his moral message. Parents ask that very question to gay people. Can't you not be gay? No mom, I was born this way. The brother is homophobic and feels betrayed by this, so he turns on him. This scenerio is very real for people who are different in general.
I don't know why so many people gave X-men Origins Wolverine such a hard time, to me it's the best of all the xmen films. Please can do a review for it? Because I wanna see and hear someone else's views on the film...
@Samuel24842 i know how you you feel. all the the x-men movies was great but i believe i a movie focusing on wolverine is awesome. they also added some twists to his origins that sometimes bashed but then again they can because its their movie.
I hated X men Origins Wolverine. They threw in characters from the comics that weren't in the movies and wasted them. For example, Gambit. There was no story, the visual effects, were weak, and the action was so cliched. In my opinion, X men Origins Wolverine is one of the worst comic book films of all time.
It wasnt a love triangle with wolverine, ice man, and rogue. Wolverine is like a father figure to rogue, and was sizing ice man up to see if he was good enogh for a girl like rogue
This movie is definitely my favorite of the series. You should give a read to the story it's based on: God Loves, Man Kills (THE BEST underrated story of the X-men).
One thing further to be nitpicked: Why does Storm have a Kenyan accent in the first movie, but her normal voice here?
I really got annoyed by the Jean Grey ending of this film. The Emma Frost explanation I hear that Singer was going for in X3: Last Stand might have explained it. A better explanation in this film would've been nice though... No one seemed to care that Jean was out of the ship. What happens when Famke Jansenn portrays her I guess.
I always thought that this movie was implying that the pannels in Cerebro help it lock onto certain frequencies. Since Stryker's whole plan was to wipe out all mutants, it would make sense why he designed his Cerebro to only lock onto them, and why Magneto would have to alter it in order for it to be capable of locking onto humans. It's not totally plausible, but what about mind reading machines is?
Wow that was a mouthful anyways, I really enjoyed this review and I agree that X3 just didn't live up to the first and second. I really wanted to see the phoenix aura/raptor form the comics or even the X2 film, but oh well. 8)
save the others while killing herself to stop phoenix before it became a problem. I think it might have been a prelude to the 3rd film. It was about a year ago now but I watched commentary (or read an interview) that she knew her powers were becoming to dangerous and they experimented with other ways for her 'suicide'. One that they explained was that she was going to forcefully make scott blast her to death which would have coused massive trauma for cyclops which is why they dropped it.
I agree with most of your points but there is one I slightly disagree with, the Jean death scene. In the first film when the device in lady liberty was destroyed jean looked down as if something was wrong (I think that shows the destruction of the mental barriers that Prof X put in her mind). In X2 there is that scene at the beginning where she can't control her power to read minds. I believe at the end she knew she couldn't control her power maybe she could sense the phoenix. So she tried to
One that comes to mind is that Charles doesn't and would never have seen Eric as a monster, they remained friends throughout the movie series, and respected each other.
The Ice Man vs. Mother "have you tried not being a mutant" was more of a reference to homosexuality, as in "have you tried not being gay". Its a good comment on this type of ignorance, but I don't think it was needed either.
did you know David Hayter said that the love triangle was Logan Jean Scott and Logan Rogue Bobby. so that was cool to bad x-3 dropped it for the out of left field Kitty Rogue Bobby crap. i think x-2 is my fav to i liked that even though Rogue is dateing Iceman you could tell shes really in love with Logan even if he dose not feel the same for her.
I absolutly love this review, but here's the explaination as to why Bobbies' parents act so stupid: Brian Singer was trying to link the mutant rights to gay rights, and the mom asking if Bobby had tried not being a mutant is a common argument that straights make and the whole scene is a boy comming out to his parents. The brother calling the cops is believable because sometimes newly outed people are beaten/killed right after. I think it was one of the best scenes. But u don't have to aggree.
I basically totally agree with you. Cyclops is my favorite character, and while he had some cool moments here (kicking all the guards' asses, and almost killing Jean, Magneto and Mystique) he was so underused. James Marsden was great, especially in the Jean death scene (he and Hugh own there).
Possibley my favorite superhero / comic book movie ever. Very fair review. Great job.
I hate Wolverine though- he is in my top 4 most hated Marvel characters. Reasons? He is a jerk and a killer and an adulterer and disrespects Cyclops in X-Men animated series. Deadpool sounds interesting, but I think might have too much gore. First Class might be like One Tree Hill with laser beams. Magneto might be the only one I might like.
Hate to break this to you, but it's sounding more and more like there won't be a Magneto film. And if there is, McKllelan has already said he's too old to play the role again, so he won't be in it.
@Geekvolution great review and the point about Iceman's parents reaction to him as a mutant abilities are very true. Most brothers will never call the cops. In fact they will be looking to make money out of his gifts- I nkwo I would lol
@MegaSpideyman Whoever they eventually pick for a Magneto flick it shouldn't be Ian Mckellen, he's a great actor but now looks too old and fragile for the role.
Thanks for finally putting this review up Captain. I have been eagerly anticipating it for a while and was glad to see a new Geeks Not Nerds or two last week. Please keep up the good work.
