Anyone who is interested in this topic will enjoy reading Joel Salatin's 'Everything I Want to Do Is Illegal'. He shares the issues, regulatory roadblocks, harrassment by beaurocratic officials, and other impediments to small and family farms gaining access to the marketplace. The laws preventing people from buying whatever food they want from whomever they want would stagger the nation's Founders.
"We need a food policy czar in the White House," he says. How utterly absurd. In other words, he advocates the matriarchy of the Nanny State. Welcome to the Brave New World, friends. Google for my related page on amazon with these words:
Resist the Brave New World
Incidentally, it's no accident - since he supports the advent of the Nanny State - that in In Defense of Food he gives no credit to fathers for their role in food tradition. He gives all the credit to mothers. Such is Oprahism.
Wow,I've driven on that same highway that he refers to numerous times. The stench is near Harris Ranch. But Harris Ranch has a good reputation,so I'd be curious to know if that's the "feedlot" he's talking about.
The workers who can eat all that cane can do so because the sugar isn't refined. There are other vitamins and minerals in it still that help it to be utilized by the body. It's not just because they are burning it off.
I can't even see what he said, but most seem to be morons. The best thing they can do for the planet at this point is lay down and die. And they say PBS has a "liberal bias" If that's the case then sign me up!!!!!! Only PBS seems concerned with public health and the environment.

I love how he talks about the decentralization. Centralization is the major problem not only with the food supply, but also the US government.

@lucasboden - Centralization seems like a good idea, to some, but as you point out, it's a problem.

Moyers made some very tough questions, and Pollan took them well. I'm convinced to change the world. Thank you Professor Pollan.
