Cannot compare Springsteen version to JR Cash's reading - they both have different arrangements. I am a fan of The Boss, but this reading has the same impact as JR's reading of Hurt - as good as it gets. What can be said is that if Cash covers a song most of the time it was well written with a story to tell, and when Johnny Cash gets it on the tape the song usually breathes and finds a new life and its final resting place. JR left us so much . . . R.I.P.
Great version. I guess it's natural to argue one version is better than the other, but really they're both freakin' spectacular. I'm glad someone pulled this song out of the cosmos and shared it with us, not once, but twice.
Everyone can piss and moan about who's better but every artist that Johnny did his own rendition of their song took it as the highest honor they could receive because he was the man is the man and will always be the man learn it and love it
Bruce's original rendition is very stark, haunting and downright disturbing whereas Cash's cover as well performed as it may be just sounds way too polished. The song simply loses a lot of what made it initially great.Just my two cents.I realize that this rendition might be more listenable and commercial but it certainly doesn't make it better.Nebraska is one of the best albums ever and you all owe it to yourselves to check it out.Go and buy it.It's cheap
This Icon just kept getting better & better, His best album ever was his last one he made, & to think of the CRAP they now get away with calling "Country music" ...
Since artists (and Poets) like Johnny Cash are gone so far away from this cruel, ruthless world, life's colors lost their beautiful magic essence. Thank you Johnny, for this works of Art.
Johnny owned this song the moment he recorded it - he had lived and brought things out in it Bruce was only imagining. The album cover picture above says everything; sometimes the singer is even greater than the song.
@hesterbbh what has that got to do with my comment? i didn't say "nobody writes a song like johnny cash" did I.I said "nobody tells a story like johnny cash" you do realise this is johnny cash singing yes?
Nothing feels better than blood on blood.
Thank God for my GOOD brother and my best friend.

@vladamih ...A fart from Johnny Cash is one million times better than anything from that socialist Springsteen

One of Bruce's best...but then, Johnny did a LOT of covers over the years. He put a mournful, soulful sound to it.
Johnny was half actor, half singer...when he sang about emotion, you FELT the emotion.

Wow Johnny's version is so much better for me, his tempo is far better than Bruce's.

I like Springsteen sometimes, but he's a poopdick singer. Johnny Cash had the god-given voice.
