@brennoburn If Ringo is not the best drummer in The Beatles then why did they make him their drummer in the first place?? And did you even listen to Ringo's best drumming in The Beatles?? Probably not. The other Beatles, even Paul just can't compete with Ringo's drumming skills. They even wrote to him that he was the best just to get him back when he quit. All The Beatles think he was great. They could have gotten any drummer from Liverpool to begin with but they chose Ringo.
@Ishi680 I guess you didn't read correctly but I said that ACCORDING TO JOHN LENNON, Ringo wasn't the best even in The Beatles. I know that in the beginning the drummer was Pete Best but this one was not very good and then they invited Ringo that was the drummer of Rory Storm & the Hurricanes
My favorite band is U2 and my second favorite are The Beatles but Neal Peart is better than Ringo and than Larry Mullen Jr. By the way, Neal is a great The Who's fan
@brennoburn I agree that Neil Peart is the best drum soloist and best drummer in terms of technical skills that I've seen and he is aggressive and experimental and but that's not the kind of style that would fit The Beatles' music.
@Ishi680 Of course that his style wouldn't fit The Beatles' music, I agree with you in this point. Rush is a progressive rock band and the sound is much more harder and faster than the Beatles' sound. I don't dislike Ringo, but in my opinion he is not the best one. Bono for example is my favorite songwriter but I have to admit that Bob Dylan is problably better than him.
Thanks for the conversation Ishi, Rock and Roll rules
@brennoburn He is not the best and Keith Moon is not the best either but they were just perfect for the bands they were in. Keith has awesome thunderous performance in "My Generation" by The Who and Ringo was a drumming artist in "A Day in The Life" by The Beatles. And yes, rock and roll rules. I really wish rock would be revived on this generation.
The "skill" is not always measured by doing it too fast or too loud and doing solos. So unless people analyze which is fit, which is perfect for a specific style, I wouldn't immediately say one is better. Ringo is my favorite drummer but they were both perfect for the bands they were in.
Keith was a little bit of an overrated drummer in my view. He would make the stage explode when he drums and toilets when he has the explosives. He was a flashy drummer that no one can imitate his moves, his drinking and facial expressions on stage. But look at Ringo, he drums in a style where he doesn't always respond with aggression. He was excellent but underrated. I feel that neither of them are the best drummer but I wouldn't say Keith was always better on all things drum.
@MissEgasMoniz Seems Ringo has got something important going for him--he's still breathing and living large. Moon was a great drummer, but dysfunctional human being--dead by deliberate overdose at 32. Pete Townshend says as much at the end of an interview--just search 'Moon the loon'. I think you under rate Ringo as musician as well.
@MissEgasMoniz Ringo was almost as crazy as Keith... maybe not but he did do a lot of stupid things with Keith. Keith Moon is the best drummer ever, Ringo may not be the best but he's one of my fav's
@Ishi680 Whats up spud? I know more about music than the average person. I can do better on the drums than Ringo - most decent drummers can, but Moon....ahahaha....no way....he was in a different league
@MissEgasMoniz You are clearly not a Beatles fan. The way you acted towards Ringo now is just why I called him underrated. Just listen to Keith Moon's drumming, he was on a number of occasions, out of rhythm.Listen to Ringo in "A Day in The Life, Rain, I'm Gonna sit right down and cry over you, Good Morning Good Morning", Yer Blues, Oh Darling, Come Together. He is unique. Moon is good but compare his drumming to Bonham and Peart, those are the real pros. Moon's solos were random beats.
@MissEgasMoniz no. you may be able to play better than ringo on the beatles recordings, but did you or "most decent drummers" have a drum battle with ringo? no.
"Ringo" fans.... I hope U will check out the video for my song " RINGO ". It's a very retro video with Beatleish touches. It was done as a labor of love and with the utmost respect for the Fabs. The song and video is my attempt at putting a little bit of the Beatle spirit out there for Beatle fans. It's also my tribute to George Harrison's slide playing as well as Ringo's unique style.
Ringo is the most underrated drummer in rock history. His drumming is incredible in songs like A Day In The Life, Strawberry Fields Forever, I Want You, She Said She Said, Tommorow Never Knows, Something, Here Comes The Sun, Taxman, Paperback Writer, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Abbey Road medley, etc.

Keith Moon before ingesting horse tranqs : "Of course I can take them! I'm Keith fucking Moon!"
@VoxMax1200 He never went out of rythm, at least not on studio recordings. However, he did change beats and grooves according to the fill he played, and Keith Moon virtually played continuous fills which fitted the song as a whole, which he's famous for doing. He almost never kept a straight groove, but that doesn't mean he never kept a straight rythm. In the later years of his life, drugs took the better of his drumming though..
both funny and great though, ringo's simplicity suited the beatles style and he actually drums really well on some tracks. check out rain, the end and obviously the fills on a day in the life. and moonie was the most innovative drummers ever, even guys like bonham, peart and portnoy have citied him as an influence. definately one of the greatest muscians who has ever lived
@bigdaveupload1980 Ringo had to keep it simple because it wouldn't fit the easy listening sound of The Beatles. Imagine Keith Moon drumming with The Beatles. Haha.
What a ridiculous debate. Of course Moon was a better drummer. I'm sure Ringo wouldn't argue the fact just as I'm sure he wouldn't bother to get into a competition about such a stupid matter. Ringo fell into the Beatles quite serendipitously and he did what any smart guy would do -- he rode the gravy train, contributed where he could, and had a hell of a good time doing it. Who cares who's "better?"
gotta love Moonie. he didnt drink himself to death, know the facts before talking smack If you actually knew what you were talking about you would know that he was trying to quit drinking and the pills he was taking for it killed him because he took too many It takes a lot of strength for someone whos been drinking for about 25 years to stop, and its a shame that him wanting to become a clean person cost him his life. Being an alcoholic doesnt make you any less of a drummer.
I don't like the discussion about "who is best??" because is not a competition. Both drummers was friends and both have difficult skills. The people criticizes Ringo's work without listening his best tracks. But when a drummer want to copy his work... is not as easy as you tell.
If you like Moon, perfect, if you like ringo, perfect, y you like both, perfect to, but who are you to decide the one who is the best?
Ringo sucked. He was put into the Beatles because he's Jewish. Period. Moon was overrated as a drummer because young boys confuse their infatuation with his wild personality with talent. Had he lived, he would have been fired by The Who. He was an obnoxious, pathetic drug addict and drunk who lost most of his talent by the time he was 30. It took him twenty and thirty takes to lay down tracks on Who Are You. Townshend was tired of him. Live with it. It's the truth.
I swear to God I'm not. Both are true. Regarding Moon, we are shown cool clips of him making neat faces. He was physically charismatic. Many of the clips were of the band miming videos. We don't see him fucking up repeatedly in the studio, passing out on stage, puking on himself, and otherwise carrying on like a complete asshole. There was nothing cool about him. I resent the false imagery.
i mean, i love moon's drumming, but i must agree. if it wasn't for his poor drinking habits he would be my favorite drummer. but i can't respect someone who drinks themselves to death. sorry.
its what made him so good, was the way his was. Simply put his destructive, excessive nature, and sense of humour is what made him the best drummer ever! Theres no doubt tho it is a terrible waste of a life.
oh, come on, everyone loves ringo but keith's drumming skills were so unbelievable/awesome that they aren't even comparable. ringo played pop drums. keith invented rock drumming. it's just different.
Ringo Starr was a damn good drummmer and very important for the success of BEAT Music. His way to play the beat was special. His fills and breaks are not easy to play for example in Come togehter
he wasnt the BEST drummer ever but he was very talented. think the beatles one of the greatest bands of all time all the musicians in the group have to be very talented to have been so great
You say, "No, Ringo wasn't an amazing drummer, but he was right for the Beatles."
Well, what exactly mattered? If he had been what you call an 'amazing drummer' would that have benefited anyone else's music? Of course not. Then you admit that he was 'right for the Beatles', and I can only say that this was the only thing that mattered, that all of the recordings in which he was in he was 'the right' drummer.
in my opinion... ringo was the right guy for the beatles. He was a person in first, so i think it was the right guy for lennon and mccartney. The rest... is magic!! He has his style!! Phil Collins said about "you know what I like" of genesis: I played drums in ringo style: that's why the song was famous!! a great tribute from a great drummer you know! eheheh!!!
By contrast, The Who were the best live act in the world, largely because they never attempted to recreate the studio sound. They were talented enough to take the music to a different level live.
As Lennon allegedly said of Ringo, "Best drummer in England? He's not even best drummer in the Beatles!"
Why would anyone think Ringo was a fantastic drummer? You'd never say Lennon or Harrison were the best guitarists in the world. Why do you think they gave up touring in 66? They could never reproduce the studio work in a live setting once they'd got past I Saw Her Standing There.
ah the best drummers. Ringo wasn't quite as "talented", but he had a very unique style. He also reminds me of Moon, they both were "fun" and had great personalities.
Ringo didn't do what Moon did, partly b/c of lack of ability and b/c there wasn't any need to on the Beatles. And let's not forget, John and Paul pretty much dictated everything, so there wasn't room for creativity. Keith Moon was great, and yeah, better than Ringo.
But that doesn't mean Ringo was/is bad, but different. If you think Ringo didn't leave a stamp on the drumming legacy, you're fooling yourself. Look at it this way, if Paul and John thought Ringo sucked, they'd have replaced him.
Moon was the best drummer who ever lived, now ringo, wasnt... Although in his defense, The Beatles were a pop band officially so pop doesnt have much drumming in them. I love the beatles and i dont hate Ringo dont get me wrong at all but i think there is no comparison. Keith > Ringo
ringo 's son zack starkey is keith moon's godson and keith teaught zack how to play the drums my god i seen zack withthe who when they did the quadophina tour in ohio zack played just like keith
Both of them were BRILLIANT!!!! I will always love both of them equally...period! FTW!!!

he wasnt the BEST drummer ever but he was very talented. think the beatles one of the greatest bands of all time all the musicians in the group have to be very talented to have been so great
SergeantPepper8 3 years ago 4
You say, "No, Ringo wasn't an amazing drummer, but he was right for the Beatles."
Well, what exactly mattered? If he had been what you call an 'amazing drummer' would that have benefited anyone else's music? Of course not. Then you admit that he was 'right for the Beatles', and I can only say that this was the only thing that mattered, that all of the recordings in which he was in he was 'the right' drummer.
Ta Da.

Interviewer: "Is Ringo the best drummer in the world?" John Lennon: "He's not even the best drummer in the Beatles."

And you bealive that the others three have more skills in drumming?
are you thinking about how many times the beatles answer questions like joke?
and who cares if he is "the best of the world". The best of the world does not exist in the arts, only in the sports.
And drumming is not sport!!!

Biggest urban myth going mate. Lennon never said it.

its true Ringo is not a great drummer, just an average, nothing special
fukinguitar 3 years ago
... you know, I think they're both fantastic and you can think what you want but it's all a matter of opinion.
Maddiecake 3 years ago
in my opinion... ringo was the right guy for the beatles.

21Cdaftworks 3 years ago
As Lennon allegedly said of Ringo, "Best drummer in England? He's not even best drummer in the Beatles!"
Why would anyone think Ringo was a fantastic drummer? You'd never say Lennon or Harrison were the best guitarists in the world. Why do you think they gave up touring in 66? They could never reproduce the studio work in a live setting once they'd got past I Saw Her Standing There.
21Cdaftworks 3 years ago
they quite touring in 66 becuz they couldnt be heard on stage the crowd screamed so loud..
not becuz of ringo.. lol
Lildrummerboy50 3 years ago
ah the best drummers. Ringo wasn't quite as "talented", but he had a very unique style. He also reminds me of Moon, they both were "fun" and had great personalities.
RockRevivalist 3 years ago
And lest anyone forget, Keith Moon cites Ringo as his favorite drummer.
jake1823 3 years ago 12
Ringo didn't do what Moon did, partly b/c of lack of ability and b/c there wasn't any need to on the Beatles. And let's not forget, John and Paul pretty much dictated everything, so there wasn't room for creativity. Keith Moon was great, and yeah, better than Ringo.
But that doesn't mean Ringo was/is bad, but different. If you think Ringo didn't leave a stamp on the drumming legacy, you're fooling yourself. Look at it this way, if Paul and John thought Ringo sucked, they'd have replaced him.
jake1823 3 years ago 11
that's cocaine for you
bobmorrice 3 years ago
Moon was the best drummer who ever lived, now ringo, wasnt... Although in his defense, The Beatles were a pop band officially so pop doesnt have much drumming in them. I love the beatles and i dont hate Ringo dont get me wrong at all but i think there is no comparison. Keith > Ringo
PBhockeydude 3 years ago
Moon and Peart were the reason i drum. They would be a better comparison.
