@Swordsman808 He was also ranked #1 for 2+months in 2000, as a 20 year old and was named that years player of the year. As an 18 year old qualifier, playing in his first ever GS event, Safin beat Agassi (a 3 time GS winner at the time) and Kuerten (the defending champion at the time) at RG. A point or two and he could have made it to the quarters that year and anything could have happened. He was injured in 2001, 2003, 2005 and parts of 07/08. He was never the same after the knee injury in 2005.
@Swordsman808 Saying that Safin is overrated is like saying Ivo Karlovic has the best backhand in tennis or that Elena Dementieva has the best serve in tennis. That's how ludicrous your comment and the reasoning behind your comment is. Safin made it to 4 slam finals, won 2 of them (beating the likes of Sampras, Federer, Hewitt, Martin, Blake, Grosjean, etc along the way in those 2 slams), and also beat Agassi, Roddick, Haas, to reach the other slam finals. He also won 5 MS events and 2 DCups.
@MrSkantron hes got the game but hes not aggressive enough against the top 3 guys. in the final against djoko aus open not once did he go down the line.... he had djoko on the ropes many times but never pulled the trigger and just went cross court all the time
the key in modern tennis backhand seems to be leading the swing with your left hand's elbow (the right hand is still) while on impact both hands are still (e.g Del Potro) on contrary to Danydenko's techique for example
Safin had the talent to win more granslams, but couldn't keep his head together, regardless he won two grand-slams and was world number, a dream come true for most.
@Anaconda43VR The guy is a moron. Anyone is a moron in my books who disregard injury. I've recovered from several injuries that have lasted well over 6 months each and I'm currently recovering for what will be going a 4 year shoulder injury in which I was operated on last year. It is not easy. Look at Kuerten, Norman, Philippoussis, Ivanisevic. Guys like Hewitt, Grosjean, Rafter... have all been screwed over by injury too. Tommy Haas has had to battle multiple surgeries. It isn't easy.
@Anaconda43VR Safin as an 18 year old would have beaten Murray on clay and if he was at his best possibly beaten him on hard. Murray would always be the underdog with his passive style, it feeds right into Marat's strengths and Murray would be in all sorts of trouble with Safin coming through to the net unlike so many of this generations players. Murray could win a slam at some point, I don't see any more than 4 other 'quality' contenders.
@Polarcupcheck It had little to do with that. By the time Federer was in his prime, Safin was 24. He had one year on tour after that before he got injured. It was nothing to do with Federer.
Murray has been pretty much injury free for the whole of his career thus far except a couple of months in 2007 and yet he's been unable to win one slam. He's nowhere near the player of Marat and will never be recognised by tennis experts as a player of Safins calibre.
@MaratSafinVideos look, Marat Safin might have better shots, but Murray def has a better mentality, so while one is strong at one point, the other has the other one, and still both can be great players. Tennis is not only hitting a ball.
Some of you seem to forget that Safin was injured every other year. In 2001 he had back problems in the first half of the season. He missed most of 2003 to a serious wrist injury, when he withdrew from the Aussie open (was supposed to play Schuettler, the finalist that year in the third round). Two months after he won the 05' Aussie, he got that knee injury, had the surgery that summer/fall and really was never the same. Safin certainly isn't Federer, but he is much more than Murray.
@Swordsman808 Yes.. but at least Safin has had a past of winning Grandslams whereas Murray has yet to win a set in his grandslam finals. Sooo, my point isn't that Safin is not overrated, but that Murray tops the overrated list by a wide margin.
@Swordsman808 Safin can't be "overrated" if you don't consider the most overrated... come on! Safin won two grandslams against two legends! And Federer was in his prime, on hardcourt!! Whereas... Murray lost in straight sets each time he tried so far. Plus, funny two time champion vs stinky breath cocky two time choker? Safin definitely cannot be overrated if Murray isn't at the top of your list for overrated players.
@Swordsman808 IMO Safin was one of the first players to display that extreme dominance on the court through power, which makes him so fun to watch, not to mention having one of the best backhands in history

@Anaconda43VR Murray can't even beat a severely post prime Federer, he'd have been absolutely ransacked.
